Things to consider when buying your first metal lathe

I would add that if the lathe you buy is not equipped with a quick change gear box, make sure that all the change gears are present. My second lathe was a South Bend 405Y, from 1934-35. I didn’t realize how rare that lathe is, and it didn’t come with any change gears. This particular lathe uses 20 DP gears. I had to buy them on eBay, and the cost, one at a time, exceeded the purchase price of the lathe. You can get change gears for the more common lathes, but it will slow you down on actually getting to use it until you find them, and without them you will not be able to do threading or change your feeds and speeds.

Haha I definitely just got excited when I bought my first lathe. Like you said though they are pretty easy to get rid of and you are not going to get hurt if you buy it somewhat smartly.
