Don't coat unnecessarily. That's the reason problems exist against women. What will you say to "Men always smoking from the subway to cafe, to streets, to office cafes" - this covers all classes now! If there is carelessness at this degree to other's situation forget harassment and eve teasing across Europe or the current meToo in Spain.

As a Korean, I can add to her point: Leggings are relatively new here and often viewed as underwear. It's rare to see them worn on the street without an additional layer, like a skirt or a long shirt. However, gyms and hiking trails are exceptions; women, and even men at the gym, often wear them without cover. Some, especially the older generation, would see them as improper for public wear, but that's much like seeing PJs on the street, rather than regarding them as "sexual". As for the news article she mentioned? Given the many underqualified journalists in Korea, it's best to dismiss such nonsensical articles and subjects.

As for compliments, in formal contexts (e.g. workplaces) it's usually inappropriate to comment on someone's appearance. Descriptors like "fat," "skinny," and "short" are taboo. Even compliments like "handsome" or "beautiful" are often avoided, though "tall" is acceptable for men. "fit" and "gorgeous" are generally safe. However, in informal settings or when talking to someone who obviously wants to let it show and wouldn't take compliments offensively, terms like "beautiful" and "handsome" become more acceptable. We also have preference for indirect compliments, such as "You look neat," "You look way younger than you are," or "Your skin is radiant." More subtly, one might say, "That outfit wouldn't have been as great on anyone else," or humorously, "Your life must be full of fun and joy."

Even in Italy leggings are not well seen. You are considered ridiculous and vulgar and people laugh at you. In fact it is very rare to see women in leggings and that's it, it's something reserved for gyms. In the country of fashion, leggings are absolutely out! 👎 And we also judge and comment a lot on people's physical appearance, also for this reason Italians are always on a diet (and Italian women are the thinnest in Europe along with French women) and are obsessed with fashion, no one wants to be pointed out as ugly, fat, untidy or poorly dressed.

I don't know if I've ever HEARD someone say in those words that Brazilian women are easy, but definitely Brazilians are stereotyped to be sexually more open because they're not afraid to dance and show off their figures. In my country, dancing is traditionally thought to be an activity for sex workers or at least for "easy" people. When my mom and stepdad met, my stepdad was so proud to be one of the open-minded guys who will "let" his partner go dancing, whereas my mom was like, dancing? Me? Of course not! And then, of course, they went dancing together and have been dancing every since.

The truth is that the majority of Brazilians HATE very strongly the exteriotype of "sexual nation" that others impose on us. We are not sexual at all, not like you think. Another problem is to emphasize that the media outside, in Carnival always film the naked women and not the floats and costumes... They cut out a small part and show it as a whole and what's worse, they generalize the behavior of an entire nation with 200 million people. inhabitants with a snapshot of a small part of an event that lasts only 3 days in an entire year. The bad exteriotype is always for Brazilian women, because no one says anything about Japanese women and the dick festival, or French women and topless...

Acho que o esteriótipo em relação as brasileiras é mais com os homens estrangeiros e não com as mulheres estrangeiras. These other woman are in bits but when it comes to Brazil it gets a smirk like it is about going to a 'place' like Amsterdam or Bangkok. Also in Italy. There is an urban legend that many Brazilian transsexuals are so attractive and feminine that in many cases it is really difficult to distinguish them from real women. Is there a very high chance of an attempted pickpocket or is it just something to be mindful of but only some people actually experience it? I think pickpocketing is really a thing in Italy and in Spain, but only in big cities like Rome or Barcelona. In fact it is well known in italy that thing with pregnant women. Years ago there have been news about Sinti and Roma clans in Rome, where women either stunned their little babies, that they don't cry or had fake baby bumps and bump it to you. In Spain it's often that one person (the shill) is asking for direction, bumping into or in Barcelona especially they sell roses and grab your attention, while the accomplice is robbing you slicing your pockets or just pickpocketing. In Barcelona it happened to my parents with the roses. But they only stole a free travel guide from the jacket. 😂

The Brazilian stereotype about checking if the woman is a woman is also transphobic. About Brazilians being easy is actually "our" fault. Back in the 1950's (or around that), our tourism industry (and from the Government, I need to point this) focused on sexual tourism in our propaganda around the world, so whenever you saw a Brazilian ad in a newspaper or magazines, you saw an ass wearing bikini or women in carnival costumes. Unfortunately, we built this kind of image for so many years that's been hard to change it.

I do not know if the girls here are just that naive or the chanel has to be politically correct or just conform to the korean culture (i guess thats where the production is?) but the stereotype about brasilian girls being checked for being men is because there has been a good amount of trans girls, at least in italy, that came here and ended up sadly doing prostitution. That happened when being trans in italy was still very niche (it still is but something is moving) and that warped the immaginary. Another crazy idea is that people here are afraid of pregnant women. lol I do not know if outside the country people think italian women are pickpocketers but as other have already said the connotation of italian pregnant women comes from romani poor women (in italy, usally not etnically italian) that go to metro stations to rob mainly tourists but also locals. They are usually women, pregnant, with kids or disabilities because these quality can give good chances of not being put to jail. Go look the videos of ATTENZIONE PICKPOCKETS to check by yourself

The Italian girl, however, didn't say that the (fake) "pregnant" women are of a specific (non-Italian) ethnicity; it's not nice to say and will sound racist, but that's the reality. This doesn't mean who there are no Italian scammers/pickpockets (are of all ethnicities, unfortunately), just they don't "work" this way; so tourists should be careful, especially at railway stations in big cities like Rome and Milan, not because are particularly dangerous situations but because could ruin your trip/holiday (it's a very annoying situation if your passport/id card is stolen).

I do listen to Anitta’s songs and she also collaborated with an Italian artist called Fred De Palma and I don’t see her sexualising herself in the music videos actually quite the contrary. Anitta is not super famous here in Italy, people know her only through Fred De Palma and those who have listened to his songs liked her. I don’t know if they know she is Brazilian because she sings in Italian so it is hard to tell where she is from. We have Eletta Lamborghini who also sexualises herself a lot in her videos, it is kind of normal for us we don’t get shocked and we know that in the music field some women do it so we don’t stereotype an entire country female population because of a singer.

I have empathy for Shallen and the point she was making about being a pre-med student. She has a way of speaking where her pitch sometimes goes up at the end of a statement. It's really meant to be a way of trying to stimulate the conversation and signify that you are open to hearing differing opinions, but it sometimes gets misconstrued as the person raising their voice, is questioning whether the statement they just made is accurate. So, people that do that get labelled as "dumb" for a behavior that is actually sort of pleasant and endearing, which is just additional evidence that the world isn't perfect.

I think what you are referring to what is called uptalk. Oftentimes when people’s pitch goes up at the end of a declarative sentence then it’s a matter of their accent. I grew up in SoCal and we are well known for doing this. I don’t think Shallen’s is as pronounced as many SoCal people. When I went into a broadcasting news career I had to learn to lower my pitch when on air because it gave me more of an authoritative sound. Over time I learned to flip the switch to my “news voice”. My friend recently pointed out that when I speak Spanish my vocal pitch is higher. I told her it’s likely because when I work I don’t generally speak Spanish so I think subconsciously I feel more free to speak Spanish at my naturally inclined vocal pitch.

I have actually heard some Canadian men on KZbin talking about their impressions of France and one of the things they spoke of was women oftentimes not wearing skirts or shorts because of the high amount of street harassment. When I was Italy and Spain I was repeatedly warned about pickpockets but the negative comments about who the pickpockets were went beyond women but specifically gypsies. They talked a lot of crap about them. Blondes are stereotyped as dumb in the USA to where we say we had “a blonde moment” if we say something stupid. I think there is a stereotype in the USA that Brazilian women are beautiful and easy but I don’t think it’s necessarily about the every day Brazilian. I’m aware that Brazil is popular among men from 1st World Countries who engage in sex tourism because of their prostitution laws. The Dominican Republic and the Philippines are other places a lot of these men go.

As a French I confirm. Harassers are mostly immigrants, and especially arabs (excepted Maronites), other muslims, and blacks (from Africa, not blacks from Caraïbes). Most women in Parisian region are afraid to go out with short skirts or short shorts because of that, but it is also true in other areas.

@@marty8895I am recounting what some people said to me and the specific word that they used was gypsies. Not Romani. As I indicated the people I spoke with were talking crap about gypsies and I refuse to sugarcoat what was said to me by substituting a more PC term. Also while some of these conversations were in English and others were not. There are words in other languages that translate in English as gypsy. So are they all be slurs in your view?Based on my experiences I don’t think that’s always the case. Context matters. Since you brought up the n-word I will tell you the Spanish translation of this is negro/a. Am I offended when someone refers to me as negra? Not necessarily because this also means black and I’m black and also call myself as negra. But if someone is going off on me and calls me a “pinche negra” then the translation is different and I’d be pissed off. Capiche?

@@anndeecosita3586 They used the word gypsies because in English you call them like that basically all the time, you don’t call them Romani😅 In the USA you racially profile Romani people so don’t act like you are nice towards them and that this is just an European problem. I have Romani friends and the word gypsies is the same in basically every European language and it is always a slur for them. Moreover I can have conversations in five European languages I should know better. Capisci??

The problem is finding something you are not! Or assuming you want to sleep with someone just because you smiled and said "good morning." It's a bit disgusting the malicious smiles that appear especially on the lips of old men when you're a woman and say you're Brazilian, as well as embarrassing... In addition to more extreme cases, with sitting and attempted kisses by force... Do you go to another country for tourism, leisure or work and people ask you if you are a prostitute? It's something absurd what happens to some Brazilian and Latin women abroad, you can be fully dressed and with a very heavy coat and there will be some animal that will harass you just for hearing where you come from.

I would say it's a bit the same thing as with professional athletes. It's very rare that you hear a professional footballer being called smart or having an interresting personality. They have one thing that does a lot of work for them, so they don't have to work so hard themselves. With that said, that is obviously not the case for everyone, some pro footballers work their asses of on something else, just as some beautiful women and men do the same.

Sorry for my English, cuz I'm not a native speaker, but here I go Oh, pretty women suffer so much in this world, much more than anyone else. Poor beautiful women. Yeah, I'm being sarcastic. Big whoop if people say you're dumb because you're pretty. There are a lot of beautiful women around the world who have proved it wrong. An ugly woman or an ugly man usually can't beat the hate comments about their looks, and that affects them in many aspects whether at school, at work, or in life. I got bullied during my school life because I have a big nose. This completely destroyed my self-esteem. If I were beautiful and someone dared to call me dumb, I'd know it was only because people were jealous of my appearance. I know there are some stereotypes about beautiful people in general, but ugly people suffer much, much more.
