Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM)
Learn what differentiate AGM from other lead acid battery types
AGM technology became popular in the early 1980s as a sealed lead acid battery for military aircraft, vehicles and UPS to reduce weight and improve reliability. The sulfuric acid is absorbed by a very fine fiberglass mat, making the battery spill-proof. This enables shipment without hazardous material restrictions. The plates can be made flat to resemble a standard flooded lead acid pack in a rectangular case; they can also be wound into a cylindrical cell.
AGM has very low internal resistance, is capable to deliver high currents on demand and offers a relatively long service life, even when deep cycled.
AGM is MAINTENANCE FREE, provides good electrical reliability and is lighter than the flooded lead acid type.
While regular lead acid batteries need a topping charge every six months to prevent the buildup of sulfation, AGM batteries are less prone to sulfation and can sit in storage for longer before a charge becomes necessary.
The battery stands up well to low temperatures and has a low self-discharge.
The leading advantages of AGM are a charge that is up to 5 times faster than the flooded version, and the ability to deep cycle.
AGM offers a depth-of-discharge of 80 percent; the flooded, on the other hand, is specified at 50 percent DoD to attain the same cycle life.
The negatives are slightly lower specific energy and higher manufacturing costs than the flooded, but cheaper than the gel battery.

That is a brilliant video and demonstrates just how straightforward it is to change the stop start battery for as little as £50!!! If You had taken that to Land Rover, they would have charged at least £400 with their batteries retailing at £220 plus at least £180 an hour labour charges! You can bet they would have charged for at least one hour as a main dealer!! 👍👍

I have a 2016 range rover 3litre diesel and i have looked in trunk. There is main battery under spare wheel the right hand side compartment no aux battery. There is the space for it but no battery. Could it be that some vehicles dont have it?

Just about to replace the Stop Start on my 2014 L405 Autobiography 3.0TD. I managed to get an Exide EK151 battery for £55 delivered which has the same lugs. Do I need to do anything with the computer, I am confident swapping the battery, but am concerned it will give me error codes or cause some other issues.

The issue I am running into with all of the videos that show the Intelligent Start-Stop battery is the location if it. I have looked on either side of the boot and the only thing we have found is a fuse box. So, then we looked under the glove compartment (as referenced in another video). Nope, not there either. We looked under the hood and only found the main battery. So, in a 2016 Range Rover Evoque HSE Dynamic, where is this Start-Stop battery?!

Did you forget to attach the vent hose? Or was there not a place for it on the replacement battery?

Its a AGM battery type which has no vent hoses - new batteries there is no vent hose. You can tell by turning them upside down to see if anything comes out - besides WHY Jaguar Landrover decided to place this battery laying down I will never know - if its going to leak - it sure will over everything - tried to postion it in the upright position but no joy

How do you know that it is the start stop battery giving the problem and not the main battery? Also when replacing this battery, Do you have to save the memory and Re register the battery to the battery management software?

Because after diagnosing the problem - 1) the car was driven for 60 miles prior to being parked overnight - the main battery ( after sitting overnight - battery read 13.4V ) - The Stop Start battery voltage read - 12.4 volts - which basically meant it was dead. ( I did try & charge the small Stop Start battery with a Ctek battery charger and would not hold a charge. Ever since I replaced the Stop Start battery as VT - the problem has gone. Its been fixed now for over a year,

THE BLACK HOSE - was put in by the factory, - AS THIS STOP START Battery is a AGM there is NO breather outlet - Its a fully sealed battery - the reason why you have to use a FULLY SEALED battery is that the battery lies on its side. I CANNOT UNDERSTAND why the LR design team decided to put a battery on its side - lying on its side can lead to all sorts of problems - there was enough room in the design for the battery to stand vertically up ! YOU MUST NOT ever use a Lead Acid battery here - A lead Acid battery needs a air breather - hence the black tube. That said because its a Stop Start system a Lead Acid is not up to the job - so who put a black breather tube in there when the battery is SEALED completely god know ? Now this is IMPORTANT - what ever you do DISABLE the Stop Start function on your car. WHY oh WHY would you need to get the engine Stop Start at junctions ect - Its well known that Stop Start USES 20% MORE FUEL just restarting the engine than if it was ticking over - ALSO the amount of damage done to that Engine lack of oil and not to mention THE POOR STARTER Motor doing overtime !!!! May be its one of those things - " what the hell the garages want more work ....... Can you imagine the garage telling you - sorry but your starter motor is worn out, you eed a new one - enough said. The Stop Start Function CAN BE TURNED OFF using a Diagnostic tool like a Snap On Legend. in a nutsheel - the black tube is a breather tube - BUT the batteries you use are SEALED there's NO breather outlet ! Hope this answers your question. .
