I cannot stress enough how important it is to take winter seriously when thinking of moving up here. It is very dark, very cold, for a very long time. The only way around the long, bitter cold is to stay in Anchorage and anywhere south of Anchorage. Still bitter, still cold, just not for nearly as long as everywhere north of Eagle River.

Hi Martha, I currently live in Tucson, Arizona and am absolutely sick of the brutal heat and dry desert. I'm originally from Dallas, TX and even lived in Dover, De and absolutely love winter. I'm also a film student and will be graduating next year where I will be moving to California to get my career started. But once I get "successful" enough I'd love to visit and possibly move to Anchorage. Again I love the cold and love nature and I'm even more creative at night...which Alaska has plenty of. This vide was very helpful and would love to stay in touch with you . I just subscribed to your channel and look forward to watching more of your videos. Thank You.

I lived and worked in Fairbanks, Alaska for 4 years as a TV producer. I moved away to Los Angeles in 2008, which turned out to be the exactly opposite of a smart move because that's the year the recession started and the year before Alaska totally blew up as a place to find reality TV and documentary work. I would recommend just skipping Los Angeles and moving to AK and taking whatever job you can get. Yeah it's expensive up there but not nearly as expensive or as much of a rat race as Los Angeles. In Anchorage, the main guy to go to for video production is Jon Butzke at Talking Circle, who I would recommend getting in contact with either way.

Just a heads up, you might want to look into the night aspect for your night life activities. In the winter it is dark, but in the summer it is light pretty late as I am guessing you probably already know. So outdoor day activities is a plus, night activities are probably going to be a negative.
@DraylianKaiju
@DraylianKaiju Жыл бұрын
@@mushroomking8304 that kind of day/night schedule will suit me just fine. Daytime is when I prefer to go out and nights I like to stay in and either work (paint, write, sculpt, ECT).

I think the only consideration I haven't made is the outdoorsy bit. I'm living in Texas, and I really want out of the oppressive heat. It's a thing where I would be more outdoors if I wasn't as hot. I don't have any ambition of having "40 acres," or living "off the grid." I just want to work and chill (literally, figuratively.)

Think about northern Idaho or western Montana instead. Alaska outdoors is extremely rugged and even off-putting in some places. The lower 48 has much “happier” wilderness.

January is the coldest month and it's pretty short day light. It can be anything from 15F to -20F. Not good for people with anemia.
@rockstarofredondo

We had a lot of -30 and below nights and -20 days here in January 2024, and at least one -30 day/night in January 2023, and we are in a milder part. It’s not a big deal if it lasts a day or 2 but when it goes on for weeks it can be brutal, especially if your house is hard to heat or you heat with wood. Those very cold days are most likely to happen in January.

@MarthaBrookbank
@MarthaBrookbank 2 жыл бұрын
There's internet in the populated areas. I heard we just got Starlink so you'll be able to get internet anywhere now. Of course, you can do whatever you like indoors at your home or with friends etc. But there are just not a lot of indoor options for activities like you see in some of the lower 48 states. We don't have many big malls, theme parks, etc.
