WARNING SURROUNDING DEVICE ENCRYPTION: As someone who works in computer repair, I need to express how important it is to also have periodic backups for your data if you enable encryption. With the exception of data-recovery specialists, most computer repair shops CAN NOT access your drives which are encrypted if the system is either dead or if the OS is too corrupt to allow encryption removal from the Windows Recovery tool and If Bitlocker is enabled and you don't have the key, you may as well kiss your data goodbye.

Just a quick note on your last point sometimes not updating immediately is the smartest thing you can do. Some updates or patches can break another. The other reason to possibly hold off is there might be a undiscovered problem that might require another patch to fix why update to a vulnerable patch when the one you currently has is just fine? Your best bet is to wait a week or two to see if anyone discovered any issues with it and if not then do the update.
@autisticgirlawareness74202 жыл бұрын
I wait until I’m fiorced to update once my computer or phone start going too slow or buggy then I know it’s update time sometimes Apple will purposely force you to update when you don’t want to but you’ll eventually have to do it anyways.
@TheHouseOfWaffles Жыл бұрын
With Windows 7 I actually took the time to look up details on each individual update package before installing it, and then I would allow only one package to install at a time so that I could easily verify which, if any, update screwed things up and roll it back. The unfortunate downside to this was that installing updates 1 at a time instead of say 10 at a time slowed down the "check for updates" process such that it started taking several hours just to determine which updates were available. I figure it must have been slowly analyzing each update log.

@@playa124us that's just not true. And sorry, but that's still pretty ignorant as a parent. I mean, I'm a capable adult, but for some reason, computer stuff just doesn't click for me. Just like parents should teach their children how to cook, how to clean the house, and even do the taxes so that when children leave the house, they have a solid foundation to stand on. And teaching children simple tech stuff will help the parents in the long run. Not every 'child' is a lazy so-and-so. However, my Dad can't tell his screwdriver bit from another. We both bought the same storage cabinet. I put it up within an hour and he did it like 3 times and spent the day putting it together. I just gave him some simple tips on how to put these storage cabinets together for the next time instead of telling him to just "google it".

Once you have an SSD as the boot drive, I recommend disabling fast startup. The difference in boot times is just a few seconds and it saves the the potential problems fast startup causes. Regarding your last point: I was relaxing on a weekend away, but had my laptop with me for an online event. Unfortunately, Windows decided to update the moment I booted it up, offering me no chance to delay that update. Fortunately, I booted in time for the 2.5 hour update procedure to finish, just in time for me to get into the online event, but it would be much more helpful if Windows told us how large an update is and how long it takes to install. I've already had updates fail for lack of space (why didn't the system check if there was sufficient space first?)
@declan_youtube2 жыл бұрын
How (at least in my experience) Windows schedules its updates is during inactive times (like 2:00 am), then it will prompt you for an update and after a few unaccepted prompts it will just update. As for why didn't Windows check if there was enough space, There are multiple factors that would make this difficult. The size of the drive Windows is stored in, the other files in that drive. I'm not saying that it'd be impossible, but not really worth it due to the fact not many people would have use to know how large an update is

Hey Joe, for some issues it would be nice if you focus a bit more on the actual solution in stead of the issue. For example: 1) How or where do I enable/disable Fast Start-up? 3) How do I add common [keyboard] shortcuts to an app or a file? (I know the answer, but would be nice if *you* mentioned it) 5) I would suggest to check the settings of the specific app first. You can also use the Windows Settings, instead of Task Manager.
@cunerex Жыл бұрын
on the "5th" one i think you meant third, for some reason most people get bugs in the settings like the startup apps tab not showing in settings which happened to me and in task manager it just wouldn't show any apps that i know they are running in startup
