QuagganBacon it comes down to western society feeling they are owed an explanation because of your presence. I am stopped constantly and asked why I'm in a wheelchair. People feel they have a right to know when they absolutely don't. In order to not have regular, unpleasant encounters, i explain why- but it has an impact on my self identity and my perception of the world because people do it, and it's not positive for either.
@KKREATIONS20137 жыл бұрын
QuagganBacon it really is I get questions all the time mostly from little kids but then there are some rude people but I just brush them off
@Avarioth6 жыл бұрын
Emily C - I 100% agree with the part about PEOPLE for some reason feeling as though they're owed an explanation, simply by virtue of being curious to know the answer. It's extremely selfish and inconsiderate to put complete strangers on the spot and in a situation where they have to either give them personal details about themselves, that there's no bloody reason for them to know, lie about it/make up a story or risk appearing rude to those around and just ignore or reject them. It's ridiculous. What I disagree with is it being a western society thing... Humans are curious by nature and it's a really powerful thing too. It's driven the greatest discoveries and accomplishments of human history as well as some of the most horrific acts of torture in the name of scientific curiosity. Try going anywhere else in the world, Middle East, Africa, Asia and let me know if people there didn't as much as glance and no one asked you about it, lol. (Though I don't see why anyone would be curious about a stranger being in a wheelchair. Wheelchairs are probably the nr. 1 common thing in terms of physical disability, so it's not like it's a rare and astonishing sight.)

Michael Jackson paved the way for vitiligo to be understood more in the media. Nobody seemed to know the disease existed then and the media were horrific to him, saying he bleached his skin because he was ashamed of his race 💔 He was brave enough to talk about it live with Oprah on the most watched interview of her career. I'd be proud to be compared to him in any way

I admire MJ so much. I think everything happened to him for a reason - kind of like a messenger for other people to learn from.
@fe50186 жыл бұрын
Definitely the reason I knew what it was. Its tricky though; Jackson modified so many other of his features that it wasn't an unreasonable leap to think he deliberately altered his complexion too. It's like Ozzy Osbourne's Parkinsonian tremor; it's awful how people speak about and mock him because they think oh it's drug induced impairment so it's ok. Its not ok, its not related to substance abuse, but even so it's actually not an unreasonable leap of reasoning it *could* be from that, ya know?

People have loads of different things they think are attractive, including vitiligo. I find it attractive. I also find tattoos, freckles, and birthmarks attractive. Those are things I personally see and find visually appealing. It's subjective to everyone. I don't know why people are so obsessed with shutting people down that say they find it beautiful, as if someone with vitiligo's skin is objectively unattractive because it's "different", and saying it's beautiful is "for likes" or the "PC" thing to do. It's stupid. Should people with vitiligo not think their own skin is beautiful?? "There's always going to be someone in the world that doesn't think I'm beautiful. That's fine. I'm not here for everyone; I'm here for that one that thinks I'm fabulous, and that's myself."

One of my aunties has vitiligo. I never knew what it was called until well into adulthood. It was just that some parts of her skin were really white, and as I saw her each year at family reunions, it progressed and she had to start sitting in the shade more. Most people in my family (and I'm talking my gigantic extended family) have birthmarks, myself included. So as a kid, not knowing any better, I just figured it was another type of birthmark, only hers was white while mine was brown. I've had school friends and students with vitiligo, as well as some with port-wine stains. And then there's me and my brother, with an ever-growing number brown dots on our faces. In other words, I'm really surprised that people are confused by vitiligo. Even if they don't know exactly what it is, like how younger me didn't fully understand the concept, I don't know why people see it as anything other than a normal variation of skin pigmentation. People with vitiligo, port-wine stains, and other skin pigment differences have been part of my life since I was a child. I thought this stuff was so normal and average as to be unremarkable, like hair color variations. Does the average person really not know multiple people with skin pigment variety? Surely they have skin pigmentation differences on their own bodies, right? I thought skin pigmentation differences on a body was the *norm* and not the exception..?

I have vitiligo for ten years already. When I was young I don't have many frienIds. Many kids didn't want to talk with me because they thought I was contagious. They were insulting me. They were watching me and they were discussing me. They said many times that I am a cow. And yea.. Now I am 16 years old and learned to love my vitiligo. I met a person who really make me feel special. He tells me I am beautiful because what I am. And he loves that I am unique I am happy now. If I had vitiligo I wouldn't be offended or irked if someone said: "Oh, that's the same condition Michael Jackson had!". People are just trying to relate! Maybe if they had a family member who also has it, they'd say: "Oh, my sister has vitiligo too", but since they don't, MJ is a common denominator. It seems silly (and even a bit insensitive) to dismiss people's desire to break the ice or create a connection.

My only question about vitiligo is if it can also effect the color of your hair. It has to do with the melanin or something, right?
@zekko08067 жыл бұрын
Fizzy basically, my body is like “bruh ACK I dislike you skin color there.” So my pigments no longer exist there. Also, it can turn my hair white, ut it will take a while to turn it white since it takes a while for these spots to appear. So to sum it up, yes it can infect hair, and no it’s about losing pigments. Nice question though!
@ragnhildmd50637 жыл бұрын
Fizzy yes. It's because the cells that produce melanin in certain areas of your skin disappears. That's also who people with vitiligo can get patches of hair that's white. You can Google it for more information if you want to.

If you meet a person the first time, you cannot know the character behind it, so at least at the beginning, it's only the outside which counts. Of course, a good relationship needs more than that. Additionnaly, people which such diseases (hope this is the right word, because I'm not native English) are , in case they achieved to not become cynical, often really accepting and nice people because they''ve learned to love themselves and accept it when other people don't correpond to the norm. Hello Vitiligo friends! I also have this condition about 3 years ago, hands, elbows, mouth and eyes and I love to see how the stains on each one grow differently, I think they are part of our way of being, they are like our fingerprints, unique in each one... Personally, it sprouted me for suffering from hyperthyroidism, a thyroid disease, becomes hyperactive and gives very strong anxiety and nervousness attacks, etc. So vitiligo and hyperthyroidism can be linked. The man with the spotted arms and the streak on his forehead... That looks so cool. And I love cows, but I see why others may take offence.

I’ve always thought to myself that we need more people with this condition to be in more shows and movies, but for some reason we only stop at racial diversity as our only goal. There are kids out there who look different from the general public who could really use some good role models.

Cornelius M My T.V. and movie role models don't have Vitiligo, and they don't need to. Someone doesn't have to look exactly like you for you to identify with and relate to them.

Bladabladabloo Okay, sure, but it still would be cool to see an actor with vitiligo. I think the main issue is that none of them want to go down the acting career
@bladabladabloo6 жыл бұрын
Someone's Side Channel Sure it'd be cool. I'm just saying as someone with Vitiligo, that kids who have Vitiligo don't "need" a media role model who has it too. I've always wanted to get into acting, but I probably won't. Not because of my Vitiligo, but because I don't think I have enough skill to be an actor. My point is that nobody should look for someone with Vitiligo to put into a role. They should look for a good actor who is right for the role. And if that actor so happens to have Vitiligo, then that's fantastic.

I was running the register at my job when someone with vitiligo came through. I was already vaguely familiar with vitiligo, though I didn't remember the name, and I wanted to say, "your skin is beautiful." But I didn't want to make her self conscious or upset if she didn't appreciate attention brought to it, so I just stayed silent. I regret that now.

They look kinda cool in my opinion. Its kinda like war paint since it looks like it and shows thst you are fighting in a way or you are proud. (False info?)
