The third goalkeeper role is the job you need in life

I think after watching the Netflix doc with Scott Carson it’s obvious why you keep a guy like that around (if you can afford it). He’s basically a mental health coach for the team. Brightens everyone’s day

And he’ll probably end up retiring at some point and becoming one of city’s goalkeeper coaches

Mostly signed on the cheap, in a role where they will hardly ever need to play, because you don't rotate keepers like you do other positions. Most on this list are English, or otherwise fit the homegrown criteria too. So for a top club who are usually playing in European cups each season, it makes perfect sense.
@aryanpugilist7 ай бұрын
Goalkeeper is the loneliest position to play. You really don't know the galf of what goalkeepers have to go through just to get a game. Being a 3rd choice isn't so bad considering the amount of keepers who struggle just to get a job.
@Mal_Freeman0451Ай бұрын
Meh .. In most games, a goalkeeper will be way more involved than a striker, especially in poor teams. The striker gets isolated while the goalie is regularly called into some form of action.

Raimond VanderGouw went from third choice to first choice in 1999-00 due to how bad Bosnich and Massiamo Tiabi was Also Fabien Barthez did find himself third choice in 2003-04 after Tim Howard was signed that summer and also behind Roy Carroll . Roy Carroll has spent quite a career not being quite first choice after leaving Wigan for Manchester United over 20 years ago and only retired recently. Stephen Bywater also had quite the nomadic back up keeper role and was never really first choice wherever he went. Peter Shilton was registered as a player with West Ham in 1996 putting him behind Ludek Miklosko and Neil Finn which was surprised considering that he was about 46 at the time, West Ham would later exchange him for Les Sealey I believe from Blackpool and Les was in his 40s by then !!!

Slight correction, Karius signed for Newcastle as second choice keeper after Dubravka joined Man U on loan, he only became third choice once the Dubravka loan was terminated. He also played the cup final because Pope was suspended and Dubravka was cup-tied.

Scott Carson was brilliant at Derby and should have had an other England call up. What I didn't like was that he took off his Champions' League runners up medal as soon as he was presented to him after playing zero games. Apart from that he is a great 'keeper.

In Spring 1990, Jim Leighton was Manchester Utd no.1 but then famously got dropped for the 1990 FA Cup final for Les Sealey by Alex Ferguson. A year later, he was on loan at Arsenal as their defacto number 3 keeper behind David Seaman and Alan Miller. He never played for Man Utd again

Wow.....what an interesting and informative video,thanks it goes to show 'looks can be deceiving'....3rd choice goalies chances of getting a start in a competitive match- they would still need to keep their fitness up....just in case- plus by staying around the club they can prove valuable by keeping the confidence up for any new signing that find themselves on the substitutes bench.....and also could easily find themselves as a goalkeeping coach (as their mindset would be invaluable) for short notice or as long term position! No shade.....but when I played at what was then amateur level, I reckon with little technical work I could have done a similar role myself, (I wish!) Hahaha!!😎🏆

I've always thought the 3rd choice GK should go to a lad from the academy. De Gea only got a chance at Atletico when GK 1 and 2 were injured. He then came in and did well and Atletico made £20m from him. Imagine they'd had a senior 3rd choice at the time?

Tony Coton was the best keeper never to play for England, and in my humble opinion is to this day the best English keeper since Peter Shilton. In the same way Clemence got the nod over Shilton in the 70s, for god knows what reason (other than Peter Swales was on the FA international committee and didn't want to pay Watford the 350 grand City would have owed them if Coton pulled on an England shirt) TC was never selected. Less error-prone than Seaman or Martyn, and an absolutely brilliant keeper. When he was at his peak in the early 90s, he and Schmeichel were the best keepers in Europe
@KEVIN-tx6bt20 күн бұрын
I'd agree with that. Also John Lukic and Paul Cooper should have been capped.
