In this episode of book club we're looking at the best selling book Think Like A Monk by @Jay Shettywhich looks at how we can learn to overcome negative thoughts and habits, and access the purpose that lies within us by learning to think more like monks. In the video, we look at the three key areas that Jay identifies as key to this process - Letting Go, Growing and Giving - and why, in our hectic modern world, it is more important than ever to find ways of managing our thoughts to reduce stress, improve focus, and offer our service to the world.

@@user-ip4hh2oe2e His Genius course starts at $40 per month/$390 a year though? And clearly unemployed people aren't the target audience for a $1000 course? When has he tried to specifically target a poor/unemployed person to buy his course? The target audience for it is of course more middle/upper class. Otherwise, most his content is free to watch on KZbin...or you can buy his book for £12. You can't hate on him for making a living and selling a course that's priced at a pretty average rate for that industry.

Fact : monk may be a person who decides to dedicate his life to serving all other living beings, or to be an ascetic who voluntarily chooses to leave mainstream society and live his or her life in prayer and contemplation. The concept is ancient and can be seen in many religions and in philosophy.

Well, this book clarifies us a lot .When you think like a monk you’ll understand .How to prevent overthinking, How to overcome fear, how to overcome negativity, how to learn from each and every person you meet, why compassion and gentleness is vital to success and much more. I haven't bought one yet, because most of his Deep Dives are really helpful to me so far, but if/when I have the $$, I'd definitely purchase access to a course if it's in the field of something I'd like. I got this book recently. Can't say I was impressed or blown away by any means. It boils down to a compilation of *mostly* good advice you can find in "positive thinking" yt videos or websites. An OK read, but nothing to write home about...

Agree, there's a lot of material out there on the subject, but not everyone can present it in a way, that brings the point home. We're al at different levels of spirituality... 🙂

Excellent summary Ali! I loved the parallels you drew to stoicism. I would love to know your process of summarizing books - is there a video where you share that? I did a summary video of this book as well on my channel, I ended up making 15 min and 19 min videos summarizing parts 1 and 2 of the book! Found it so hard to NOT include the gems I found in the book. And I also feel I barely scratched the surface! PS: Love how you asked Jay for a collab! Would be super cool to see you both together.

The last part of your summary (giving through service) might explain I've come to dislike working from home all the time during this pandemic. I just feel so disconnected from other human beings that I used to casually interact with in the hallways, cafeteria and breakrooms. I used to confidently say "I am a valuable part of a team" or "I work with great people" but not anymore. I never really cared about the products of the company and profit margins; I just wanted to make stuff that helps others achieve their goals, whether it was presentations, documents or programs. Like you, I probably enjoy recieving appreciation and admiration. I didn't get much of that from my peers before leaving for college. As much as I am privileged to not be as financially impacted as others, I can't say the same about the emotional/motivational impact. I was already trying to recover from major depressive disorder when social distancing mesures propped up. I don't think I can truly recover and get back to our usual 9 to 5 under these conditions.

Personally, I've always preferred the Japanese concept of Ikigai compared to Dharma. Ikigai is a combination of - What you're good or skilled at - What you love or are passionate about - What you can be paid for - What the world needs I think that when you combine those 4 aspects together, you get a life's purpose worth pursuing.

That passion and skill part got me thinking and I can't focus on your video after you mention it. If everyone is doing this advice, I doubt no one would be working cleaning the streets, server burger, doing accounting, work in factories, etc. People do their jobs most of the time cos they needed the money, to keep the money hungry capitalist machine working and there's nothing wrong with that! People should be proud that they're feeding their family or being independent.

May I ask a question related to the system that Jay has developed? Passion+Experties+Usefullness I have a strong desire to help others and be useful. And also, I have some skills. If I don't, I am a good learner, but the main problem is I don't know what I love, and I don't have a passion for anything I've known. Sometimes I am not even sure I know who I really am. Is there any idea for exploring without being drained?

@Ali Abdaal Great video. Genuine critique though, I don’t know if this is only happening to me, but when I watch your (more recent) videos, my eyes tend to face more distraction and get annoyed trying to focus at everything. I think this is because of two things: One, during the writing scenes, the time-lapses are a bit strangely cut, so it’s not just faster but faster with jump cuts in between. This makes the eye a bit confused and makes me genuinely want to look away towards my wall because there’s less sporadic motion. Secondly, I think the background of your videos has a bit too much clutter right now. Try changing the aperture of your camera so that the shot is more focused on your rather than your beautiful lights and plants. PLEASE don’t take this the wrong way, I love your videos so much but I’m giving this personal criticism only because I want to keep watching your videos and I would find MORE enjoyment through these tips. Thank you so much (if you read!)
