I rescued one once a few years back, tangled up in fishing line. It gripped my finger like a vice, but otherwise just sat there for about 10 mins whilst i unwound the line. It wasn't even in a rush to fly away afterwards, just sat on my hand until it was ready and off it went.

When I was a child of about eight, a little own tumbled down our parlour chimney. We kept it in the outside wash house for several months and fed it on earthworms before releasing it. It finally alighted on a large tree, two doors down from our house, having come back to us momentarily, but we shooed it away again and never saw it thereafter. I live and was born in Burry Port, some fifteen miles west of Swansea, West Wales.

Until you actually see one, it’s difficult to comprehend just how small these tiny owls are! They are beautiful and although not indigenous, don’t really compete with our native owls. Love buzzards too! I see them every day and consider myself lucky to see them. Thank you 😊

Got little owls round our way (Sussex) as an outdoor man I’ve encountered them many times. Mainly because once it’s dark they don’t seem to believe that you can see them. I once had to stop the car as there was a Little Owl in the middle of the road. I beeped the horn, and it just stared at me, so I automatically assumed “ oh ok you’re injured”. I open the car door…he sits….I get out of the car….he sits…..I walk towards him, and when I get about 8 feet away, suddenly he’s all “oh crap! He can see me!” and flies off completely fit and well! I’ve had similar experiences walking the dog at dusk….they’re great though, and I’m always pleased if I see any Owl.

Well they certainly have little owls in Yorkshire. I remember waking up under a dry stone wall one evening to find one little owl standing on my bike saddle and the other tucking in to the remains of my egg mayo sandwich. Things like this were always happening to me. A good way to see wildlife this. Simply go to sleep in the countryside and when you wake up BINGO! A surprise. Dry stone provides a perfect block of flats for these lovely creatures, apparently. Nice one Liam! 🌟👍

About 25 years ago I used to see Little Owls EVERY DAY travelling too and from work in Sussex, always just standing on fence posts at the side of the road. I was shocked to hear there are only 5000 odd in the UK. I'm going to do the same drive in the summer evenings to see if I see any and I'm PRAYING that I do! Such beautiful creatures, I could stop, wind my window down and talk to them and they'd just look at me with that CUTE angry expression 😠😄🥰

We have owls (likely tawny) hooting at the top of the road and I still haven't managed to see one. Other people have seen them at dusk in the trees but I've not been lucky yet- even walked past a tree and suddenly heard a loud HOOT, but was too dark to see! In other wildlife news I saw a black swan today, word of mouth people had been visiting to see it and I found one on a large lake near Chesterfield. Seemed to be only one so likely an escapee from Slimbridge apparently, as they are native to Australia! Really beautiful to see though, even if seems little chance it will be able to breed (maybe a good thing though as I read after they could out-compete our native swans in future if given the chance). Incredible footage here too btw!

We have Owl Service Pest Control. He sits up in the bamboo and watches out for mousies, one time I caught him at the pond's edge eyeing the gold fish, he did get one, but it was such a hassle hauling through the net he's gone back to strictly rodents, plenty and more easily available. I live in the Valencian countryside, Spain. we have loads of owls here! Small/little Owls as well as others, they seem to hunt around our house for about a month, calling to each other, sounds like the mewling of a cat! They move on only to return a few weeks later, as if they've hunted near us and cleared all food sources. They then return about 4-6weeks later.my neighbours I caught a pair of.them on a sat next to each other on a tree at sunset, on video, from a distance, one evening In October this year, 2023. I'm not sure if they are Little Owls though. I'm going to Try and post it on my KZbin channel, please take a look, let me know which type they are if you can! Enjoyed learning about them from your video. Thank you. 😘😘Chez in Lliria Valencia Spain

We have a lot of them inside the Bucharest , around buildings areas. Last evening i was trying to save a very small/young one dropped from nest (strong storm) and hunted by cats... but sadly he didn't make it :(, was unable to resist until in the morning when they can take it at an local wildlife foundation (visulluanei). Last year i manage to save one which was hunted by crows and cats, but even if was yound and unable to fly more than 3meters, definitely was bigger than last one which weighting about 30grams and was big as a paper cofee cup..

Question When breading season approaches, the male will begin to do fake mating attempts. he will mount the female, look her down and end the process by biting one side of her face. Is it to strengthen their bond or is that a dominant display by the male?
@AShotOfWildlife
@AShotOfWildlife Жыл бұрын
I dont know the answer to this question, but from the description it sounds like a bond forming thing rather than dominance. In birds that pair up (rather than those with multiple mates) there isnt usually too much of a difference in dominance between the adults.
@ayuadabu-roomisantana2765
@ayuadabu-roomisantana2765 Жыл бұрын
@@AShotOfWildlife thank you for the reply, and frankly, if it was dominance, that would only make things more confusing since many experts and zookeepers witnessed female owls and hawks killing males when they get agitated (obviously because they can't escape in a cage)
