I think PE sounds kind of interesting to put in a VM, hosted by Linux. To run some odd applications, unavailable for Linux, but available as portable edition. Would be interesting to find a way to install apps on PE, not just deploy portable edition, as I have some apps requiring install. I guess I gave to stick with a full Win 10 for them.

In our company we use a small WindowsPE to install the normal Windows on a big amount of notebooks over time. WinPE gets deployed to the notebooks and it installs Windows, drivers and all necessary programs on its own. In our case it is just a few GB in size. It runs on a ramdisk and so it gets automatically removed after Windows is installed, as it isn't needed anyways.

Very well explained . This is one of those things that most people should know . You can add lots of software you can use to repair a dammaged system . I have used ( and still use ) this WinPE ( Windows Pocket edition ) for so many years I have forgot when I started . Hirens boot and Bart PE is all Win PE and there is despite the limitations from being a fully functional Os , lot's of security software and repair tools even investigation tools ( If your computer have being compromised ) you can install and run directly from the USB , DVD , Cd or what you choose to use . Really well explained. This is something all people who use a computer should know a little about . Also a boot media ( USB / DVD /CD whatever is best ) at least one should be in their tool box so they can repair their windows if needed . In my opinion I think that for most people it would be easier to just download a version of hirens boot that match their windows version and simply burn the ISO . Ready to use . Nothing to setup or install ect ect . And you can get it with already installed software as repair tools ect . For most people that option would make most sense and also most easy . Just download it and burn it and finish . BartPE is also very easy to use but here you do have to create your own version as with the windows tools . It is a bit easier and you do not need extra software to install software on the PE because BartPE already have this functionality out of the box . Also the user manuals are not that complicated and most users should be able to do it just by readig the manuals . Using the windows tools and then use another program to add content / versions ect to a winPE is a little complicated compare to use Hirens or Bart . Hirens do have manual way to set it all up just as Bart and you can create your own but is a bit more complicated than Bart . On the other hand there is already so many ready made versions out there that you can just find one with sofware / tools ect . Find a version you like , download the ISO and burn it . It can't be easier than that . Nice video and explained good so any with no knowledge can ( should be able to ) understand how to do . More people should know such things . Edit - I forgot to say that with BartPE you are using your own windows CD / DVD To create the winPE . It extract the win PE from your own media so you to only need download Bart itself . No need to download any winPE and inatall any software from microsoft to be able to do so because you have it already on your windows installation medias . So you wont be wasting those 5GB on install those software from Microsoft before you can download the winPE . Neither you waste space on your disk for the winPE files ect . You just put your windows installation media in your pc when you create your BartPE and it take the files from there . This is the biggest Plus / reason to Use BartPE .

My probably most useful rescue disk is MSDaRT (Diagnostic and Recovery Toolset), which is actually MS-official. It has a TON of stuff in it, runs on Windows PE and, although it has everything from the normal Windows advanced boot, it also has new things, such as File explorer and a program that RESETS any password, even if it's easy to do without it. It should be paid software, but... you know... everything can be cracked these days. Simply search "How to install MSDaRT 10" and you'll be good to go. This thing saved me really too many times, you have to check it out. The fact that it's official is even cooler.

@DaemonForce3 жыл бұрын
Mostly yes and some minutia no. Windows ADK is a necessary nuisance in this era and it shows with each iteration. In my day the only ways to acquire this were through a Microsoft license as an OEM System Builder or extracting WinPE from Windows Setup. The issues with advanced software and WinPE are a little complicated but primarily memory related. The early builds could be premastered to run on systems with very LOW memory but could only open a few programs like notepad and a browser simultaneously no matter how much memory is installed and up to 24 hours of runtime. These were all 32-bit builds and each flavor could still fit on a mini-CD if you were smart. Booting a copy of this without a ramdisk or write filter was a major nuisance but these days we don't have WinPE booting raw from a CDFS partition and a lot of early development into the file based write filter made other memory issues obsolete (like registry startup execution issues and whatever else guys like Sherpya and Pierre discovered). Since the typical target disk is now a flash drive with a few boot files and a single WIM package, you don't need to worry so much about packaging issues anymore. The inclusion of DISM has also made routine backups and images sane again. It's not just about adding in packages but running some elite commands. I still prefer the old i386 heirarchy when developing software but these days you don't really need to do anything outside of mounting the whole project locally, drag and drop files, load some preregistered hives, add the new entries, unload hives, commit changes and save the whole WIM. I've been a Preinstallation Specialist for the longest time, longer than any of this even existed and I don't even think about it anymore. To me, WinPE has been for setup and routine maintenance since Windows XP/2003 era but it didn't become genuinely important until Longhorn 4074 and it didn't become super important until I recognized issues with ReFS versions in Windows Server 2012 (not R2). 20 years ago I would say that a new WinPE is created for each Windows successor at the service pack level and recommend building and using the newest version only to experiment with software that requires these SPs. Now that Windows 10 is the gold standard, the only dependency is Windows 10 vs Server 2016/2019 check flags so build according to what is needed. I frequently use the AMD64 version of WinPE on these modern systems but it took a while for me to get there. Now you just need compatibility checks when loading any unsigned drivers but I haven't run into any problems. There are some touchscreens and network devices that depend solely on 64-bit Win10 drivers and I load these in before deploying Windows or pulling images from a remote share. Oddly, networking support is still one of the most important and temperamental components in WinPE. Make sure you have this covered for whatever system you need to prepare and you shouldn't have any problems, even on slates that can only connect over Wi-Fi. It's also important to keep a few runtime scripts handy for automatic deployment on systems that lack keyboards and mice. Ventoy looks fun, I'll have to try that later. The program you're using to Deploy Win10XPE is a product of Bootland from Nuno Brito. He's another smart guy from back in the nu2 days that went a different direction like I did with my commandline PE-Bolts, which you won't find anymore. The idea is close enough but WinBuilder allows you to toggle the features you want. This is why you press a big PLAY button to get this started. WinBuilder takes the necessary components to make the preferred boot environment and adds the beneficial packages through some very aggressive scripts that may or may not trigger antivirus flags. I shouldn't have to say this to people anymore but do not use drive letters when building these projects or you could risk wiping an entire partition. It's actually preferred to run this software on a technician computer instead of something you use daily but if you can't do that, just be sure to have the same kind of militant awareness that you would in any other project that pulls and writes data like the aria2 scripts to pull those adguard isos. If you run out of space or the app crashes, it will wipe the work directory upon exit, including every file at that directory level. I recommend you run it in a separate directory. Everything else is spot on. Thanks and have fun.

Nice explanation. What are some of the pre-made tools you referred to?

Hey thio Joe I have a suggestion. Try making a video about turning the Windows installation disk into a fully usable copy of Windows with Windows Explorer.

16:03 How do you get that start menu? I remember a video where you ran a powershell command for that but don't really remember it well.

That program doesn't work for me. It always says that there was an initialization issue because of missing or corrupt winpe components whenever I boot the WinPE media, no matter what I do it always happens. I tried following the original MS guide instead and it works perfectly fine. No idea what's happening there.

Are their an caveats about using this on an older machine using a Linux distro, just to have a short lived Windows environment to perform tasks that require a basic Windows set of tools for a short time? Also, could you suggests what features to add a novice might over look, that would be useful in that scenario? Thanks, I am a subscriber and appreciate your instructional videos versus the infomercial-type fakes.

USB drives are important. Microsoft does have cloud download for factory reset which is pretty good but I'm not sure if it is the perfect solution like USB boot is. Windows 10 is like 6 years old almost yet it still feels new.

is "Sergei Strelec nr1 WinPE" an alternative? ( I'm only just envisaging study the usefulness (to me) to learn all about WinPE and bootable usb-key. I'm woried to walk into malware territory).

The Win10XPE website says need to log in, they changed it but there is no way around it and I don't think there is a way to make any sort of login

I get error "'xcopy' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. ERROR: Unable to copy boot files: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Windows Preinstallation Environment\amd64\Media" to "C:\WinPE\media". Failed!"

in the old days computers booted first from the floppy drive then the hard drive in turn. then it was cd drive then the hard drive in turn all set in the boot menu. you could alter it so it booted from the hard drive first. so in saying that doesn't most computers start from the hard drive ? putting a thumb drive in the computer to boot from should mean you have to change the boot sequence to look for that first?? let me know please

Thank you for that - i'm not techy but having problems with UEFI, so I'm grateful. Now that I have WinPE on a USB can I uninstall the ADK?

My previous employer used Windows PE for server deployment and hardware testing running custom scripts. Instead of USBs it was downloaded and stored in RAM via PXE boot. My current employer we use HBCD for Windows password resets lol.

Great video. Would like to make an important question in my case concerning these dell computers that come with raid as an active drive controller (intel rst active) and not ahci. The problem is that whenever i try to boot into these machines in a winpe environment with the Strelec package if you know that, in order to reset the admin password if i cannot log into it or just backup the data of a user into an external hdd before reinstalling windows if the precedent os is damaged and cannot be repaired, the internal hdd-s or ssd-s of just the os directories into the drives are invisible. I click on “This PC” and there’s only my usb visible and nothing else. I made a search on the internet and it seems it has something to do with the intel rst driver that abstracts the hdd from the os. Please help me, what should i do in this case in order to be able managing the pc even when the pc is unbootable or just the admin password is not recognized.

In college I got an ISO of what I later found out was called "Bart's PE" (The source was just listed at Windows PE) that was a live ISO of Windows with bunch of programs and utilities, one was a tool that could reset "forgotten passwords", as a joke I went and disabled all the accounts on my friend's HDD at school (the computers had IDE hard drive caddies and each student had their own HDD they would put in the caddy on the PC they would use). He was freaking out and I was like relax, I can fix it...
