It depends where you live in France. I bought a small townhome in a small town near Poitiers, and the cost of living is extremely reasonable. I could literally live off my social security check alone. I would use my savings for travel or hitting Paris once a month or so. But I don’t have to spend a lot on day to day stuff-there’s a weekly market all year long for fresh veg, fruit, and fish, steak and ready made foods. I can shop for staples and conveniences at an upscale supermarket complex with electronics and home goods all under the same roof (LeClerc), and my monthly house expenses are about 250 Euro/month, not including food. It helps to speak French and be sure to live near a train station!

No plans to move to France as I retired to my forever home on a pond on Cape Cod (originally from Manhattan). I still find it interesting to know all the details that you offered in today's videos. I am especially happy for you that you have bank account that will make your life easier and your wallet a little fuller. I studied french in HS and college and still listen to french CD's from the library although I don't have any need for it. I was in Provence this summer and never needed to use my french since everyone spoke english. I was looking forward to seeing how well I could communicate. Of course, I could have tried anyway but was too shy. From the little I know and can read, there are many lovely subtleties in another language that cannot be truly translated. I find Pimsleur is the very best in learning CD's. As for coffee, I drink my ground decaf black/no sugar and I have used the same Melitta ceramic pour over filter cup for decades. Weather here is the same as yours, but being in the country means lots of fallen leaves. My gardener already took 3 trailer full of leaves and we probably have another 4 or 5 more! Have a good week!

A pleasure to see and hear more about your days and various experiences. I moved to Paris in 1982 and lived there for two years, then Brussels for a year., while studying fine hand bookbinding. I had a long-stay visa, renewable each year. Three wonderful years before I returned to the States to create an academic graduate book arts program at the U of Alabama! Huge change after France. 😊😊😊😊😊 I have to emphadize one thing - make the serious effort to learn French! You can expand your experiences dramatically and develop friendships with many locals. I had 2 years of high school French, but no useful speaking skills. I took a 9-week language intensive at UC Santa Cruz the summeer before I went to France, which helped me push past the afraid-to-try stage and it made such a difference. I watched French films with no subtitles, read French books, listened to French music and did not spend much time with English speakers during those weeks OR when living in Paris. I immersed myself in French life in as many ways as I could, learned practical conversational French and asked people to correct my errors, which natives are always happy to do. And for those who wanted to practice their English, we traded lessons in language for cooking and sight seeing. Now I am 76, live in the U.S. and my French is as fluent as it was at 35, and I keep it up every chance I get - the same ways I learned it - by practical methods, friendships and shared interests. Hope this comment is useful! A bientôt...

Oh wow!! I bought my townhome in a town called Montmorillon, known as “la cite de l’Ecrit” - city of books and book arts (a former center of paper and printing during the late Middle Ages thru the late 19th/early 20th Century). Your back story is very interesting. I completely agree about learning some French. Do your best to speak and understand the language as it will be much easier for you and everyone.

Quick question about renting an apartment...I read that landlords require your monthly income to be at least 3x the monthly rent, preferably 4x or more. For example, if the rent is EUR 1500, then you need to show at least EUR 4500 monthly income. Does this sound accurate to you?

I’d like to add a comment to the woman seeking to go to film school in France (La Fémis?) if you’re trying to go to school in Paris, French schools of higher education don’t have the support system we expect in the US. There are no dorms, for one thing. There are landlords in the practice of renting to students, but that type of housing is very minimal & unsuitable for raising a child. A friend lived in Paris for a year while taking a post-graduate course. She & her daughter stayed with my French in-laws in Paris for a few months until she found a market rate 2 BR apt. It’s expensive & you will need enough money to support the 2 of you coming in on a monthly basis, just as you would in the US. Janice is right: You will need to document a good cash flow for the visa. The French public school system is very good, even for non-French speaking kids, so that’s a plus, although you will want to consult with someone knowledgeable about where to live to get an excellent school. Good luck!
