@TCT By all means, elaborate or allow him to speak for himself, even though that isn't needed for this conversation. "This has “90’s” written all over it." is pretty self-explanatory. He is saying that this song depicts the 90s perfectly; it's written all over it (also known as a figure of speech). What's funny is that you're the one that can't follow along, and even worse, you thought it was a roast. Maybe I should have said "sounds/looks" to be 100% precise for your honorable. Then again, you're the same idiot that looked at his comment and felt like saying "Also crystal meth." By all means, continue your mission to think you're educating others on what the song is about. lol On the bright side, I'm the only idiot that even bothered to respond to you, so you're welcome. You got your chance to talk with someone. Speaking of being confidently wrong though...

The pure genius of this song still isn't fully appreciated: Every breakdown is different, different tones, instrumentation, dynamics, even what sounds like repetitive choruses have subtle nuances missed by most....none of this was accidental either. TEB's ability to play the same lick so many different ways is what really gives this song life. It's always familiar while always surprising.

Straight from what I found on Wikipedia: "Semi-Charmed Life" was written solely by frontman Stephan Jenkins. Jenkins intended to write a song that acted as a San Francisco response to Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side", with the "doo, doo, doot" chants present throughout the song being directly inspired by Reed's song. In regards to the style of the song, Jenkins explained that it is meant to reflect changes that were occurring in the San Francisco music scene, particularly a growing interest in hip-hop. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Jenkins said that the concept of the song was developed through his observations of friends using crystal meth at a Primus concert. The juxtaposition of the music and lyrical content was intentional, as Jenkins intended to illustrate the "bright, shiny feeling" one gets when using crystal meth. However, Jenkins maintains that the meaning of the song more broadly relates to changing periods in one's life. He further explained the meaning of the song: "It’s about living in the Lower Haight [in San Francisco] and all the machinations that were going on at a time where my friend group was finally out of the [educational] institutions that we’d been in our whole lives - because we’d all been in school since kindergarten and everybody now was in their early 20s and out of college. And then probably underneath that, also the weight of coming to terms with the kind of agony that your life is always about to change and never be reliable." - Stephen Jenkins. Jenkins was initially against the decision to release "Semi-Charmed Life" as the lead single from Third Eye Blind, as he did not believe that it was representative of the work as a whole. Guitarist Kevin Cadogan was concerned with the explicit lyrical content of the song, as he had fears that radio stations would refuse to play the song. Elektra Records suggested that the band release "Semi-Charmed Life" as their debut single as opposed to "Losing a Whole Year", then prompting the release of several radio edits of the song. Upon the song's success, Jenkins explained that he felt most listeners misinterpreted the song to simply be a "happy summertime jam".

I'm packed and I'm holding I'm smiling, she's living, she's golden She lives for me, says she lives for me Ovation, her own motivation She comes round and she goes down on me And I make you smile, like a drug for you Do ever what you wanna do, coming over you Keep on smiling, what we go through One stop to the rhythm that divides you And I speak to you like the chorus to the verse Chop another line like a coda with a curse Come on like a freak show takes the stage We give them the games we play, she said I want something else to get me through this Semi-charmed kinda life, baby, baby I want something else, I'm not listening when you say good-bye Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo Doo doo doo The sky was gold, it was rose I was taking sips of it through my nose And I wish I could get back there, someplace back there Smiling in the pictures you would take Doing crystal meth, will lift you up until you break It won't stop, I won't come down I keep stock with a tick-tock rhythm, a bump for the drop And then I bumped up, I took the hit that I was given Then I bumped again, then I bumped again I said How do I get back there to the place where I fell asleep inside you How do I get myself back to the place where you said I want something else to get me through this Semi-charmed kinda life, baby, baby I want something else, I'm not listening when you say good-bye I believe in the sand beneath my toes The beach gives a feeling, an earthy feeling I believe in the faith that grows And that four right chords can make me cry When I'm with you I feel like I could die And that would be alright, alright And when the plane came in, she said she was crashing The velvet it rips in the city, we tripped on the urge to feel alive Now I'm struggling to survive Those days you were wearing that velvet dress You're the priestess, I must confess Those little red panties they pass the test Slides up around the belly, face down on the mattress One And you hold me, and we are broken Still it's all that I wanna do, just a little now Feel myself, heading off the ground I'm scared, I'm not coming down No, no And I won't run for my life She's got her jaws now locked down in a smile But nothing is alright, alright And I want something else to get me through this life Baby, I want something else Not listening when you say Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo The sky was gold, it was rose I was taking sips of it through my nose And I wish I could get back there Someplace back there, in the place we used to start Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo I want something else

Lyrics I'm packed and I'm holding I'm smiling, she's living, she's golden She lives for me, says she lives for me Ovation, her own motivation She comes round and she goes down on me And I make you smile, like a drug for you Do ever what you wanna do, coming over you Keep on smiling, what we go through One stop to the rhythm that divides you And I speak to you like the chorus to the verse Chop another line like a coda with a curse Come on like a freak show takes the stage We give them the games we play, she said I want something else to get me through this Semi-charmed kinda life, baby, baby I want something else, I'm not listening when you say good-bye Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo Doo doo doo The sky was gold, it was rose I was taking sips of it through my nose And I wish I could get back there, someplace back there Smiling in the pictures you would take Doing crystal meth, will lift you up until you break It won't stop, I won't come down I keep stock with a tick-tock rhythm, a bump for the drop And then I bumped up, I took the hit that I was given Then I bumped again, then I bumped again I said How do I get back there to the place where I fell asleep inside you How do I get myself back to the place where you said I want something else to get me through this Semi-charmed kinda life, baby, baby I want something else, I'm not listening when you say good-bye I believe in the sand beneath my toes The beach gives a feeling, an earthy feeling I believe in the faith that grows And that four right chords can make me cry When I'm with you I feel like I could die And that would be alright, alright And when the plane came in, she said she was crashing The velvet it rips in the city, we tripped on the urge to feel alive Now I'm struggling to survive Those days you were wearing that velvet dress You're the priestess, I must confess Those little red panties they pass the test Slides up around the belly, face down on the mattress One And you hold me, and we are broken Still it's all that I wanna do, just a little now Feel myself, heading off the ground I'm scared, I'm not coming down No, no And I won't run for my life She's got her jaws now locked down in a smile But nothing is alright, alright And I want something else to get me through this life Baby, I want something else Not listening when you say Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo The sky was gold, it was rose I was taking sips of it through my nose And I wish I could get back there Someplace back there, in the place we used to start Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo I want something else

I remember being 9, sitting on my bedroom floor with my boombox waiting for this song to come on the radio so I could smash record and get it on my cassette tape. Obviously I had no concept of the meaning behind the words; all I knew was that this song made me feel an energy and happiness like never before. I'm now 36, I just saw these guys in Holmdel yesterday as part of their Summer Gods tour with the love of my life. Absolutely one of the best experiences I've ever had, it will go down as one of the happiest memories of my life. After all the shit I've been through the last 27 years, when those opening chords erupted on stage, it was like my soul was being put back into my body. Thank you, Third Eye Blind 🤟

@ahhwe-any74345 жыл бұрын
I mean, even in my late 30s, I never became some addict of wever. But I won't lie. I have dabbled in some things, that started in my early twenties. I thought most ppl have 🧐. ... like, you're prob lucky if you're not an addict. Bc I know damn well drug use is pretty damn high in the us. But in my late teens? I prob just picked up on context. But never, even to this day, bothered to look that in depth into it. Conveniently, I've never made meth a steady habit. Smoked & snorted it once. Smoking it was a way the better route. Bc the other way, had me up for f'n days & nights, hallucinating. But those were also my last time. 🤷🏻♀️ Not to redirect my bs, but it's kinda funny/sad/naive to hear certain kids talk about things now tho ... & I thought I gave ppl too much credit. .. drugs don't discriminate is all I hafta say. Like, I can't even taint them like that. But welcome to the real world... Good luck w/ that!!!

A lot of people keep saying this song is super upbeat to be talking about something so depressing, but it’s actually very very fitting for it to be “happy sounding” because when you’re on meth even if things are super shitty it’ll still feel fine and dandy and with the almost rapping for the verses are also fitting because people on meth tend to talk fast and have racing thoughts like this song is actually really fitting for the topic in my opinion lol

the fact that Disney put this as the trailer song for "Tigger's movie" without realizing it's a song about drug addiction is hilarious

This song never cease to draw a bright wide smile on my face! What a blast time we had. Few last years of 90's were best times to live. Early 2000 is equally fun... to hit the milennium with such a notch. A time dearly missed, oh the memories remain

I'd be honored if some 90s fans would take a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal YT performances of NEVER LET YOU GO by Third Eye Blind and 1979 by the Smashing Pumpkins in tribute to 2 of the most iconic bands of the mid/late 90s era. Live acoustic with no digital editing. Peace out & stay safe in the '020s.

Such a dark upbeat song as a kid in the 90's I listened to this but never really understood what it was about. Listening to it now it has another meaning.... drugs, wanting more than just to get by , I mean " And you hold me, and we're broken Still it's all that I wanna do, just a little now Feel myself, heading off the ground I'm scared, I'm not coming down" and "I won't run for my life She's got her jaws now, locked down in a smile But nothing is alright"
