I just finished this. Sort of late to the game here, but I have something to add that may be useful to some. I used the Fashion #3 and a size 1 steel hook. The first time I tried the join round and it worked, but was a real pain. The second one I made, I used the way you did joined it, with a small difference. Instead of chaining 3, I chained 5, picot, chain 1. That was an instruction from the joining round that made sense to me to keep the picot lace continue through out the piece. The hat does fit a bit snug, but crochet stretches over time and I wanted it to fit for years to come. This hat is truly a work of art! Thank you for all the wonderful patterns you find and share with us. It’s truly amazing and you are a gift ❤!

I'm a little late to this, but it occurred to me that you could use the larger hat you made as a decorative cover for any old plain knit cap (tobaggan). You could use different colors as a lining to coordinate with an outfit and it'd make it useful in cold weather

Corrina, I LOVE Irish crochet and this dainty little hat is simply gorgeous! Thank you so much for your excellent tutorial! As for the size - toss it in the washer. Even with cold water, the water & the motion pull the thread/stitches together to shrink it a tiny bit. Yes, I'm the irreverent one who "did up" my doilies by getting them wet, laying them face down on a thick towel & slowly ironing them dry! makes details pop!

I think the the join that you came up with might have changed the size... Not sure what the original join was but if you worked the last round while connecting the other squares it would turn out closer together. The size turned out great with the size 10 thread though. Beautiful job, soooo pretty! ❤

I made the cap using a crochet number 2. As it was fitting but too short I had to add some picots rounds so the result is slightly different - the flowers are smaller in size. However, it is fairly easy to achieve and very pretty. Thank you for introducing Irish crochet.

The way this is made is so interesting. I thought this was crochet from the top down until you made the flower. But it is just four granny squares. To me all those little pekoes actually look like rose vines and thorns. As for joining, I just thought, can't you join in the pieces while you are making the last bit (round 8) where when you are making the pekoes you just put them inside of the other pekoes for the top/other side of the hat. I might try this. But it might be awhile for me to come back to see if it will work.
@cynthiahowe8697 Жыл бұрын
Oh, almost forgot, the size 9 hook which is slightly larger than a size 10 was used on size 30 or 20 thread. So would a size 10.
@mariawhite7337 Жыл бұрын
@Cynthia Howe I'm in the process, I've got three squares. It's complicated? But I attached one side while doing the 9th row. Then for the 3rd flower after it attached it to the top flower i went through and attached the side, then since the hat bottom didn't have the 9th row I was able to go from the 8th row of the side flowers, then off, and onto the bottom of the hat. If that makes sense. 😅. There is some method to my madness I'm sure of it.
@mariawhite7337 Жыл бұрын
@Cynthia Howe also, I have to make more flowers since I am using a smaller needle and yarn. I've got five for thr band around the crown of the head. Then it should be four, then three. Sort of like a beanie. I should be able to make just the flower part and then stitch that to the top.

Yay! I've been wanting to find a pattern for a hat like this. When I was a teen in the 80s I remember wearing a hat like thiis but beaded. This cap is just beautiful!! I was able to follow the instructions as stated on the pattern. I also used #10 cotton crochet thread and a 2.0 mm hook. I have a very beautiful cap that will fit a child or an infant. I am not sure if just moving to #3 thread will be big enough, or use #3 thread and a larger hook. I am going to try both, as I think this is a really beautiful design.

I've done irish crochet, and by no means am I an expert. However, one of the ways I learned how to do a rose, is rather than splitting the stitch, make what would be a back post single crochet in the "spokes" of the first round, then do your chains, and work from there... Slip stitch at the end to join, and then work your petals... I hope that makes sense. 😊 Thank you for another lovely pattern. 🙏

Very pretty pattern. For the second and third set of petals on a Irish crochet rose, on the foundation row of single crochets and chain I always join to the post of the single crochet from 2 rows back. it's easier, for me. Hopefully you understand what I'm saying. Maybe you would find that easier too?

What an irony, I have been looking for a beanie made like this, with 4 ply/sports weight yarn, but jave not found any: they all call at least a DK cotton! And when I finally find one, a tutorial even, it is for no. 10 cotton! Well, I do have that, but I really want to use my one skein of variegated bamboo for a lacy sumner hat! Actually, learning how this hat is constructed, I think I cran fudge a lace beanie with sports weight yarn, using a different, smaller motif.

Maybe you might get a smaler outcome with a smaler hook. On camara it looks big, I don't have any expierence with American terms for yarn and needles, but as it looks, I would have used a 2.5 mm hook or even a 2 with the shown yarn. Love the pattern. It is so so great, that you take us with you on this journey or better on the journeys...hope for many, many to come

Hi, Corinna! Question for ya. When you attached the 4 side motifs to the top, I noticed you went in clockwise order... attaching one then the next one was to the right. Could you save some yarn tails by attaching the motifs in the other direction... so you never have to cut, at least when attaching all the way around the top? These motifs are SO pretty! Thanks for sharing the love with us! Hugs
