A million thank you's for taking us down the lane of memories Bill. Having owned a 76 Cartier and a 78 Bill Blass in the mid 1990's I can attest to the sheer joy it is to drive these behemoth beauties. As far as the patina goes, please keep her in the "driven" state to further add to her future story. There is not a single car made today to rival the fantastic styling and experience you get behind the wheel of a 70's Lincoln Continental. Cheers from Canada !

Challenger Hellcat Widebody? Product of Canada, Have you ever been experienced? My mother had a 76 LTD 4dr 400in3 2 bbl. It was a very fine car to party in and comfortable, good stealth factor. I drifted it through someone's wooden fence holding a Heineken. Didn't spill a drop. I remember driving past the next day and the guy was tearing down his remaining fence, he gave me a dirty look. Thanksgiving 1978. That car was a tank. I remember my Challenger falling off of 2 stacked cinder blocks trying to change the clutch in 10-deg weather. I was sure it hit the LTD which was brand new, Somehow there was no purple marks on the white Ford. And my dad didn't come out into the garage. I jacked each corner until I had a block under each tire, & then I did it again. Amazing that he even let me pull my car in the garage. His mistake, he should have made me do it out in the snow, I had energy back then, but I was a dumb 16yr old. with a $800 70 340 4 sp shaker plum crazy Challenger. Proof of god's existence. Car was in the Pennysaver 4 miles from my house and i had exactly $800.

I imported into the UK a 1975, 26,000 miles cream puff Mark IV in 2007. And what a luxo barge it was. Moondust Ginger paint. White leather interior with a brown shag pile carpet. Totally different driving style needed. Country lanes, overtaking and petrol stations where very hair raising 😂but at the car shows this car cleaned up. Never drove away without a cup or plaque. Just the most luxurious car. I live in Australia now and this would be the perfect car for ocean side driving. Thanks for the memories Bill.

I agree. Re-dye the armrest & get another door pull. Bill can put the original in a big ziplock bag & put it in the glove box so it stays with the car. The rest of the interior looks so flawless, I'd be fixated by it while driving. I had a 77 Mercury Grand Marquis Brougham with a 400 in that same dove gray color. The person who owned it before was meticulous about it's upkeep. I sold it because I couldn't afford to feed it anymore. She was a thirsty girl.

OMG, you missed the "Diamond Jubilee Edition"? I remember my cousin's wedding in 1978 and all the hoopla and unwarranted arrogance about that car that was loaned for the occasion by a relative. Beautiful car !!! A few corrections… the hoses you see surrounding and connecting near the master cylinder are part of the Hydroboast power steering. Nothing to do with antilock brakes. Also, these most certainly do NOT have rear leaf springs, but coil springs on each corner. And those styled wheels are cast polished aluminum. The center caps are chromed pot metal held on by I believe three screws if memory serves me right. Just a little FYI. VERY gorgeous car and great review as always. I echo what you said here that these were/are THE car to have. My favorite though is the 69-71 Mark llls. I’ve owned a 1970 Mark lll since 1985!!!! I intend on dying with it in my possession !!!! Thanks for making my night Bill

I was a 18 y.o. dude back in those days, livin' in the Rhine/Main area Germany, where the European Headquarters of the american forces had been located. A very few Connies drove around at this time, can't remember if they've been MKII, MKIII or MK IV but still remember how georgous they came pulling by, how fantastic this beasts sound. There where many american cars on our streets at this time, cougars, roadrunners, chargers, sting-rays, camaros and many more, GI's brought with them and were proudly ride them, Dollar was high in Germany und the gasprices for the soldiers even on low. Among all that kind of cars, no other could reach the great continental, no eldorado, no nothing. Thanks for bringing me back those memories, Mr.Bill, sir. Kindly regards from Germany, Hugo.

Drove my mom's 76 Carrier Mark in 1978 when I got out of the Navy. Hers had Vinyl Padded roof. Was Sable over Beige. Sable interior. The seats were of a different design than this example. Hers were much more plush and padded. All were electric. Had solid polished wheels each weighed almost 75lbs. Dead quiet inside and out.. Was fun to cruise the highways and visit the gas stations. Pain in the ass to wash polish and wax. Radio was a Ford factory but had cassette not 8 track. Auto temp control headlight dimmers. Apart from routine services sound machine. Ma and Pa kept for about 9 years. It was a special order and I've never seen that paint combo since. Hand laid pinstripe on the beige, sable parting line, option.

Cannon! ("Tell 'em the Fat Man sent 'ya!") Probably the reason I love Lincolns today. (Just bought a 2000 Town Car Cartier Edition!) I love the chrome and glass detail on the front turn signals. My 2000 has a similar cut crystal vibe to the rear brake lights. Beautiful cars!

Had one. It was three feet longer than my garage. Thankfully, a friend let me store it at his place. Super comfortable car that was surprisingly easy to drive. It wasn’t really all that difficult to parallel park either, so,long as the space was big enough. The trunk wasn’t considered enormous for the time, though. The rear anti lock brakes were called Sure Track.

"My" car, finally. I have driven my 1975 since 2002. I bought it in Cape Coral, not too far from you, and shipped it home. It is the closest you get to an "old money" car in/from the US. 18:08 Unlike most other FoMoCo cars with concealed headlights, it operates with a single vacuum motor, why the covers always follow each other. 18:49 The wheels are solid aluminium. 19:44 The sunroof was available with a full vinyl roof as well. 23:20 The trunk is very limited for a car this size. It takes a medium hard suitcase and a large soft sports bag. That is it. 24:49 Key lock for the hood is optional and comes with a key lock for the spare tire as well!! 26:23 Rear springs are coil and not leaf. 26:45 Four wheel disc brakes became standard in 1975. Anti lock brakes on the rear, called Safe Track Brakes, was standard. 38:04 Trunk release in the glove box was standard. 39:25 Remote controlled mirrors with cable was standard. Not power operated. 41:15 If the steering is not fine, put a new power steering gearbox in it, and you will be amazed. I bought mine with 97K miles on it and have passed 122K miles.

Bill I love your Lincoln videos, they just make my day! I was just looking the other day to see if you had one on the Mark IV and then boom here one gets posted today. These cars have so much class & character. Growing up my grandfather owned a 1976 Continental sedan that I was fascinated with. I would surmise this is where my passion for Lincolns came from as I have owned a 2000 LS, 2004 Navigator, & 2007 MKZ. Currently have a 2017 Continental as my daily driver, which is a fantastic car & totally overlooked, underappreciated. Looking to add a last gen Town Car & Mark V to the collection someday.

Hi Bill... thanks for another great review! We love the history lesson (review for some of us... we turned 20 in '76), too. From the overall condition of the car, we'd vote to replace that pull strap, but leave the armrest for the new owner to decide. The strap isn't broken, but it does go a bit beyond that loved-wear known as patina, to us. Keep up with that "nyet-nyet Soviet" whiskey... Cheers! 🥃

Oh my gosh finally something beautiful to look at. I was expecting to hear Barry White singing. The country music is good for the other trucks. There is nothing that rides like that generation Lincoln Continental mark it's even better than the newer ones(77-79). So glad you mentioned Frank Cannon I used to love watching the cars on that show in particular the mark 4. Back then I had my own business detailing cars and you are spot on the people that owned the Lincoln's the Lincoln's especially the marks were very different than Cadillac owners. The mark owners were the guys who owned the bars and restaurants in Pittsburgh they all call each other compe or cuz. Italian for cousin. So happy we're not looking at pickup trucks and Ford Thunderbirds is underbirds. Just saying.....:) However, when I used to be in the car business, we had a saying "There is an A** for every seat, and this one is for you!"

That is a beautiful car .I had a 1972 mk 4 in bronze here in the UK back in about 1977,when I was in my twenties ,I loved it and would polish it inside and out every weekend, I regret to this day selling it. If I could have the chance to own another one I would be a very happy man.

Bill, instead of getting right to work, I treated myself to your excellent car review at 1.75 speed to justify the time away from work. I remember 1976 and the flags, six million dollar man toys etc. A simpler time for sure and the nostalgia your review evokes is enjoyable. Back to work I go with a shorter lunch break to make up the time.

The Landau top was a option, the car came WITH A FULL vinyl top and the Moon Roof was another option . This car is GORGEOUS . I would Love to see this car with the Dual Banded white wall tires on it . They were Good Years originally or you could get Michelin single thin white wall tires. Today Diamondback tires makes the Dual banded white walls .They are Beautiful . The cloth interior was a option called Versailles the style is GORGEOUS . I have seen the Versailles interior done in Dove Grey leather in a 1976 Continental Mark IV Cartier owner had it done ,And done to perfection

First & only family vacation was in February 1973, upstate NY to central FL east & west coast. Main vehicles we saw were Lincoln Mark IV, silver with silver padded vinyl roof & cranberry interior. They seemed to be everywhere. Jambalaya song on what seemed to be every radio station ... Also, Cadillac Sedan DeVilles & Fleetwoods were also in abundance. Came into possession of a Cadillac hood ornament at a motel we stayed at ... Believe I still have that in NY somewhere. Have been a central NY resident since 2007. Also seen all over the place on 1973 vacation were Volkswagen Beetles/Super Beetles & Type 2 Baywindow vans. Lincoln could have huge sales if brought back the Mark IV retro style with today's technologies & creature comforts

John Fogerty was stuck in a contract dispute when he did that Jambalaya song (on which he played most of the instruments), so the label read "Blue Ridge Rangers". That was one of the best country-rock albums ever recorded. I also remember "Pieces Of April" by 3 Dog Night, Stir I Up (the USA re-release) by Johnny Nash and Do Ya? by the move (later re-recorded by ELO) as some of the "Lost-45s" from that February.

Beautiful car! I would LOVE to own one. Takes me back to my childhood. My grandpa had, I believe a 79, and after he passed away in 83, we got the car and drove it for a few years. The seats are so comfy and the car would just float down the road.

Very cool that you are such a fan of Mark IV's now. I've always liked the IV's better than the V's. I currently have a 1975 Mark IV with the gold luxury package. I bought it from the guy who bought it from "The Little Old Lady". Verna purchased the car new in '75 and kept it until 2000, when she turned 80 years old and decided it was time to let it go, with 42k miles on the clock. The second owner had it from 2000 to 2015, and only added an additional 1500 miles to the clock. Consider myself very privileged to be the third owner of this car. Even people who are not remotely interested in cars stop and stare and ask questions about it. Don't fix any of the superficial issues with your Cartier edition. It's all part of the car and part of its history.

Thanks for an informative video. When I spotted the dealer's plate on the trunk I was pleasantly surprised. Hassett is still doing business in Wantagh, Long Island, NY. I used to drive past there almost daily and my in-laws lived less than a mile from them. I came very close to buying one of those Marks in 1988 but decided against it. I wonder if that keyed hood lock wasn't an aftermarket thing? Installing anti-theft systems into cars was a booming business back then. Thanks again for all the history.

That keyed hood lock is factory. Had it on my '76. Bill, pull the wheels. Lots of 76 Mark IV's and T-Birds had 4 wheel disc brakes. Hope that car was down in Fla a lot longer than Long Island, or you will have some rusty floors.

Great video. As for the colors, the Mark IV could be ordered in the buyers choice of 22 factory colors. Most luxury cars are not available in half that number of colors today.

Great cars. I have a 72 and 74. They actually have rear coil suspension. Much better than the equivalent Eldorado. In 76 you could get 4 wheel discs. They were standard on the MKV.

My Dad had 2 of those over the late 70’s both 4 doors. He use to drive a long way every week that the Illinois state legislature was in session. He was a lobbyist for the trucking industry. The 1st one was Black then he went the complete other direction and bought White. That car was such a great highway ride. Very comfortable.

I remember a local "big fish in a small pond" sort of well-to-do family, that bought the Lincoln Marks regularly. I went to high school with several of their offspring. At night, the son that was my age would do donuts in the local parks, leaving deep dug, circular tracks in the grass. LOL 😂 Those were the days...

My grandfather owned one of these. Maybe a year older since it had the flat across steering wheel cross bar with the straight laurel leaves and flat plate hub caps with the hexagonal center piece. He played beautiful easy listening music and sitting in the back seat being 8 years old I felt famous. I got to ride cross country from Detroit to Portland in it. When I got to be 16 I did get to drive it. It got to be my grandmothers daily driver and she deserved it! Loved the Roman numerals in the clock! This also where the word “Ajar” became part of our vocabulary.

Full size coupes are wonderful cars. Smooth and very relaxing ride. You just didn’t get in a mindset to race around and corner fast to make the traffic light. Driving was calmer and relaxed. With all that steel surrounding you the safety level was quite good. They once called me the Monte Carlo killer when one ran a red and I tagged him good with my 78 Caddy Coupe. Front end bent up but all the lights worked thanks to bumper shock absorbers . The MC was a write off but no one hurt. I did spin that Monte Carlo and broke its rear axle. When you have the weight and momentum you’ll be okay 👍

But one BIG safety issue....that Ford was slow to fix...even in these behemoths...the gas tanks were located too close to the bumper...many burn victims ensued, during the 60s and 70s too. Iaccoca even told folks to stop restoring the original Mustangs, because of this fatal flaw.
