Suntan, here shown in the specific variety Winter Wonder, is a triploid, and amongst its characteristics is a self-thinning tendency to a certain degree. The ideal situation is for groups of apples to have no more than 2 fruits each. Three apples per group are too much in any variety. If shoot growth is good, and leaf quality is good, free from pests and diseases, the tree will crop at an optimum level as in this 4/5 year old tree. A good stake is important particularly for dwarfing rootstocks such as EMLA 9 which creates trees that require good support. Narration by Dan Neuteboom, camera by John Paddy.
