Love this game and have a home brew of it in my small NES collection now. Back in 2020 we worked insane amounts of overtime at my job and I spent a lot of hours hiding in the bathroom playing this game on my phone using an emulator. I made it to the door where the final boss was and stopped and then somehow my save got corrupted and i had to give up. I was devastated, but went on the play and beat the original Silent Hill that same year, also on my phone and at work because I earn my paychecks honestly.

It's kind of crazy how Sweet Home's influence can be felt even today. Games like Fear and Hunger are still holding that flag proud, showing an RPG experience can still be horrifying.

@@RNGGaming-nv6zi No problem dude. That being said, you should probably know that it also has a lot of uh, "spicy" content too. And based on the cg gallery, it does look like it leans heavily into the vn genre. One thing I heard about it is that if you can't beat the game, you can restart with your levels intact, thus making your subsequent runs a lot easier. I don't remember if items were included in that or not. Kind of like a pseudo ng+ mode.

judging from what you're saying here and the game ~ it' feels like Eathbound to me! and yeah I kinda dig these kinds of RPGS. and I can see how this technically inspired Resident Evil on different levels.

Eh. The first Resident Evil was really Alone in the Dark. Which had a significantly bigger influence on the design of RE than Sweet Home did. They creators of RE tried to act like they didn't know what Alone in the Dark was for almost 2 decades and only have recently started to admit it. Which was fairly obvious to anyone who'd played the two of them. RE copped the control scheme, core mechanics, the setting, even the man/woman protag selection. lol. RE is a refined version of Alone in the Dark. Sweet Home was really cool though! It was one of the better RPGs I played during the early PC emulation/translation scene days. lol.

Sweet Home predates alone in the dark by 3 years. And the creator of resident evil said that he used Sweet Home as the foundation of the series. But as someone who played Alone in the Dark back in 1992. I agree that it also heavily influenced the genre

True, but I feel that re1 did it a lot better. Those old Alone in the Dark games are pretty jank. No autoaim meant it was easy to waste bullets shooting the wall instead of the monsters. Also some of the puzzles are just ridiculous. I did like that those games had melee weapons that were actually useful and not just inventory space wasters though.

@@RNGGaming-nv6zi There's also the fact the producer of the original Resident Evil 1 was the director of Sweet Home as well. So one could interpret Resident Evil 1 was a spiritual sequel of Sweet Home. I think the thing that makes the biggest difference between Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil was Alone in the Dark was designed as a adventure game from the get go, so most of the BS in the game can be easily dismissed as adventure game staples. Where was RE1 was made by people who made a lot conventional games but their first time making an adventure game. The auto aim (which was in RE1 but not in the US port of it) and the fact that every solution is intuitive or at the least there's in a note somewhere on how to solve it are fortunate side effects of this.
