I have had the game crash a few times, on the ps1 system, ps2 system and the ps3 digital version. Specifically the game can crash during loading screens which is just the worst, which, yeah, kinda sucks but yeah, there are quite a few bugs and exploits though.

It is Silent Hill 1 tbf, the game is filled with so much healing and ammo even hard mode is pretty simple overall, so missing 10 healing items in a row does not really matter that much when there are another 50 on the way.

Man, I love Harry as a protagonist. He just has a good motive for doing this crap. Find daughter. Boom, a dad is going to do some shit to rescue his loved one. He's also kind of dumb and slow and awkward, but in an endearing way. And although he's probably a grieving widower he doesn't really have the same kind of dark psychological history of the later Silent Hill protagonists. He's just a guy looking of her daughter. He's got a dead wife, but he's dealing with it.

I love it too; Harry is such an awkward everyman, it's great! Contrary to most survival horror protagonists, he doesn't come out of this like a stone cold, super-cop, John McClane caliber badass. He's just some guy looking for his kid in a nightmare town, running into all these weirdos, and whatever crazy bullshit they're on he just has to take their word for it.

Honestly, the "parent looking for their child"plots are so generic and boring. I mean, even Resident Evil jumped unto that bandwagon. It's the most overused motive in recent fiction and just really easy and lazy storytelling.

When I was young my family had a BAD RELATIONSHIP with my father. He was a military man and came from a military background and expected us to be just like him and "fall in line" and when we didn't he belittled and abused us. And I'm not ashamed to say that at the time I HATED him and felt he hated us just as much. Then I rented this game and sat down to play it. And KEPT playing it. I was in awe, here was a father willing to go through ANYTHING, willing to literally go through HELL for his daughter. To me, Harry was more of a hero than ANY of those stupid comic book characters. To me he was the ideal father figure and I imagined having a dad like him. It was because of this game and this character that I eventually later in life was willing to give my father a second chance to be the father he could be before he died.

We need more games willing to look like Megaman Legends, and I feel like the Indie strata is starting to push past the pixel art age into their own ps1/n64 age. I’m amazed that Woolie’s lack of experience and expertise in these kinds of games has led to him discovering a glitch that I’ve never seen before despite these games being my childhood. I'm enjoying this, I hope you check out Silent Hill 2 and 3. The texture work and level of detail is crazy in those two, probably the best looking PS2 games imo, if you like this aesthetic, you'll love those. Just, if you do plan on playing SH2 on an actual PS2, try and get the greatest hits version, the lighting is way better in that one.
