Thanks! I am 70 years old and I have been wearing wingtips since Iwas a teen ager. It was briefly a "surfers shoe" during the Beacg Boy Days. I had no ides the actual name and history of this shoe. I have 3 pairs somewhere. You have justified my life long style choice, when no one else wears them in my circle. I have bought a cup of coffee for you, except I ordered tea instead. I subscribed so will see you again. Oh yeah, I love your term "intentionally well dressed", yep thats me, in my own California way.

I have been a fan of full brogues since I bought my first pair of shoes. I'm glad to hear that you don't stringently adhere to the informality of the brogue. I've had many instances throughout my life where I've needed to wear my tuxedo, and I've always worn my black full brogues with a mirror polish. I've despised patent leather since I was a boy and first learned to shine my own shoes. When you're in a crowd of men all in black tie where everybody's wearing the same patent leather black shoes, I've never been embarrassed to wear my full brogues and always subtly stand out.

I bought my first brogue shoes last year, went with a good middle ground and chose a semi-brogue oxford in burnished dark brown, to go in between my black captoe oxfords and my reddish tan suede derby shoes, really nice trio of formality that I can add to later. The brogues instantly became my favourite shoe.

Brogue shoes are my absolute favourite dress or semi-formal shoes. I have a pair of medium brown quarter brogue oxfords by Allen Edmonds which are one of the workhorses in my wardrobe. -I can wear them with anything from a blue or light grey suit, to a sport coat or blazer, with a pair of grey flannels, khaki chinos, corduroys, or even dark wash denim. I'm in the market now for a pair of pre-owned full brogue wingtips, again in a medium brown. Of course pickings can be rather slim when you're searching for shoes in a size 12 EEE. When you consider that the blazer and the sport coat have just about replaced the suit as "dress attire" for most men, I'd be interested in hearing your opinions on various more casual shoes that would fit the bill with a sport coat, like penny loafers, tassel loafers, driving moccasins, boat shoes, etc.

When I was a young chap, I frequently met a very old gentleman who had been head porter in one of Paris' finer hotels. And he told me the first look any hotel staff would take at a guest would be at his shoes (without the guests noticing it!) - not only the make but also their state and whether they are polished. As this would be the classical weak point: one would invest in a suit, a coat or a tie, but neglect the shoes. I have never forgotten this - and it has prevented me from buying cheap shoes which fall apart after some time. Instead rather wait for some time on Ebay (if you can't afford new ones), until something suitable comes up.

Is dark suede limited to summer months ? I see Crocket and Jones offering treated suede brogues which resit rain and snow. I see them with rubber or even lug soles for traction. It seems like this could be used in fall/winter or spring as well ?
@TheChapsGuide3 ай бұрын
No sir, suede makes a good winter companion, the real defining quality of a summer/winter boot will be the sole. Leather is basically best suited for a summer boot. Alternatively opt for Dainite or other rubber options for the winter months.

I'm sadly not a fan. I have owned just one pair and did not love them at all. They always reminded me of the protective footwear worn by welders and other metalworkers. Do you like tan brogue shoes Ash? I think walnut and burgundy are more versatile!
@TheChapsGuide Жыл бұрын
Burgundy is the ultimate versatile shoe, walnut less so. Walnut is good for casual attire, but is far less of a performer in the formal stakes and absolutely should not be worn with navy or grey suits.

Hi Ash, I would like to hear your views on the use of stick on rubber soles on leather soled shoes to get greater mileage , or do they have a detrimental effect on the leather , I've just bought a pair of loake Chesters ,and would like to wear them every day ,but leather repairs could be expensive .
@TheChapsGuide Жыл бұрын
I am personally not a fan of stick-on soles. I would opt for models with factory rubber (Dainite) soles opposed to leather in most instances die to the added versatility and durability without any reduction in style. With Loake, when the leather wears down, you can send the shoes back to the factory for a re-sole and they will be able to swap out the leather for a rubber sole (as long as that model of shoe is available with a rubber sole as well as leather).

For the most versatile pair do you believe Dark Brown or Medium would be the better choice? Sorry if I missed it in the video. I'm still trying to decide but currently I actually have a light shade of brown being my Cap toe Oxfords that do feature a bit of broguing. Not sure if they would still go well with my charcoal trousers but I suppose it would work fine. @@TheChapsGuide Much appreciated! One last question on this post. Would you prefer a Wingtip Derby or Oxford? For my lifestyle I feel an Oxford would be better especially for Church and other semi formal events but Derbies would be nice for weekends perhaps in a suede instead of hard leather. I'm sure it's personal preference though. I just hope they wouldn't look too casual with trousers. I've been slowly upgrading my wardrobe but taking the advice from one of your videos in focusing on Quality rather than Quantity for most garments. The next 2 shoes I purchase I definitely don't want them to be too cheap. Hope you're enjoying your weekend and thanks for your time.

Hi Ash, quick question. I have just bought a new pair of Loake 1880 Chester tan brouges. What would be the best colour Saphir wax polish to buy. Light brown or cognac? What's your thoughts.
@TheChapsGuide2 жыл бұрын
If you dont want the colour to darken too much, go for neutral of mid-brown, as these are rather light in tint and will not significantly darken the tan colour. If it were me, I would go for mid-brown, but it will impart some colour. If you want to keep as natural as possible, you could just apply Saphir Renovateur, which will maintain the colour, but will not provide as much protection from the elements.
