I remember a girl at school, she needed her insulin during the annual tests and the teacher (a teacher from another grade, that way the real one won’t help us cheat if that makes sense) said no, and that “it could secretly be drugs” next thing you know, an 11 year old little girl is in the hospital because her shitty substitute wouldn’t let her use insulin. What a day that was.

If I was the student I would have took the Insulin and whatever happend happend. You need it to live, which is more important at that moment then obeying the teacher. The teacher definitely was not critically assessing the situation, due to some precomposed beliefs or fleeting feelings at the time.

Mrb Drm Its more than just a needle lol... For insulin it depends if you use pens or a pump: for a pump you have to carry a minimum of extra insulin, reservoirs, cannulas, extra batteries, and alcohol pads. for pens you have to at least carry 2+ pens, backup needles, and alcohol pads. On top of that, you have to carry a glucometer and backup test strips, lancets, and alcohol wipes. Diabetes sucks lmao

Don't you worry about their uneducated opinions. I have diabetes type 1 since 1993 . My boyfriend and I are still together for 24 years & counting and have 4 beauitful kids without any fear of being around me as being a diabetic person. Now, he has diabetes type 2 few months ago..it has nothing do with how much sugars or carbs he ate or drank..he never been fat and still isn't fat or chubby. After all, it's in his family genes just like mines is as well. Wish you a good long life and stay heathly! ☺

Story time: Once we were doing a lesson and it mentioned type two diabetes. Almost everyone in the class looked at me. Straight away my teacher took notice and said. “Alexis does not have that type of diabetes. She has type one, this is type two.” I was so happy. another story: I was at tgi fridays (a restaurant.) and an older couple saw me with my insulin. They asked me if they wanted to do it in a corner near there table and I politely declined as I’m comfortable doing insulin in public. Last story: I was at tgi Fridays (different location) and was holding my insulin pen. A waitress who was ordering out deserts said. “I have type one diabetes as well.” And showed me a band on her wrist that said type one diabetic.

When I was in a psychiatric ward the medical doctor refused to let me take insulin for the food I ate! I explained to her the basics of diabetes(which she ought to know as she's a doctor???) Then she accused me of arguing with her and when I told her that I knew what I was supposed to do as I've been a diabetic for over 10 years she told me that I had been doing it wrong! For 10 years! One of my high school friends had type one and we would often be sat together during exams, because our last names were 2 letters and a pronunciation apart, and because she had a bad bladder as well every time an exam was about to start she'd often be in the bathroom, but she would leave her diabetes bag next to me because I was smart enough to tell the proctor that the person sitting beside me has Type 1 diabetes and under state law they can't take the bag away from her during the test. The amount of times I had to tell proctors that there is a law that makes taking an insulin bag away during tests illegal and then convince them is so fucking annoying. She also had a pump that stuck in her arm, and it used to be in her other arm, and there's this horrible scar there because in middle school before I knew her, one of her test Proctors tore the pump out because they thought it was a cheating device. Like, these people are so concerned about cheating that they forget that children do have medical issues and human rights.

School is one of the worst places to have type 1 diabetes. I was diagnosed in 6th grade, I was 12, and I was having a hard time dealing with it. I had great blood sugars, but at first I couldn't even test my own blood sugar so I was completely dependent on the adults around me. My parents were great, but the school nurse (who is literally being paid to do this) had such a weird attitude about it. She always tried to rush me in and out (side note, the school had like 150 students and I was typically the only one in the office. There wasn't a line out the door) so she'd set up my meter and syringe before I got there. Apparently her arthritis made it hard to get the lancets back out, so instead of just having me set up my meter she wouldn't put the lancet in all the way.... it's designed to make you bleed and retract very quickly so it doss minumal damage.... unless you don't push it in. Then it doesn't retract and you have to take it out of your finger, causing way more damage than it's supposed to. That one was fairly easy to fix. I just asked her why she did it that way and then with a little pressure she let me set it up myself again. After about 2 months I could test my blood sugar indepently and it wasn't as big a deal, but I still couldn't inject myself. I could draw my insulin but I'd always just end up sitting there after wiping a site off. I just had this mental block around doing something to my body that would harm it... and I was 12 and dealing with something no one else in my family had so it wasn't expected. About 6 months after I was diagnosed I went to her office before lunch and she told me she wasn't going to give me injections anymore and that I had to do it. A school nurse does NOT have the right to do this to you! But I didnt know that. She wiped down my arm and pinched it for me but made me give the injection... in my arm (would recomend thigh or stomach as a good first injection site because you don't have to strain to reach it). After, I went to the cafeteria bathroom because I was crying and a lunch lady/ nun came and shouted at me to stop crying without even asking what was wrong (don't send your kids to Catholic school! Espically if they have diabetes. Public school is much safer because they're legaly required to always have a nurse in the building). After the fact, my doctors wrote multiple strongly worded letters informing the school nurse that she couldn't do that to diabetic childrenn but it had already happened. It then literally took me 2 whole years to be able to inject insulin by myself. If she had just followed the laws and done her job instead of traumatizing a kid who was dealing with a whole new way of life I don't doubt I would have been able to work through it quickly like i did finger sticks, just at my pace. Her impatience with me, whom treating was her job, made me even more grateful for my wonderful parents though! They didn't sign up for this mess, but they've always supported me when I've needed it and now they're barely involved in my treatment at all. Sometimes you just have to be willing to give people the time they need.

I remember when I was 7 there was a girl in my after school program that was diabetic and was eating a candy (or maybe she was drinking a juice or something, I can’t remember) because her blood sugar was low. A boy asked her why she was allowed to eat candy and she answered that she had diabetes so she needed to have sugar. The boy then said that he wished he had diabetes (obviously not understanding that you don’t really want diabetes, he just meant that he also wanted candy) and I remember the teacher/after school program worker getting suuuuuuper mad at him. She basically cornered him and yelled at him that he should never say that and that he absolutely doesn’t want diabetes. I just remember being terrified and him in hysterical in tears saying that he understood and then apologizing. The girl that had diabetes wasn’t mad or offended, she understood why he had said what he said and she wasn’t mad at all because let’s be honest, if a kid gets a piece of candy and has a valid reason why of course other kids will want it too. To this day I still think that the teacher reacted a little too harshly considering that he was just a 7 or 8 year old child.

My brother, Daniel, has Type 1. My dad, my brother and I went on a trip to my dad's friends cottage. While we were in the car, my bro had a low blood sugar so he had to eat something. That's when my dad's friend Alan found out my brother had diabetes. So he asked the usual questions ("what are those needles for" "should you be eating that" "but you're so skinny"...etc.) and Daniel politely explained them. The questions went on and I could see he was visibly tired of answering them so he just went to sleep lol. When we stopped at a restaurant, Alan starting repeating some statements. "Wow that's a hefty steak. Are you sure you're allowed to have it?" We told him the answer in the car. "So like do you have to lose weight?" he was repeating questions over and over again. He even said "Isn't the government trying to take our money though needles?" Daniel was visibly annoyed. So I tried to change the subject but it wouldn't work. At the end of all this, Alan simply says "I still don't feel like it's a real disease." ????????? Anyway, the point of this long story is that people with chronic illnesses are not walking, talking factbooks that you can just nag and nag. Of course, questions are great but you should know when to stop. Great vid, bbc.

I completely understand what you're talking about. I had my pump site on my arm one day at work and the uniforms are short sleeved, so one of my coworkers thought itd be a great time to start asking me all the usual questions while I was trying to seat some customers. Someone literally had to tell her to give me a minute to do my job. It's so annoying that on top of how constant the literal disease is, people always want all of your time to correct their misinformation. And the part about the guy not believing it's even real??? Now after a very long time I understood why the school would give us a medical form to fill *every* year. I used to get annoyed but only when I reached a certain age did I understand that there are chronic illnesses such as diabetes type 1 or epilepsy or asthma. Recently they also started asking about mental health as well which I appreciate since some people have cases such as borderline disorder, bipolar disorder, depression, OCD or autism (now am not saying autism is a mental illness its more of a disability however most of the people I meet who have autism suffer from mental illness such as anxiety or have anxiety attacks)

Only once have I been offended regarding my diabetes. When I was at some sort of camp other teenagers asked me to not inject Insulin during meals, but to go outside instead. (Yes, they grouped up for that) One of them was "sensitive" (afraid of needles or sth). I told them I would do it under the table and make sure they didn't have to see it. Later I overheard one of them say, that going outside would not be such a bother and that they didn't understand why I did not comply.

Type II is not always lifestyle. Period. There is a large genetic component as well as things like PCOS (poly cystic ovarian syndrome) and other reasons why the body loses its sensitivity to the hormones. My body produces WAY more than it should (which meant I used to have chronically low blood sugar and was having to monitor to keep my sugars up enough that I wasn't in real danger. Now... my body has lost sensitivity to it (which my doctors told me would happen eventually) and now I'm on medication to make my body sensitive again. There is a HELL of a lot more to it than just lifestyle choices, but as always, people just LOVE to point the finger of blame at someone whos sick and blame them for being sick.

I once used to think that if I had diabetes I'd just die because I wouldn't be able to inject myself. But I have a deadly allergy to tree nuts, and the day came when I had to use my epi-pen. And it turned out I can inject myself just fine if my other option is death. You never know what it's going to be like unless you're actually in that position. And I know it's not exactly the same thing as injecting insulin, but it's similar enough that it changed my perspective.

I’ve been waiting for you guys to make this video for so long! One other thing that I think is totally not understood about diabetes is that it’s not just what you eat that controls your blood glucose. If you are stressed, workout, angry, have a lot of adrenaline, etc all of that can affect your blood glucose. Even if you eat the same thing for every meal and know exactly the macros for the meal and dose appropriately, there’s still a ton of other factors that can make your numbers too high or too low.

When i was in 4th grade, a kid brought in some rocket candies. I asked if i could have some, and he said no because he needed them to keep his blood sugar low because he is diabetic. My 8 year old sister has type one diabetes and she was diagnosed when she was around 5 and our school was great and funded for us to hold a run where a bunch of people would run around the school a bunch and how ever many times would raise an amount of money to donate to finding a cure and helping support other people and we got a page in our yearbook and it was great :) I loved that school and she's an absolute brave kid and im so proud of her. I love this video. I'm type 1 on the insulin pump and sensor. I was diagnosed at age 15 the summer before my freshman year of high school . I was in gym class and my gym teacher was a dummy. I did not know exactly what a low was yet. I started feel extremely dizzy and felt like I would passed out it was the worst feeling. I asked the gym teacher if I could go to the nurse she said no you have to run another mile I said I feel horrible. I work with teens on a residential unit and we've had a couple type 1 diabetic kids stay. They made me nervous when they refused to eat when their blood sugar was low. I think when you have diabetes you need to talk to people and give them information about diabetes because if something happens and the blood sugar gets too low and you don't respond, people need to know what to do, so I think sometimes these questions are necessary.

I had a pump where your have a dermal implant to read your blood and then it tells the pump to pump insulin but it was way to expensive so I ditched it

My pump and blood sugar transmitter is being payed by the health system (Germany). But it can only warn against bad sugar, not give insulin on its own.

It’s a prototype the nhs were trialing it’s didn’t have an official name we just called it x12 but the implant was £50 a month or whenever it needed replacing because it got caught on clothing and ripped out easily and the insulin cost another 70 per month but it may be cheaper when it’s mass produced

chicken stripper 50 a month is cheap. the tube from the pump to the body alone is 15€ a piece and replaced every 3 days. Good thing the Krankenkasse pays.

TheSassi42 what I mean is it was expensive for me because I kept ripping it out on a weekly basis sometimes multiple times a week and it got to the point where I ripped so many out that by the end of the month my parents had to pay £400 and that was when we decided to quit but I think they changed the implant so that it’s sits under a sheet of like tape

the “not aloud to eat that” one reminds me of my best friend. he’s got type one, and I know he’s aloud to eat whatever as long as he knows whats in it. so one day I suggested we go to the shops and buy some chocolate, my treat. he was all for it, until he realised halfway to the shops that he can’t eat any of it because his mum would see his levels go up on her phone and get annoyed at him for buying chocolate for the sake of it XD

old type1 here, "should you be eating that" is a throwback to a time when we didn't have fast acting insulin like humalog and the others. I was on human mixtard in the 90's and you took it in the morning then in the evening, there wasnt any fast acting insulin you could take before a meal, no ability to counter carbs in your meal. Nowadays we have it so much better, the people that say "should you be eating that" just have to catch up, but their hearts are in the right place.

My sister has Type 1 diabetes, and when she was little our parents sometimes had trouble controlling her blood sugar and would have to monitor her carefully for symptoms. This led to us all getting in the habit of asking her, "Are you low? Do you need to check your blood sugar?" every time she was acting upset or grumpy. Eventually as she got older she got super irritated with that because not only were we micromanaging her, we were dismissing her feelings as, "It's not real, it's just your blood sugar." 😂 Update: she's married now, great at managing her diabetes, and is stronger and more energetic than I am.

"Have you tested your blood sugars?" by teachers and siblings was the worst maybe sometimes it's genuine concern but it's the same as saying to a woman is it that time of the month, 1st it's none of your business, 2nd i don't need you for my hypo awareness.

... I get where you're coming from, but for some people when their sugar goes low, they do not recognize it... At all. My father struggled a lot for years because the lower his sugar went the more convinced he was fine. The dexcom made a world of difference because it lets him know so people don't have to pester him

I wish you had kids instead of adults because I'm 11 got it at 7 I can't go to sleepovers I can't be a kid and I hate it when people say I'm happy I don't have type 1 diabetes well I didn't choose to have it

I was diagnosed @ 10 and im sorry you feel that you cant be a kid but as someone who had always had full education on type 1 and giving myself shots and knowing when I need yo check that your fine to go on a sleepover

I was diagnosed 20 yea ago at the age of 5, I would talk to your parents and friends parents bc yea it’s hard but it should not stop you from being a kid, also take care of yourself, I’m 25 now and wished I took better care of myself back then bc now I’m in college and am in a hospital several times a week sometimes months and it sucks, just take care of yourself kid, best of luck to you

I was diagnosed at 5 years old as well. As long as you know how to read carbs, check your blood sugar and give needles, you're fine for sleepovers.

Had T1D for a little over 20 years, and here are my responses, just for grins: 1) "Should you be eating that?/Can you eat that?" - Yes. Should you be in my business? No. 2) "Do you carry needles around in your bag?" - How else am I supposed to take my insulin? Osmosis? Also, it's not all I carry. Look in my purse, man, I'm like Mary Poppins! 3) "Do you have the bad type?" - I don't consider either type to be a good type; one might be slightly easier to deal with, though. 4) "I guess you can't get drunk, then?" - I could, if I wanted to drink enough to get me drunk. I personally choose not to. 5) "Oh, I could never inject myself!" - Well, it's good you don't have to, then, isn't it?! Do you think I like injecting myself?! No! 6) "How could you let this happen to you?" - Oh, I'm sorry, I just couldn't help myself from inheriting it from my mother's side of the family.

First day I came back to school after my diagnosis this girl somehow heard and she interrogated me about it, insisting that I didn't have diabetes because I wasn't fat and "my uncle has diabetes and he's fat". The ignorance was unreal.
