I used the Mitas E07 front & rear on my DR650, liked the rear but the front was so-so, like you I found the front not aggressive enough. On my '17 Africa Twin I decided to get an E07 rear, but on the front I went with a Continental TKC80 which is a 40/60 tyre. So far I'm much happier with the more aggressive front tyre, gives me better grip and better braking on the loose stuff.

Good to know! I'm about to switch at 8k and I must say that I'm impressed with their life span. I saw that they recently put out a new version of the E07, so I'll give that a good look.

When I first saw this video and you were talking about the front tire not performing well, my first thought was you have it running the wrong way. I thought that couldn't be right, but after looking at a lot of other videos of people using this tire, I do believe you have it running the wrong way. Looking at the front of it, it looks like the chevrons are pointing up, they should be pointing down. Front tire is basically running backwards. I've had mud tires like this before. The "arrow" or pointed side of the "chevron" of the tread should always be going in the direction of tire rotation. I'd flip it and see how it works before trying a new tire. I hear these are really good tires for off road. The way it's running now, it is funneling sand and water inwards to the center of the tire where the rubber meats the turf. If you flip the tire around, it will funnel stuff out and away from the tire and you might be surprised at how much better traction it gets. Great video though. I'm really looking at one of the Adventure bikes in a year or two. This bike is now a serious contender. Great video! Ride safe!
@ColoradoDualSport7 жыл бұрын
You know, you aren't the first person to say this to me. Hobbs actually broght it up on our last ride. We took a look and it is installed correctly as per the directional arrows on the tire. I will triple check, but we looked at it for a good while out in the woods. The problem is that we ride a lot of pea gravel and the tread depth *or lack there of* dosn't allow a lot of "sink in and grab" like a traditional knobbie does.
@Toadster2507 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. You almost always see the tread pointing forward on directional tires but I don't have one of these tires to know. It looks like the rear tire has the tread pointing forward.

tip: buy all the Givi stuff direct from a Euro website. You can save like 40% due to US price controls. Just don't order anything textile related and you'll avoid import tariffs. Skid plate, racks, panniers, crash bars are all considered automotive parts and not subject to import taxes. Pick a large Euro retailer (think Revzilla equivalent of Euro) and you'll be fine.

Thanks for review. Great bike! I'll add some mine mods experience. Think about to change stock handguards to aluminium Cycra or Acerbis, at last test drive in middle mud, we fall down AT1000, and broke plastic handguard completely. And i don't really like this plastic top plate with "Oh, crap handles." )) i hope your top case is mount to metal frame. The standard exhaust is too big and heavy, prefer LeoVince or akrapovic. In my AT750 i've changed standard exhaust to LV one, and have made custom case racks with top plate, like solid system. They are more compact than givi or touratech or else racks, so im not so wide on the road 1.05cm with x2 36 liters cases. Oh yeah, bagster tank cover save your tank from scratch mess in desert, and it will be easier to hold on bike with your knees. Between left case and bike enough space to add some toolbox or fuel canister, idk is there someone making them for AT1000? like bmw doing it for 1200gs.. The tires are good, my friends, who drive over Mongolia also using Mitas E07/09, i'd prefer Metzeler Enduro Sahara 3, extreme safety on wet road, and enough good at off-road. I'm already looking at AT1000, but wanna ride more and more thousands on my AT750, especially after all these changes i've done. Combination CRF1000 & DRZ400 - is awesome! Anywheregobikes!

This is one of the BIG issues that I have with large ADV bikes [2:02]: the need for CRASH BARS (usually). And I am not picking on just the Africa Twin here, my concern applies to all ADV bikes needing crash protection, usually the fairing-ed multi-cylinder bikes. These large bikes are already on the heavy side straight off the showroom floor. The last thing you want to do is having to add more WEIGHT to an already heavy bike - it kind off defeats the purpose, doesn't it?! My Suzuki DR 650 is not quite as comfortable on the road or over long cruising distances as a large ADV bike, but it is VERY capable off-road, extremely robust and drop-resistant, relatively light, and best of all does not require crash bars (making it even heavier)! The same goes for other singles like KTM 690s, XR 650Ls, KLRs etc.

Thank you! Removal is easy after initial installation. When you first install it you need to install a bracket which requires dropping the exhaust, but that bracket isn't "part of the skid plate" if you understand what I'm trying to say.

Disadvantages of the Honda Africa Twin to think about: - *Higher Fork Wind* - with the large fork well ATV helmets (mainly) experience buffeting on the African Twin. - *Poor Rear Shock* - The Africa Twin rear shock has a lot of “bounce”. - *Small Wind Screen* - taller riders will have more wind exposure. - *Small Gas Tank* - 18.8 liter - *Non-Standard Controls* - handle bar left side controls have the horn & turn signal buttons/switches reversed. So a lot of new Africa Twin riders blow their horns before a turn & vice versa. - *Very Small Foot Pegs* - They are tiny. - *Uses Tubed Tires* - Tube-less tires are much, much better! - *Bare Bone Bike* - The Honda Africa Twin seems designed to make you buy accessories other bikes come standard with. You need to get: a center stand, a 12 volt outlet (s), cruise control, etc. *The Honda Africa Twin is a great “adventure” motorcycle* but I hope version 2.0 addresses the above list of problems for a better user friendly bike.
@ColoradoDualSport7 жыл бұрын
I would have to disagree with everything but the rear shock. From a guy who originally rode a DRZ-400S I love the fact that you can buy a "blank sheet of paper" and customize it to your liking. The price difference between those kitted out bikes you mentioned leaves the room to purchase those farkles. Both my AT and DRZ look nothing like they did the day I rode them home and personally I find that great.
@sweetcostarica7 жыл бұрын
No problem. We are different people with different needs & motivations. I wrote exactly the same disadvantages on another KZbinr channel and he said: "Good stuff .. I use a road helmet with a higher screen so don't get the buffeting (almost perfect now) Agree the pegs are too small as well , looking at pivot pegs .. it is a great bike just needs a bit more tweaking" EDIT: Note - He also made a video detailing much of the same problems I mentioned.
@ColoradoDualSport7 жыл бұрын
Go for the pivot pegs. They are amazing on this bike. I've had them for a few months now and I want some for my DRZ as well.
@sweetcostarica7 жыл бұрын
Sorry ColoradoDualSport I have just finished saving up money for a motorcycle and will get one very soon. So my "Disadvantages of the Honda Africa Twin..." list was just want I found out. It is not my choice. I have Pros & Cons lists for every "Adventure" bike I like. ***I was just sharing what ruled out the Honda AF for me.*** I will get a *Yamaha Super Tenere* for it's advantages vs disadvantages for my style of riding. EDIT: I was a BMW Adventure guy with having three (3) BMW motorcycles in my life & found them lacking but OK.
@sweetcostarica7 жыл бұрын
"but I hope version 2.0" said by me in 2017. *Verson 2.0 is here!* in the new Honda *Africa Twin Adventure Sport.* This new AF addresses most of my concerns above. So we both won here. Have an excellent New Year ColoradoDualSport!!

Man you bike looks great with the luggage on it. Like it my friend. I would like to see Touratech Add that missing piece to their crash bars as well as another issue with the bottom bolts. I bought the same Ram mount for the Phone for my bike after watching his video as well. And just FYI, it does not fit the 6 Plus. My bad hehehe, So I made one. Hermit didn't come help me with my installs so far, hehehe. I wonder if he will come by and help me with the rest when I get it back from the powder cant guy hehehe. I know it rains pretty regular there in Colorado, how do your tires do in wet pavement? 10K miles, that is awesome, keep us posted on your milage and let us know. I think you are right on the traction control, if you are used to doing the traction control yourself, it is a huge hinderenace mohave the bike start stalling when you give it gas hoping it will spin up and don't. I agree, with the kick satin foot print as well as some of the other mods, the 12 volt plug in should definitely come from the factory with that. Thanks for sharing and I hope you have a blessed week my friend. Keep up the great videos.
@ColoradoDualSport8 жыл бұрын
Thank you brother! I have to admit that at first I didn't like the silver. However, after a few months of ownership it has grown on me and I now love it, especially with the luggage attached. Yes, I think that would be a great improvement that TT could make to their setup. As for the ram mount it doesn't fit my note 4 either, but without the two top pegs installed I can slide it down in without much hassle, so it works and is still very secure. Your auto correct issue on the kick stand is so spot on! Haha! It was satin, but has since been brought into the light! Thanks again man.

Awesome! I am still torn to either go for the 1190 R because of the release of the 1090 R will help drop the price. My only gripe is that the money you save on the Twin is the amount of upgrading you need to do if you want to do serious offroading. But I Love the simplicity of everything of the bike and just enough power. But the 1190 R is seducing me :P Got a video similar to this for the 1190 R? Again awesome points you made!
@ColoradoDualSport8 жыл бұрын
That is a tough choice. The KTM is hands down the better choice if you will primarily be riding gnarly off-road. On the other hand the AT does highway better, but is still very capable off-road. In my case I chose the versatility since I know I'll be doing lots of touring and still want to get dirty after I'm there or on the way. Then you have the vstrom which is more light duty off-road etc. Think it over and be honest with yourself. 500lbs is a lot to handle and we're all not Chris Burch. Haha

It would hold up just fine, but there are better options out there for light duty dual sports. You might be happier with the Vstrom honestly. It's much more geared to street. However, the AT would do it and would be a lot of fun.

Off the wall question... What helmet do you use? Do you wear glasses? I just picked up a used WR250R and I wear glasses. I'm having a bit of a time finding a helmet that accommodates the ear pieces.
@ColoradoDualSport8 жыл бұрын
I started off with the AFX FX39 and it was awesome for the price. I now use the Icon Variant, which is considered the caddilac of dual sport helmets and I love it. I loved both as a matter of fact, but the Icon is much quieter and better designed for wind. However, with that comes the price. Yes I do wear glasses and it does suck having to take them off and put them back on every time I put on my helmet. However, if you've worn glasses for any amount of time it's second nature. I used both helmets with the SMH10 and now the Icon with the 20S from Sena. The speakers fit perfectly and there is plenty of cable routing options.
@ThomasMeeks8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. Interesting, I've got both those helmets on my list but noted next to the Icon Variant that it was not good with glasses based solely on what I'm finding online in forums etc. The only helmet I've been able to try in person and get my glasses on with is a Fox MX helmet, but then I'd need goggles to go over the glasses. (I'm just starting my hunt as well) Like you said, taking the glasses off and on is second nature so I don't care about that. I'll have to find a shop around here that carries the Icon and try it out. Thanks again!
@ColoradoDualSport8 жыл бұрын
One thing to note about the Icon. The cheek pads need about half of the padding removed. You'll notice it gives you perma duck face until you do the mod. Hermit did mine and I'm sure he'd tell you how to do it easily. Yeah, no issues with my glasses at all. Plenty of room.
@ThomasMeeks8 жыл бұрын
Yes, good point. I've read that about a few, it may have even been the Icon. I'm getting the particulars on some of them confused now that I've been getting lost in the research. Supposedly the Arai XD4 is the top of the line but they didn't have my size to try on at CycleGear this weekend. I spoke to the guy I bought my bike from this evening and he said that Arai XD4 is his favorite. It all sounds good but I was really NOT planning to spend $600 on a helmet! That's a quarter of the cost of my used WR. I'm going to try and find an Icon locally to try on and will go from there.

ChaoticDetour Long Way Round! That's for people with film crews. Mondo Enduro would be s more authentic reference. No Jedi's.

when are you taking this down to everide so we can see how this does with a drz400? haha I'm trying to decide if I want a drz or the AT and it's killing me!
@ColoradoDualSport7 жыл бұрын
Well that is a HUGE gap in bike lol. What type of riding do you want to do? That will help answer the question much more easily.
@yessure52916 жыл бұрын
Did you rule out the Alt Rider crash bar combo and the Alt Rider skid pan?
@Nicoya8 жыл бұрын
Turning off the TC and rear ABS is definitely the way to ride off-road. I know on BMWs you can just flip to Enduro riding mode and forget about it, but on bikes like the Tiger or the Africa Twin and a few others they always reset the TC/ABS modes every time you switch off the bike which is baffling to me.
@ColoradoDualSport8 жыл бұрын
I wish they would issue a firmware update LOL! I would literally pay for it.
@texnorthman8 жыл бұрын
Can't say that level 1 ever caused me any issues when I tested one off road - but level 3 stopped me mid hill-climb once! And that was because the bike reset to level 3 after I turned it around with the engine off...

Any time! Plate has to come off, but removal is easy and quick. You don't have to take the bracket off.

Question. do you think a 225 lbs. guy can use the kickstand to mount the bike? as in stand on the left peg and putting your weight on the the side stand to swing a leg over?
@Ron_Boy7 жыл бұрын
Very nice review. Thanks for pulling it together. One suggestion for future reviews... Wearing a helmet makes for noisy, distracting sound.
@ColoradoDualSport7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ron! Actually wearing the helmet killed almost all of the wind nose standing on top of that mountain. Unfortunately I can't afford a private sound crew, so I do the best I can work what I have. Haha!

willatmiami I'm also trying to decide whether to buy a 2017 at a discount or wait for a 2018. Dealer told me this week May 27 for 2018 in Arkansas.
@willatmiami6 жыл бұрын
Johnny I’m 5’7 and I saw it in person I’m too short lol so I got a brand new 2015 nc700x for a discounted price but the AT looked fierce and if I was taller I would just get the 2018 over the 2017 unless money was a issue

Hey, how is the brake dive on the pavement? I've heard it's pretty bad on this bike.
@ColoradoDualSport8 жыл бұрын
It's about as bad as any of the light weight dual sports I've ridden. I don't have any issues with it, but it may take someone coming from a street bike by surprise. Any bike with long travel suspension is going to have a bit of dive. That's just the nature of the beast.

hey is that the DCT version of the africa twin?
@OperationFoxley194418 жыл бұрын
There should have been a drive shaft option!
@ColoradoDualSport8 жыл бұрын
Why? That would be awful for off-road.
@OperationFoxley194418 жыл бұрын
I'm such a lazy tyke, and chains totally suck In the UK, we have salt on the roads in the winter time it corrodes and eats through bike chains. The Yamaha tenere 1200 uses a drive shaft and also the VFR X1200. The Africa twin is a great bike don't get me wrong but when I buy a bike I think about reliability and ease of maintenance.
@philclarke77128 жыл бұрын
It wasn't a 700 or a 650. 750 I believe and the 600 (originally) Transalp was a parallel twin not a V like the Africa Twin. This machine probably has more engineering DNA from the Transalp but, hey, marketing right? Sorry for geeking out.
@droptuned838 жыл бұрын
Phil Clarke , no the Transalp was always a v twin. this thing has zero dna from the translap. Sorry.

I have 1200GS Adventure! when they say heavy bike I laugh :-) after my GS all bikes are light haha, the GS adventure is 30kg heavier then the African Twin. Love my GS but after suffering a knee issue became to hard to handle i'm 5,11ft not bad with the lower seat, but with a bad knee i started to feel the weight.
