Here's a tip to keep the dishes from piling up. Just have one or two dinner plates, forks, spoons, knives, etc. Put the rest away. Whenever you eat, wash your one dish and knife, fork and spoon as soon as you finish eating. Takes about 30 seconds, your dishes never pile up, and they are always clean.

Great advice. My wife passed almost 2 years ago. Being by myself is not something I enjoy. Some say they like the peace they have. I had an opposite situation several days ago. I got a call from my 11 years old granddaughter's school. They couldn't reach her Mom so they called me. I was having a bad day dealing with my loneliness and cancer situation. My granddaughter was screaming her teeth hurt and was at the nurses office. I rushed to the school and took her to the dentist for a loose tooth. Thus my day was turned upside down. Yet it was great to spend the afternoon with my granddaughter and have lunch with her. It made me feel I was useful and can help when needed.

Clearly you are not doing the right things for your health. Where do you think cancer comes from? It comes mainly from your diet (except certain types of cancer such as lung cancer). This means they are mostly due to people's own lifestyle choices. Loneliness is also a choice, an emotional addiction to people that you refuse to see for what it is and dump it. Try developing a life philosophy like stoicism. You can't control everything. The things you can't control you must discard because they waste your energy. Focus only on the things you can control, your diet, exercise, etc. This approach can only improve your experience to some degree.

I resolved this problem. I have no family, they’ve all passed away. I certainly don’t care to remarry. I moved to a poorer country so I could afford to live off my social security. After a few years of getting to know the locals I made a deal with a young man and his wife, that I get to live with them until I die. They take care of me and when I’m dead, they inherit what I have, which is considerable in their country. Any day now we will have a new baby in the house. Never had children, so I’m really looking forward to being “a grandmother” and teaching the baby English. I feel like I’ve got new purpose in life.

The one simple thing as a whistle can be life saving in any situation at any age. I’ve been touting this for years. It’s louder and carries farther than your voice and doesn’t require a lot of effort to signal someone. I use one set of dishes and clean them after eating. When I’m lazy, I use paper plates and plastic utensils. Use once and done. My neighbor has a key to get into my house in an emergency. No drama queen ex wives, stupid kids, or grand kids and no animals, to create problems. Life everyday is SO -O-O-O easy. Respectfully suggest at some point you will retire and the crash of NOT working 40-80 hours will set in. Consider anything, anything, that helps you slowly off-ramp from such a high level of activity towards a retired status. If your body allows, walk a couple miles a day. I found: People look suspiciously at me (I look younger than I am) if I walked the streets, always walking new streets because I am curious how "normies" live. I got a dog. This dog is a pain but also, showed me they are semi-sentient (aussies anyway) and astonishingly intuitive. Sure, picking up the dog doo blows, but an unending opportunity to chat, interface, and NEVER see them again, almost always. Other thing. If you, like me, despise working out, it turns out merely bending over a few times a day to the ground (picking up the poo, brush dog, whatever) really helps well beyond merely walking or getting some cardio. I think, pre-civilization, people either bent down or were burdensome (scavenging or whatnot) so the spinal cord has no pump, but if you bend in your later years amidst exercise, this duplicates the motion, and mixes the brain-spinal (CSF) fluid and for me, I predictably, repeatedly, sleep better that night. YMMV of course. Wish you well.

If you find someone that's really a good match, you don't have to live alone in silence and you get human interaction which is invaluable. We also maintain our own interests, some friends in common, we are in a senior community, but this works in any community.

Now I spend my days in the company of 3 dogs, 9 cats, and have my garden. I never knew how good I sleep by not having anyone on my bed. Been celibate and hermit for 7 years. This lifestyle fits me. I do things at my own pace, and the quiet and peaceful days have restored my nervous system. If I die alone, no problem. No one dies alone. You will see how this is true. Don't worry, relax, enjoy life. Pursue hobbies. DO take care of yourself, cook at home, be clean. You deserve it.

Back in August I tried to get approval to see a cardiologist. I just received a denial letter at the end of September. At least the illegal aliens and non-veterans are cared for. A number of years ago, a spine doctor asked me how I was feeling at my follow-up appointment. I told him I hadn’t been approved for physical therapy (it had been 7 weeks since my first appointment). These are all great tips for seniors, not just men. I'm in my 40s and work a desk job. My physical condition has definitely deteriorated in the last few years and I'm making an effort to get more active. I also have a grandmother who now lives in a home with dementia. She shouldn't have lived alone as long as she did. Mental deterioration may hamper it, but seniors should be honest with themselves about when they should be moving to a facility with oversight. I come from a family of deeply independent people, but there comes a point when you just can't take care of yourself. Also can't stress the point about de-cluttering. It took months to clear out the house and we found items from as far back as the 60s that clearly hadn't been used in decades. Most of it was useless and thrown out.

Lotta truth here. Especially about emergencies and nobody else around. I “do” keep my phone with me at all times while in my home. Another thing is having to be in the hospital for something, and not having anyone around. I know for a fact I was treated differently, because no one was there to fight for me, or know how I’m being treated. My lesson there was to tell someone I’m in the hospital, and get them to visit. They gave me laughing gas and the pain went away and I was able to get myself onto the gurney, I had an x-ray and was cleared of any severe back problem. Lesson learned, if back pain returns, set up precautions, take strong pain killer if needed before bed. Keep pain killers, water, walking canes, phones near bed just in case. If I had been alone that morning, I would have laid on the floor for many hours unable to get up.

This video should be required viewing not only for old guys but for their kids as well. I'm single and live alone. My two boys in their 30s are not interested in marriage or having kids. They come by for special occasions, but thats it. I sometimes worry about not having a support system as I'm in my late 60s, still trying to maintain my house of 30 years. Your points about exercise, maintaining a routine, and being proactive in your social life are well taken. I even watched it twice.😂👍🏽🏝🇵🇭

Good advice! I am 71. My dog and I start our day with a two mile walk before sunrise. That serves as the inspiration to stay active during the day. I push mow instead of using my riding mower. As a veteran, I stay active in the American Legion as the Finance Officer. There are so many activities out there for seniors. I do not drink alcohol or sugary drinks. I make my own healthy meals. It's easy to do if you make your healthy practices routine. Make your bed everyday. Simple things like that. Thank you for your video and your concern. Rob in N.C.

At 84 years old/single/live alone I still easily maintain several raised-bed garden plots and very much look forward to engaging in political activities with my energized/likeminded friends. ..Years ago, well meaning people told me that I shouldn't wander into the woods to gather firewood or where I go to just sit quietly and reflect; surrounded by God's glory. ...If I took their advice the quality of my living would have been like a leaf that died, fell to the earth and dried up. ...One of my achievements is to be that of a role model for people in their fifties who appear to be deeply engaged to their sofa. One of my goals is to feed a black bear out of my hand that I often see on my walks. ...In the past, I used to feed an adolescent Gray Fox out of my hand as well as many chipmunks. ...Aloneness is not lonliness. ...It is not good to be motivated by fear. ...God is good.

Hi, I’m Don. I’ll turn eight five in December. In good health, no debts and still interested in life, but I am getting lazier every day. Gardening has become more of a chore and the damn recliner is awfully comfortable. I keep a harmonica and a box of everything I need for my watercolor paintings within arms reach. Let me warn you about wildlife. Back in the late seventies I was bit by a black bear while in my sleeping bag. I worked for the Forest Service and was camping out on the Snake River when a bear walked into our camp of seventeen people, in the middle of the night and bit me on the head. Before we could react, he went to the other side of our group and bit our supervisor’s leg through his sleeping bag. BE VERY VERY CAUTIOUS OF WILDLIFE.. 13:25 I don’t want the responsibility of taking care of a pet so I’ve made friends with my neighbor’s nice and friendly dogs.

Being active helps, but the silence when im home alone is deafening and oppressive. I would like to meet someone, but the women my age are too old, and younger women are such a mystery. I don't even know how to start with them..Good Luck and God bless fellas

This is an important message for the elderly to always have people in touch daily for their wellbeing. I see elderly couples daily in my profession, most of the men do little for themselves because their wife takes care of everything they remind me of little boys with their mother sat in the waiting room for their appointment. I'm not being disrespectful & I have respect for good traditional couples we need them for society children & family but a lot of men lose the skills to self care because of marriage and relationships and are totally lost after divorce or becoming widower. You said you were single 15 years so you have those skills which is great you can keep them and have the best of both worlds. My point is self awareness and autonomy are important for everyone in a relationship or not the relationship part is the smaller detail from my experience. Great advice all around this really helps people.

Excellent info and ideas. Loneliness is huge. I accepted a part time job 2 days per week as a lifeguard. I get to meet people and talk to them. I get out of the house at least 5 days per week to be around others. I joined a church, but it's terribly impersonal. The YMCA has camaraderie. I wear an alert necklace when out on my 23 acres and I have an Internet check in service that allows 2 of my relatives to call if I don't check in.

@gybx4094 everything you mention is totally sensible. Why does my dad refuse all sensible measures and options offered to him ? (He was born in 1945. Different generation, maybe…) Yah, man. I’m an introvert and require more a little more alone time than the average bear, but humans are social creatures: I can’t imagine and wouldn’t want 100% alone time all the time. Hard for me to understand his position. Why can’t my Dad be more like @gybx4094 🙏

People ask me how I manage by myself. I can go for days without speaking to or seeing another human. It doesn't bother me at all. I tell them the most important thing you need to do is to make friends with yourself. How do you do that? Well, first off, become the kind of person you like to be around! Find hobbies you like to do and do them. Don't rely on other people for any kind of validation or acknowledgement. That's the biggie. Become self-contained.

@@Shaolin91z You may not have to talk with other people but you do have to talk with your self. There is no avoiding it. If I remember correctly, Jesus said to fall in love with yourself and then fall in love with others in the same way. There is nothing super natural about it.

Living alone is not isolation. The goal is to keep pesky women out of your residence, out of your wallet and out of your peace. Everything else can be arranged for. Do you think an older female companion is actually going to do anything for a man other than collect life insurance premiums.

While your points are well taken, it seems that the value you place on the female companionship is an emergency backup to the ER, helping keep the house clean, getting a ride somewhere or help “fix things” (dubious at best). That has to be weighed against 24/7 nagging, chronic discontent, potential loss of your assets etc. Thanks to delivery services, Uber and emergency medical alerts you can have all these things AND maintain serenity.

All women want is for someone, ANYONE, to house, clothe and feed them. For you younger guys, always remember this; Mama's baby, Papa's maybe. 1/3 of newborns do NOT belong to the husband/boyfriend. It belongs to their side piece. Before signing anything, ALWAYS have a blood/DNA test.
