If I was the student I would have took the Insulin and whatever happend happend. You need it to live, which is more important at that moment then obeying the teacher. The teacher definitely was not critically assessing the situation, due to some precomposed beliefs or fleeting feelings at the time.

Mrb Drm Its more than just a needle lol... For insulin it depends if you use pens or a pump: for a pump you have to carry a minimum of extra insulin, reservoirs, cannulas, extra batteries, and alcohol pads. for pens you have to at least carry 2+ pens, backup needles, and alcohol pads. On top of that, you have to carry a glucometer and backup test strips, lancets, and alcohol wipes. Diabetes sucks lmao

Story time: Once we were doing a lesson and it mentioned type two diabetes. Almost everyone in the class looked at me. Straight away my teacher took notice and said. “Alexis does not have that type of diabetes. She has type one, this is type two.” I was so happy. another story: I was at tgi fridays (a restaurant.) and an older couple saw me with my insulin. They asked me if they wanted to do it in a corner near there table and I politely declined as I’m comfortable doing insulin in public. Last story: I was at tgi Fridays (different location) and was holding my insulin pen. A waitress who was ordering out deserts said. “I have type one diabetes as well.” And showed me a band on her wrist that said type one diabetic.

My boyfriend and I are still together for 24 years & counting and have 4 beauitful kids without any fear of being around me as being a diabetic person. Now, he has diabetes type 2 few months ago..it has nothing do with how much sugars or carbs he ate or drank..he never been fat and still isn't fat or chubby. I remember when I was 7 there was a girl in my after school program that was diabetic and was eating a candy (or maybe she was drinking a juice or something, I can’t remember) because her blood sugar was low. A boy asked her why she was allowed to eat candy and she answered that she had diabetes so she needed to have sugar. The boy then said that he wished he had diabetes (obviously not understanding that you don’t really want diabetes, he just meant that he also wanted candy) and I remember the teacher/after school program worker getting suuuuuuper mad at him. She basically cornered him and yelled at him that he should never say that and that he absolutely doesn’t want diabetes. I just remember being terrified and him in hysterical in tears saying that he understood and then apologizing. The girl that had diabetes wasn’t mad or offended, she understood why he had said what he said and she wasn’t mad at all because let’s be honest, if a kid gets a piece of candy and has a valid reason why of course other kids will want it too. To this day I still think that the teacher reacted a little too harshly considering that he was just a 7 or 8 year old child.

When I was in a psychiatric ward the medical doctor refused to let me take insulin for the food I ate! I explained to her the basics of diabetes(which she ought to know as she's a doctor???) Then she accused me of arguing with her and when I told her that I knew what I was supposed to do as I've been a diabetic for over 10 years she told me that I had been doing it wrong! For 10 years! One of my high school friends had type one and we would often be sat together during exams, because our last names were 2 letters and a pronunciation apart, and because she had a bad bladder as well every time an exam was about to start she'd often be in the bathroom, but she would leave her diabetes bag next to me because I was smart enough to tell the proctor that the person sitting beside me has Type 1 diabetes and under state law they can't take the bag away from her during the test. The amount of times I had to tell proctors that there is a law that makes taking an insulin bag away during tests illegal and then convince them is so fucking annoying. She also had a pump that stuck in her arm, and it used to be in her other arm, and there's this horrible scar there because in middle school before I knew her, one of her test Proctors tore the pump out because they thought it was a cheating device. Like, these people are so concerned about cheating that they forget that children do have medical issues and human rights.

Only once have I been offended regarding my diabetes. When I was at some sort of camp other teenagers asked me to not inject Insulin during meals, but to go outside instead. (Yes, they grouped up for that) One of them was "sensitive" (afraid of needles or sth). I told them I would do it under the table and make sure they didn't have to see it. Later I overheard one of them say, that going outside would not be such a bother and that they didn't understand why I did not comply.

School is one of the worst places to have type 1 diabetes. I was diagnosed in 6th grade, I was 12, and I was having a hard time dealing with it. I had great blood sugars, but at first I couldn't even test my own blood sugar so I was completely dependent on the adults around me. My parents were great, but the school nurse (who is literally being paid to do this) had such a weird attitude about it. She always tried to rush me in and out (side note, the school had like 150 students and I was typically the only one in the office. There wasn't a line out the door) so she'd set up my meter and syringe before I got there. Apparently her arthritis made it hard to get the lancets back out, so instead of just having me set up my meter she wouldn't put the lancet in all the way.... it's designed to make you bleed and retract very quickly so it doss minumal damage.... unless you don't push it in. Then it doesn't retract and you have to take it out of your finger, causing way more damage than it's supposed to. That one was fairly easy to fix. I just asked her why she did it that way and then with a little pressure she let me set it up myself again. After about 2 months I could test my blood sugar indepently and it wasn't as big a deal, but I still couldn't inject myself. I could draw my insulin but I'd always just end up sitting there after wiping a site off. I just had this mental block around doing something to my body that would harm it... and I was 12 and dealing with something no one else in my family had so it wasn't expected. About 6 months after I was diagnosed I went to her office before lunch and she told me she wasn't going to give me injections anymore and that I had to do it. A school nurse does NOT have the right to do this to you! But I didnt know that. She wiped down my arm and pinched it for me but made me give the injection... in my arm (would recomend thigh or stomach as a good first injection site because you don't have to strain to reach it). After, I went to the cafeteria bathroom because I was crying and a lunch lady/ nun came and shouted at me to stop crying without even asking what was wrong (don't send your kids to Catholic school! Espically if they have diabetes. Public school is much safer because they're legaly required to always have a nurse in the building). After the fact, my doctors wrote multiple strongly worded letters informing the school nurse that she couldn't do that to diabetic childrenn but it had already happened. It then literally took me 2 whole years to be able to inject insulin by myself. If she had just followed the laws and done her job instead of traumatizing a kid who was dealing with a whole new way of life I don't doubt I would have been able to work through it quickly like i did finger sticks, just at my pace. Her impatience with me, whom treating was her job, made me even more grateful for my wonderful parents though! They didn't sign up for this mess, but they've always supported me when I've needed it and now they're barely involved in my treatment at all. Sometimes you just have to be willing to give people the time they need.

The questions went on and I could see he was visibly tired of answering them so he just went to sleep lol. When we stopped at a restaurant, Alan starting repeating some statements. "Wow that's a hefty steak. Are you sure you're allowed to have it?" We told him the answer in the car. "So like do you have to lose weight?" he was repeating questions over and over again. He even said "Isn't the government trying to take our money though needles?" Daniel was visibly annoyed. So I tried to change the subject but it wouldn't work. At the end of all this, Alan simply says "I still don't feel like it's a real disease." ????????? I completely understand what you're talking about. I had my pump site on my arm one day at work and the uniforms are short sleeved, so one of my coworkers thought itd be a great time to start asking me all the usual questions while I was trying to seat some customers. Someone literally had to tell her to give me a minute to do my job. Type II is not always lifestyle. Period. There is a large genetic component as well as things like PCOS (poly cystic ovarian syndrome) and other reasons why the body loses its sensitivity to the hormones. My body produces WAY more than it should (which meant I used to have chronically low blood sugar and was having to monitor to keep my sugars up enough that I wasn't in real danger. Now... my body has lost sensitivity to it (which my doctors told me would happen eventually) and now I'm on medication to make my body sensitive again. There is a HELL of a lot more to it than just lifestyle choices, but as always, people just LOVE to point the finger of blame at someone whos sick and blame them for being sick.

I’ve been waiting for you guys to make this video for so long! One other thing that I think is totally not understood about diabetes is that it’s not just what you eat that controls your blood glucose. If you are stressed, workout, angry, have a lot of adrenaline, etc all of that can affect your blood glucose. Even if you eat the same thing for every meal and know exactly the macros for the meal and dose appropriately, there’s still a ton of other factors that can make your numbers too high or too low.

I once used to think that if I had diabetes I'd just die because I wouldn't be able to inject myself. But I have a deadly allergy to tree nuts, and the day came when I had to use my epi-pen. And it turned out I can inject myself just fine if my other option is death. You never know what it's going to be like unless you're actually in that position. And I know it's not exactly the same thing as injecting insulin, but it's similar enough that it changed my perspective.

Now after a very long time I understood why the school would give us a medical form to fill *every* year. I used to get annoyed but only when I reached a certain age did I understand that there are chronic illnesses such as diabetes type 1 or epilepsy or asthma. It’s a prototype the nhs were trialing it’s didn’t have an official name we just called it x12 but the implant was £50 a month or whenever it needed replacing because it got caught on clothing and ripped out easily and the insulin cost another 70 per month but it may be cheaper when it’s mass produced

I work with teens on a residential unit and we've had a couple type 1 diabetic kids stay. They made me nervous when they refused to eat when their blood sugar was low. I think when you have diabetes you need to talk to people and give them information about diabetes because if something happens and the blood sugar gets too low and you don't respond, people need to know what to do, so I think sometimes these questions are necessary.

My 8 year old sister has type one diabetes and she was diagnosed when she was around 5 and our school was great and funded for us to hold a run where a bunch of people would run around the school a bunch and how ever many times would raise an amount of money to donate to finding a cure and helping support other people and we got a page in our yearbook and it was great :) I loved that school and she's an absolute brave kid and im so proud of her. I was on human mixtard in the 90's and you took it in the morning then in the evening, there wasnt any fast acting insulin you could take before a meal, no ability to counter carbs in your meal. I love this video. I'm type 1 on the insulin pump and sensor. I was diagnosed at age 15 the summer before my freshman year of high school . I was in gym class and my gym teacher was a dummy. I did not know exactly what a low was yet. I started feel extremely dizzy and felt like I would passed out it was the worst feeling. My sister has Type 1 diabetes, and when she was little our parents sometimes had trouble controlling her blood sugar and would have to monitor her carefully for symptoms. This led to us all getting in the habit of asking her, "Are you low? Do you need to check your blood sugar?" every time she was acting upset or grumpy. Eventually as she got older she got super irritated with that because not only were we micromanaging her, we were dismissing her feelings as, "It's not real, it's just your blood sugar." 😂 Update: she's married now, great at managing her diabetes, and is stronger and more energetic than I am.

My life on a daily bases!!!! Story time: Went for an interview, things where going well. They asked if there was anymore they needed to know. I told them I'm diabetic. They response "oh, it's probably best we don't hire you as you are contagious. We wouldn't want to infect our clients." I stared in disbelief.

Was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about a year ago mine was caused by a mix of genetics and poor nutrition and no I did not eat a ton of sugar as a kid, no I didn’t excerise, I was a relatively healthy person I just did not eat much or well plus diabetes runs strong in my family mainly my dads side it’s not entirely my fault but I’m doing better now these days and my hope for those who have it worse than I do that they find a cure and for them to stay strong

When i was in 4th grade, a kid brought in some rocket candies. I asked if i could have some, and he said no because he needed them to keep his blood sugar low because he is diabetic. I nodded and understood since i have family members who are diabetic (leading me to understand it). In 7th grade, the same kid brings in a shit load of candy, like, BUCKET LOADS. I ask if he was saving that in his locker for his diabetes, and he said, and i quote, "I don't have diabetes". I caught a grade 4 boy in a lie, 3 years later... Now the kid is a drug addict and a pathological liar.
