I wish that Apple had introduced USB C earlier and not stuck to Lightning for way too many years. I have an iPad Air 2 and a 7th gen iPad, both of which are stuck with being limited to stuff like XDisplay, which is really not very fast at all. It would be nice to have a second screen and a webcam at my disposal, but then again I probably don't want to use an iPad as a second monitor long-term due to the negative impact it would have on the battery. My iPad Air 2 battery doesn't last very long because I used it as an external monitor for several months in a row, leaving it plugged in all the time with the screen on.

I have an ipad 5th 12.9 and I have used the recomended adaptors and it working. I have used it with the HTML based you have prepared and also with FaceTime. However I have some questions as the workflow is not smooth. A) How can the lag can be improved with the HTML file? Is there any adaptor that can help the data transmission to be higher? Also, is there any setting on Windows (i.e. changing the Hz on the refresh rate) may be improved? Also how can it be full screen? B) Facetime: how can I get rid of the sidebar with the recent calls? Also the Facetime app is flipped and mirrored. How this can be changed to watch items on the screen not in a mirror situation? Thank you!

thanks a lot for the very useful video, the very useful article on your website and the very useful html page(s) to display the "webcam" ! I think I am going to use one of your html pages to display the "webcam" ... I used genki studio app on my iPad mini but now it shows grey stripes at the top and the bottom ... also I think the aspect ratio was not the best (I think it does 4/3 but not 16/10 which would have been better) ... but the good thing is that it has the "fullscreen feature" that hides any useless "decoration" ... ideally I am looking for an app which does "stretch to fullscreen" that will use all my iPad screen to display the webcam (there are some on android like "next camera - usb" or "noir pro - uvc" ) but I haven't found any yet on iPad so I am wondering : has anybody found an iPad "webcam" display app that has the "stretch to fullscreen" feature ?? thanks again !

Can the resolution be improved? Normally my iPad Pro has better resolution, but this time, the laptop has better resolution. Also, if i am playing a video, i lose the audio when i connect the laptop to the ipad. Can this be fixed? Thanks in advance

Thank you for this video, Apple seems so far behind sometimes. I have both a Samsung S9 Ultra and an Ipad Pro 11. All the way back to my Samsung Tablet s3 I simply press Windows +K and I second screen instantly, no cables. Seems very tedious to carry all of these adapters when I can just press two buttons to get the same display on my Samsung.

I just checked the link in the US Amazon store and it shows availability. Not sure which store you are using but I'm sorry it isn't available for you. There are other brands that look almost exactly like the one I list that others have bought and I think have had a good experience with them (it is likely that many of the ones that look the same are actually manufactured by the same factory). Select one that looks the same and you should have success.

As other replies indicate, newer Mac laptops and newer iPads have the ability to connect wirelessly. If you have an older laptop the method in this video will work. You can also connect the TV as a third screen. You will likely have to use an adapter too get another HDMI output from the laptop USB-A port. Here's one I recommend: amzn.to/3NveVS9

The older Lightning port does not support the video features so it is only possible for USB-C iPads. Apple makes that clear in their documentation.

any idea how I can do something like this with a hand me down iPad 3rd Gen running iOS 9.3.5? can't download any usable apps because of apples horrible planned obsolescence...and my new apple id was locked before I was able to do anything with it. so as a result I've got this very nice but useless tablet laying around I'd like to use it as a monitor for my PC so I can use it as a drawing tablet..

The technique shown in the video only works for newer iPads that can be upgraded to iPadOS 17. I don't have a solution for older iPads.

Thanks for the information but it did not work with my iPad Pro 10.5 (Model 1701) - possibly becuse it has a Lightning Connector, not a USB-C Port. Since I have an HDMI port on my laptop, (HP Pavilion x-360 purchased in 2023), I did not need the USB-C to HDMI converter so I used an HDMI cable into Guermok A/V Capture card (one you recommended), then into a USB-C (female) to Lightning (male) adapter then into my iPad. Your routine on the iPad to open the webcam camera worked, but would not recognoze the A/V input source. On my laptop, I could not get "Screen 1 / Screen 2" to appear in "settings" either. Thank You

If your iPad has a Lightning connector this method won't work. The Lightning port does not support an external webcam.

When I open the file in a browser on my iPad I see just Camera 1 listed when i drop the list down. When I select it and tap Show camera, the iPad asks if I want to give permission to access the camera. Once I allow that the drop down list populates with all of the attached cameras. Hope that helps.

My advice would be to restart the iPad and try one of the apps to display the webcam if you have been using my web method. Apple can change things without notice so sometimes restarting everything is required. Hope that helps.

It definitely does work. I use a similar method almost daily, only difference is I use an app on my iPad Pro called Camo Studio to display the feed from my capture card. I would suggest verifying that you have the newest version of iPadOS(17 or above). Then test the peripheral components for proper function. For example, to verify if the USB video capture device is working you would plug the USB capture device into a known working USB port on your computer. Get a known working device that outputs hdmi such as a game console, firestick/chromcast/roku, or a different computer. Next, using a known working HDMI cable connect your output device of choice to the HDMI input of the video capture device (if using streaming stick with a built-in HDMI male connector, You can plug it directly into the capture card). Now open up any application on your laptop that uses a WebCam, find the setting to switch camera and look for the name of your USB video capture device and select it. You should now see whatever your test device is outputting on screen.

Yes, it will work for a desktop Windows PC as well. The challenge may be that the desktop is already using the HDMI port for a monitor. In that case you can use an adapter to create an HDMI port from a USB port (I have a link to this in the article at www.thinkoutsidetheslide.com/use-an-ipad-as-a-second-screen-for-a-laptop/. If you are asking whether the iPad can be used as the primary display for a desktop, I don't see why it wouldn't work but I have not tested it to confirm.

He might over complicated this. You only really need the VIDEO CAPTURE (no hdmi dongle) and you could buy the one that is already USB-C. It is great that he provided an browser, but just download and app. HDMI monitor Orion is the one I’m using (free and pay options)
