Same here. I'm extremely conservative in extensions and helper objects that I'll allow and none were on the list, nor have I had any unexpected or untoward behavior in my finances or antisocial media accounts. The only unexpected activities I'm experiencing are, ahem, biological, as in health issues. All of which come down to some autoimmune issues and doctor neglecting to refill my beta blockers, causing my BP and pulse to dangerously escalate. As for managing any compromise via these, it depends upon your paranoia level. When I was with the DoD, we'd just go back to bare metal, then reimage the machine. For this, if one's comfortable having malware running at the browser level and is certain that the OS itself isn't compromised, one can remove the afflicted apps, purge their local stores in the browser cache and local extensions directories and move on, if uncertain, wipe and reload/reimage.

2 Questions: 1. If someone had one of these installed, but not enabled, could the malicious code still have been executed? 2. If someone has one of these installed, but hasn't opened Chrome since before the date of the hack (Christmas Eve), then opens Chrome as of today (assuming the malicious changes have been rolled back), is there anything to worry about?
@EIRE553 күн бұрын
Good question, although I don't use any of those extensions. However, I'm wondering whether I should go and uninstall then reinstall the few ones I do use. All the best to you and yours for 2025.
@PrincessSugarVT3 күн бұрын
1. if the extension has never been enabled once between installation and today, it could never have been executed. but you are better off changing your passwords anyways to make sure. 2. Just because someone discovers a hack, the doesnt mean it was created and spread on that day. some of this could have been around for months or years unnoticed.
@dvorakgigachad14443 күн бұрын
1. if you disable an installed extension, it lies completely dormant and is harmless. So assuming you've disabled it before the malicious update, and left it disabled while the malicious version was installed, you should be fine 2. yes, in that case the extension would update directly from the older safe version to the newest, fixed version and the malicious changes would never run in your browser. Just be extremely sure you never started chrome so those would be close calls. However it's probably smarter to just unistall the extensions, as the devs clearly can't keep them safe

@I.____.....__...__3 күн бұрын
It has nothing to do with being tech-savvy. Users did nothing wrong here. It was the TECH-SAVVY DEVELOPERS who were duped into getting their extensions infected and Google who forcibly auto-updated your extensions behind your back without permission or consent or a way to reverse to a previous version that caused it. Google is 100% at fault for their part, and as for devs, many of them _aren't_ tech-savvy these days, not when everybody and their dogs can do "computer programming" by clicking a couple of buttons to slightly modify demo-code and use frameworks and libraries to make stuff (it's why games are such unoptimized, bloated, demanding abominations now).

this can happen on firefox, infact there's a warning on newer extensions that they are not tested by Mozilla.
@Blue2x2x3 күн бұрын
@@Blooest It's possible, but depending on the hacker's view if putting a malicious code and make it work for 2.46% of all web browser users that uses Firefox is worth the effort or not, compare to 68.38% use still use chrome. It's similar to why Winodws get all the viruses, while Mac and Linux hardly get any. (Stats is from statcounter as the time of typing this)

I got this weird USPS message yesterday when I’ve NEVER used USPS ever, so it’s obviously a scam. But what I’m asking here is if that’s correlated with this at all

So in essence a cyber security firm worker fell for a phishing scam!!! ... Appreciate you posting this, especially the known extensions, I use Brave and try 'new stuff' in Windows sandbox for a while before using it in anger, which gives a little peace of mind! Get well soon fella!

Thanks for making the effort! You've mentioned Reader Mode twice, BTW... Get well soon!

I'm so glad I have a philosophy of "less is more". I have 2 extensions. One which is open source, and used passively. And another is to, on occasion when needed, browse through a proxy server (what people like to call as VPN extension). Neither were on that list.

Does it apply also to addons that are downloaded through firefox addon store? For example video download helper(I have that downloaded the way I said)
@KleyguerthКүн бұрын
Video DownloadHelper was not affected. "VidHelper - Video DownloadHelper" was the affected one. The one with RGB circles as their icon is fine, the one with a pink square is the affected one

I got my Facebook account hacked after Chrismas. It looks that the Reader Mode extension was the cause. Thanks!

Do these same extensions but running under Firefox have the same issue?
