As an owner of a manual 2005 997 Carrera, I would highly recommend trying one. I bought mine in 2020 and love driving it on the weekends. The base Carrera has plenty of power for the street and back roads.

Hi, i am considering buying a used convertible 2007 997.1 C2S manual, however, i am a little concerned about the IMS issues. Have you experienced anything like that? Your advice shall be highly appreciated.
@johnshuff953
@johnshuff953 9 ай бұрын
@@philly1002 Mine had the IMS replaced by a Porsche dealership as a result of the recall from the lawsuit. That said, I only put a few thousand miles a year on mine and have the oil changed annually. I’m thinking about getting an IMS solution installed as a permanent fix. Watch the Flat Six Innovations channel for things to be aware of on 996 and 997.1 cars. The IMS doesn’t concern me as much as bore scoring. I think the key to avoiding bore scoring is getting a southern car that’s been properly warmed up before giving it a rip. That said, Lee from 9Werks posted a video a week or two ago about his 140K mile 996.1 that’s got no sign of bore scoring.

I have a 03 996 with 188k miles on it. No records of IMS work and I drive it hard daily. When I change the oil, I cut the filter and pull the element open to check for any small metal particles. Been clean with 3-5k between yearly changes. The cat converters are far more prone to failing at age/miles and $$ to fix.

Good to see you publishing again. I look forward to the reviews. I think good you clarified again you are into the cars to experience and not collect which is a good distinction. I think maybe some were confused when you went through so many air cooled when the channel had morphed into "air cooled Porsche fans". Look forward to your continued journey with an update on the mid year story and the Spyder which I didn't know you had snuck into your stable.

Been the following the channel for a minute. Great that you’re enjoying so many P car models. My wife and I have been enjoying our manual trans, 991.1 C2S for awhile now. At some point, will absolutely add an air cooled headache to the fleet lol. Some very great points in the video, and absolutely best of luck finding any 991 Carrera S with 3 pedals. Very interesting what you said about mastering the trans in the 991.2. I feel like these 991 gen are super inviting and incredibly easy to drive. The factory shifter has a beautiful feel haha. However, feeling like one with this trans easily took me a year though!

Great vid, Will, and I'm with you, I think the 911 lends itself to buy/sell fairly often, they hold their value very well and you get to experience so much. Maybe one day you'll find your forever 911, maybe not but the hunt is so much fun. I'm currently looking for a 991.2 T model, I think the base motor with a manual and sport suspension is an ideal back roads 911. I have an air cooled now and while it's great, the no AC and harsh ride get tiresome after a few hours, hell, my wife won't even ride in it. LOL

Have you ever driven a 991.1 Carrera S and does it feel the same? I had a 2007 Carrera S Manual and wanted a 991, I test drove a 991.1 which is quite different from the 991.2 engine wise. The 991.1 felt too easy to drive it was vague coming from a 997 which felt more aggressive peppy and better steering feel than the 991.1 with more power, much more comfortable and felt bigger and less sporty.

I enjoyed your “rambling review”….I actually felt like I was riding along with you! (Of course, gorgeous car, gorgeous countryside. My brother, retired Army, lives in Fayetteville…..while me, retired Navy….remains here in New England). I’m in my late 60s…the year I was promoted to O6, coincided with the year I turned 50. I always admired the 944s2 cabriolet….with wife’s permission (kind of)….I started the search. Living in Rhode Island, i held my search for east coast cars, and after three that I considered, and turned down after I paid for a PPI, I finally found a low mileage Baltic Blue cab, in Tampa Florida. A Marine Corps LtCOL worked with me….successful PPI, full documentation, car had less than 40k on the clock. I still own it, drive it sparingly….but it has done the Tail or the Dragon, and down the east coast…the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Kancamangus in the Whites. Now, just a hair over 60k on her…I’m fully retired from the Navy AND a follow on career in federal law enforcement --both at times stressful and challenging careers--I’m thinking “now or never…it is 911 time! I’m still working out the 997.1 or .2, 991…turbo or not…..row gears or go PDK….how many miles am I willing to accept….etc etc etc. I guess that part of the fun. I’ve had offers for the 944 in low 20s….so maybe….just maybe. Anyway, thanks for the ride along…..Bravo-Zulu, well done with this video….very well done, sir!

I recently drove a 992 Turbo S at Barber and I'm with you. It's too much power for any kind of daily use. And when it goes into boost, your spatial awareness better be laser focused. The first thing I tell people with any turbo car, even a GTI, is find out where it goes into boost. That's why I prefer Carrera 2S for it's more playful behavior. Turn the TC off at an autocross and look like Chris Harris. I'm glad I found and subbed to this channel.

Will, Let me chime in as well, as an owner of a 2005 997.1 Carrera S don't bother with the straight up Carrera, pay a few dollars more for the S, I just recently bought the S with LN Engineering 4.0 Liter update due to Bore Scoring, they also did the IMS, RMS, Water Pump, Coils Packs, Clutch, Bilstein B8's with the K&R lowering springs night and day over the Carrera! I only paid 60k 50k miles, beautiful Atlas Gray Metallic and it is now a daily with old school feel!!! In my opinion it seems like more and more 911 owners have rediscovered the 997.1 Gen, maybe as some say the last of the classic Porsche's....But I also own an 89 C4 964 in like new condition and that IMHO is the last Classics. You are right about more people chasing the price, get it sooner rather then later.

Great video, I had a 991.2 T manual and the first thing I would do is turn the knob to sport not just for the noise and rev match, but so it turns off the auto start/stop function - that does not belong in a 911. Thankfully that water pump is on the extended warranty and even after the warranty period, the pump is very accessible from underneath. 997.2 would be a great pick up, but another under the radar option that I suspect will be in much higher demand shortly is a Cayman R - a manual car of the same era with 330hp and about 300lbs. lighter than the 997.2. My 992 T manual just landed in the US and if you are still interested, you're welcome to review it after I get PPF.

Yes, I drive it everyday and often hard, so "gas price" is something to add in to expences, but in my perspective, u dont buy a "new" Porsche to look at gas prices.. I have owned about every model of 911 over 35 years…. yes a lot of 911’s in my past from 930’s on up. The 991.2 is THE best modern 911 you can buy. It’s built quality and design is much nicer than my 992 that I sold my 992 after a few months and sought after a highly optioned unique 901.2 model. It oozes more quality than the 992 with all the performance and modern features you could ever want in a 911. The low end torque of the 991.2 over the 991.1 is noticeably stronger and pulls from very low rpm’s all the way up. It’s a outstanding driver for the roads and weekend track events. The 991.2 C2S is actually faster than my older 996 Turbo S via my draggy. Also build quality of all my 996 and 997 were abysmal compared to a 991.1 and light years behind a 991.2. I FYI water pumps were a known issue starting with the 996/997 all the way to today. They are much better with the 991/992 but worth keeping a eye on. Other than that the 991.2 is bullet proof.

Hey Will. There’s something about owning something for a real long time. The memories, the patina, the genuine understanding of what drives oneself. I first saw your channel and you were into BMW’s. Then you bought the 993, then the g body, then 964, then cayman, now modern 911. I’m not hating, just challenging respectfully. I can’t feel the energy here. The power of a brand is inversely proportional to its scope. We all love Porsche, but which one do you feel so passionately about, that you could never live without, won’t flip? Big love, E

Thanks for taking a moment to comment. So I think first of all, I want to point out that we all enjoy this hobby differently. Some people are wired up to keep a car for 20 years while some are more energized by the hunt, the acquisition, the experience of driving and of ownership then by moving on to the next one. Neither side is right or wrong, it’s just that we as humans are different and have different preferences. I have a psychology background and based on everything I’ve learned working on human systems this is simply a fact. Secondly, I don’t “flip” cars, at least in the sense of the word that most people think of when they think “flipper.” I don’t buy these cars with a profit motive. I am fortunate enough to have alternative income streams and I don’t rely on selling my cars for profit. If I’m honest, I am likely way in the negative $-wise after all of the cars I’ve owned. But that’s not the point for me. I’m a car guy. I love driving them, detailing them, looking at them and the relationships that are built around them. To answer your question, I would like to say I’ll always have a 993 in my garage. But then again, I have learned never to say “always” and mention a car in the same sentence. 😄 Thanks for watching!

Yes, GREAT question and while I was editing this video I realized I should have elaborated on that point. If I keep driving at this rate I’ll have to live with some depreciation which will hurt my ability to get my money back out. I don’t think I can make money on this car, nor do I really care to. As I shared, I don’t buy and sell these cars for profit. It’s a hobby for me. That said - and this has happened before - once I got done shooting and editing this video I am asking myself if I’m really ready to sell it lol. Hope that makes sense 👍🏼

IMO all the modern 911s have become common/interchangeable. Makes you wonder why someone sells with no miles. Not the experience they wanted. Meanwhile, the air cooled cars were hand made and special to this day. That’s why they continue to appreciate while modern depreciation is alive and well.
@Rennthusiast
@Rennthusiast 10 ай бұрын
I used to feel that way but each generation of water cooled starts to make sense once you really drive and notice the subtleties. What I mean is that you can see the iterations between each much like you can see the progress from the long hood to the 993. I’ve driven the 996, 997.1, 997.2, 991.2 and the mid engine 981’s. They all can be appreciated. My Porsche journey truly started with air cooled…but over time has morphed into wanting to drive and own different generations to appreciate the dynamics and experiences. Air cooled will always be at my core though for all of the reasons I’ve shared in my videos. As far as your thoughts on air cooled, I agree.

The 991.2 is almost the same as a current 992. Other than the placement of the air filters behind the wheel wells, there isn't much difference. Also, the strakes on the front hood. The turbo lag is not appreciable in my opinion, and the car will pull easily from 2,000 rpm. I can't get behind all this focus on maintenance, especially coming from someone who doesn't keep a car more than a couple of years. Why would you put new tires on a car you're going to sell? I don’t mind the online haters, it comes with the territory. The issues have come from some of the online haters who have spread offline. The behaviors some in my local community have been engaged in toward me (online character assassination, having me thrown out of rallies, sabotaging my recent BaT auction, etc), have made me take a step back and evaluate what I want out of this channel and frankly the role I want to play in this community. One guy in particular who plans rallies and is fairly well known in the Carolinas has been throwing fits over a rally I held in the spring. He derives income from his rallies and he’s super threatened when anyone hosts drives that might compete with his. Really a poor, poor reflection on the Porsche community as a whole. I have been tempted to share all of this in a video but I have chosen not to use my content that way. Regardless I am back to publishing and am just going to focus on what brings me (and hopefully viewers) joy.

@@RennthusiastSad to hear this. Have to think it’s an anomaly as most in the Porsche business are very welcoming. Keep doing your thing and don’t take the negatives personally, in fact don’t even give them the time for a response. Been trading 911’s my entire career and rarely run into a competitor that’s not welcoming or willing to do business. 997.2 coupe 6 speeds are the most demanded 911 requested. The .1’s in my opinion have a better exhaust note in the upper rpm range and are the better value. With proper service history the M97 engines can go well above 200k miles before major work is needed. I think the 997’s will be the next 993. Get a ton of clients trading back to 997’s out of 991’s. My interpretation of a flipper is someone who finds deals on perhaps less-than-stellar examples, dresses them up to appear to be strong and sells them at a strong profit. That’s not me. I actually tend to lose just a bit due to taxes and updating the maintenance. I don’t pass along a problem car to the next guy bc: 1. I just don’t screw people over - it’s poor form. 2. Problem with the lovely driving 991.2 Carreras, is the 3.0T motor grenadine on themselves when the oil return seals fail, drowning the turbos which is the lowest point of the engine design, with motor oil. The turbos chew through the oil laying down an aircraft carrier size smoke screen blowing all this unburnt oil out through the catalysts ruining both turbos and catalysts needing a 20000k USD repair for new oil return seals, turbos and catalysts. I sold my lovely 2018 Carrera T at 30000km, hearing the new owner had the engine malfunction at 55000km some years later. At every track day I’ve attended over the last 6 yrs, 1-2-3 3.0T cars have failed each time, GTS cars the most common. I’m just waiting for 992 Carreras to do the same.
