Easy to follow steps with a great final result. Cowls were always my weak point as well. Now I'm looking forward to setting up my next one

Great tips. I've had planes in the past without cowls from messing up. This looks so easy, I feel better about getting into large gas planes.

You are the man. I just used your technique and it came out flawless. I had to ad-lib a bit since I have a single cylinder, but the same principles still applied. A SHARP Dremel bit and 220 grit sandpaper gives it a factory finish. I did have to refit the cowl a few times and cut some more, but nothing crazy.

Disregard my previous question.... I went back to your webpage and read it fully instead of skimming and what you know there was my answer... Thanks for taking the time to produce these videos... They have been helpful to me in taking on my first gasser project.

Good deal. I tried and tried but the plug wires do have to be off without really cutting the cowl up. When taking the cowl off or putting it on I sort of hang the plug wires on the engine or something behind the plugs where I can get to them with a needlenose pliers.

Excellent system, Tom. Just be sure to mask up when cutting fiberglass. I see you have the fan blowing out of the garage but thise glass shards can still get into yiur respiratory system and eyes not to mention making your skin itch. I am guilty of underpritecting as the next guy but worth the wird of caution.

I'm in the process of building my Valiant with a DLE 40 also and I'm having difficulty installing the cowl after plug holes have been cut out. Do you install the cowl with the plug wires installed or connect them afterwards? I managed to connect them afterwards but nearly cracked the cowling trying to remove the caps again. If there is a trick/method for removing the cowl with the plug caps still on I would love to hear it. I'd hate to crack my cowl by stretching it too far. I enjoy your videos and have included 2 other items in my Valiant build because of your reviews on your channel / web page. First is a Smart-Fly PowerExpander Pro for power redundancy & distribution. Second is the Quik Fire Fuel Balancer/Filter. I haven't fired the engine up yet so I can't comment on how well the Quik Fire works but I trust that it won't hurt based on your recommendations.

I just got my Hangar 9 Valiant 30cc and the videos you published helped me to choose this plane. I have a question about air flow inside de cowl: I didn't see a large area for the hot air to escape. Did you have any problem with that?
@flyingrcdotnet3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for writing. I "over cut" the exhaust opening by roughly 1/2" around the muffler stacks and that seemed to be enough for my situation as I never had a heat issue. When in doubt make the openings a tad bigger and keep track of the engine temperature to see if you need to enlarge those openings or create another to help draw airflow out of the cowl.

I see the Packer shirt at the end of your videos. Are you from Wisconsin? I myself live in dodge county Wisconsin. Where is your local flying field? I'm interested in going around seeing other fields as my clubs field isn't the greatest but being close is convenient. I've seen Fond du lac flying field for their warbirds over the Midwest. What a nice rc airplane and jet show that was.

Very NICE !! You can improve cutting finish, using electric wire cover ... strip off the wire color you want, doing a very straight cut ... then place the wire cover as cut's covers .... I hope the tip will be useful and you may have understood what I tried to describe .... kkkk

I am lost. I don;t have a clue what you are talking about here. A hot wire cutter?
@petyahawk8 жыл бұрын
Sorry . My poor english does not help . See the pictures i made for you . flic.kr/s/aHskJzHEkm The intent of this type of finish is to avoid small cracks in the edges in the future. just do the whole around . Hope you enjoy .

Same as cutting holes for the plug wires. Works great but you have to decide how big the hioles need to be for you.

What dremel bit did you use for the cutting?
@flyingrcdotnet4 жыл бұрын
I use a drill-like bit for the basic cuts, then a small drum sander bit for finishing the openings. Before you get too worked up there is a reason I don;t show my cowl openings too closely. But they fly just fine.
