Y'all, Broken stitches like that dont matter. Soles are glued on mostly and the stiches function like pegs. Cowboyboots use pegs. If you wore through the leather thats a different story

Hi Chris, Thank you for pointing out how important pictures of the heel and the soles are. I always ask for it if I do not see any of it. I have never encountered a listing in which the sole was pictured in a weird angle to cover broken stitching or anything like that. I will keep this in mind. I could also benefit from the Covid pandemic. A few weeks ago, I bought two brand-new Allen Edmonds for half the retail price from two different eBay sellers. Both sellers had a similar explanation why they sold the shoes: Shoes have been bought during the pandemic, jobs went complete remote and they do not go to the office anymore. Therefore, the shoes are not needed anymore. It was hitting the jackpot for me because these shoes will serve me for at least 10 years. Merry Christmas Chris.

Hi there, great to hear from you and thanks for sharing your findings and observations 🙂 Allen Edmonds are a good middle of the road shoe equal (arguably) to that of Loake. The Strand design is very popular in the Allen Edmond range and also the MacAllister I'm led to believe. I have also heard of many people no longer wearing there shoes for work purposes. Personally, I hybrid work, 3 days at home and 2 in the office and it doesn't stop me wearing my shoes whilst at home or when I go out in the day or weekends. Great news for people who still need and want to wear good quality shoes, but I would note people are now selling shoes on eBay as small business ventures now, this has inflated the prices a little, but there are still some great deals out there. It sounds like to got a couple of good results - well done you, welted shoes are great for resoling and as you said should last you a good 10-15 years. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to you as well👍🎅🙂

Great advice, Chris, and some additional helpful comments from subscribers too. Further to what you say about width fittings of shoes and boots, this information can sometimes be found on the sidewall inside the shoe itself. That is certainly the case with all of my Loakes and Samuel Windsors. It can either be in printed or stamped format, or sometimes both. Should you need photographs of examples, I will happily send them to you. At the risk that I may have missed it, understanding garment labelling and size conversions (including metric to imperial) might be worth considering for a future video. Lastly, followers of your channel will be only too well aware how you have really pulled the stops out on content this past year. You have every reason to be proud at the way your subscriber base has responded accordingly. Well done, and my best wishes for 2024.😊

Hello John, great to hear from you, again and thank you for the kind words. Glad you found the advice helpful, and big thanks to everyone pitching in with their insights. In regard to the width fittings - thanks for raising this point, it was something I should have mentioned in greater detail and it is a top tip on checking the sidewall inside the shoe, as this not only gives you the size and width fitting, but also the model number, and the Last number, you are correct this information is either printed or stamped and in some case handwritten. It is something to definitely keep that in mind for future shoe hunts. Please feel free to send some images to me, that would be great. As for garment labelling and size conversions, fantastic suggestion! I'll add that to the list for upcoming videos. Always good to cover all the bases. Thank you for your continued support, John, thank you for the shoutout on the content - it means a lot to me that you and the rest of the gang are enjoying it. Here's to looking good and feeling great in 2024. Best wishes to you too, and stay sharp dear friend, looking forward to seeing you again in the new year at the impending meet and greet.🙂👍

1. Also stay away from so called "corrected grain leather", that is inferior leather that is coated with plastic. These leather shoes do not accept any polish and once the leather is broken there is no remedy. There are also reputable makes that offer such leather shoes. 2. Bear in mind that Italian shoes are often one size smaller than they are in Europe and that they are generally somewhat slimmer, so if you have a broad foot rather stay away from them. And don't forget that American sizes are bigger, so an American size 13 is a size 12 (UK). 3. One feature you can't avoid with Blake stitched and Goodyear welted shoes: the pre-owner may have left left his foot impression in the cork bed of the sole. That can be somewhat irritating and it can only be remedied if the sole is replaced and then the cork bed is replaced too.

Hi Adrian, these are all very valid points to take into consideration when looking to buy online. That is why it is so important to do your research into the items you are intending to purchase and know your own sizes and research the condition of the shoes prior to making that final bid or purchase. 👍🙂 Thank you Adrian for your continued support and contribution to the channel and I hope you have a wonderful Christmas 🎅🙂

Yes! Lets take Dr. Martens boots for example, they are called leather but its more like a thin suede coated with polyurethane.

It really isn't necessary to resole a pair just because the stitching is broken. If I really wanted to do that, I'd have to resole a given pair of shoes every few months of wearing them.
@TheBritishDapper
@TheBritishDapper 9 ай бұрын
The advise is for when purchasing, and getting a great deal, true the shoes will last a reasonable period of time once the stitching on the sole has been worn through, but using this as an indicator when to buy or not to buy, it is a sound method. I did also mention about the stitching on the uppers and in that case, again it can be repaired, but it is something you need to consider when you are make a bid or buying🙂

Agree that the ebay market doesn't support the higher end shoe esp of lessen known brands; for example selling an unworn pair of Carmina Janus Suede Boots at half price - but still difficult to sell. Good place to buy and trade on your way to ultimate buy. Occasionally, I have had buyers ask for the external sole measurements, which I have found slightly odd. but always comply with requests

Thanks for sharing your insights into the market. I have also seen shoes for sale with images of the sole width and shoe sole length. But would note that this is not any indication of shoe size or width fitting as the soles can be cut differently for different designs, spade cut etc. eBay is great for mid range shoes though, Crocket & Jones, Loake, Cheaney, Church, Grenson etc. Hope you have an exceptional Christmas and thank you for your continued support🙂🎅👍

Chris, Thank you for the information. My problem with buying British shoes on eBay is sizing. Being from the US it's hard to figure the difference in size. I have purchased a number of US branded Allen Edmonds with good results using the same method you mentioned. I have gotten $300 to $400 dollar shoes for under $100 at times. Hope you and your family have a wonderful Holiday season cheers Ron

Hi Ron, I wear a US size 8.5 or 9, depends on the manufacturer. That is a UK size 7.5 or 8. I have bought shoes from Trickers, Cheaney, Grenson and Loake, all in UK size 7.5. They all fit great. I hope that helps. Merry Christmas.

@@kaykunz4730 thanks for the information . What Would the width be for a US D ? Would that be medium? Cheers Ron
@TheBritishDapper
@TheBritishDapper 9 ай бұрын
In answer to your question a US D ( (standard width fitting in the US) would be considered as a narrow width fitting in the UK. But the standard width fitting in the UK is considered (depending on manufacturer as an F UK fitting) I would suggest that you go for a UK width F fitting is comparable to a US D width fitting on the American and British version of the Brannock Devices used to measure width fittings. Hope this helps🙂

Hi Ron, lovely to hear from you again, essentially UK sizes are a complete size lower than US sizing, US 8.5 = UK 7.5 and a US 10 = UK 9. But there are very easy conversion charts available if you google them to convert US sizes to UK sizes and vis versa. Hope that helps. Hope you have a wonderful Christmas (Holiday season) and a very happy New Year Ron👍🙂🎅

So, you are ok with buying refurbished shoe? I never thought of buying refurbished shoe
@TheBritishDapper
@TheBritishDapper 9 ай бұрын
Hi Mo, if you mean second hand shoes, then no I have no problem buying them, I can pick up a pair of shoes that would cost anything from £250 to £450 new at a fraction of the price, say £35 including postage up to £135 that have possible only been worn one or twice for a wedding or something like that, or that are even new or unworn as factory seconds or when the person bought them they were to small for them when they bought them new online. I tend to spray them inside with a disinfectant spray for shoes as a precaution though. The shoes I showed in the video at the beginning (the Loake's) had not even been worn outside when I received them, the normally retail at £189 and I got them for £35 including postage. But if you can afford to buy new that's great👍🙂
