@Mr.P.Griffith4 жыл бұрын
My 2019 marlin 5 had a "100mm" coil fork that with my entire body weight on the bars gave me 15mm of suspension. I rode it on a flat ungroomed trail twice and was almost rattled off the grips and then it bucked me out of control. My lbs wouldn't do a thing for me but to buy it back for less. I've been upgrading it ever since. I have a 1x12 in the mail right now to finish it off. Tires, stem, reba duel air, dropper, pedals. All used, making the bike ride like a dream, even with it's current 3x7. A week from now it'll be 2lbs lighter and a clutch mean quieter too. All that comes with a major caveat... I had to learn how to do everything myself. Which took time. But now I can service everything including the stealth dropper.
@dunnotck14 жыл бұрын
I'm currently learning how to service my bike too. Little by little I just learned how to install and adjust v-brakes and rear derailleur. Next I'll learn how to replace the bearings on the wheels. I'm doing it more out of necessity than pleasure, because the local mechanic is horrible and has caused more damage than benefit to my poor bike.

I bought one last summer and I've been having fun riding it for months - with a few upgrades like entry-level hydrolics, and a chain guard. Granted I don't ride that hard, but it's held up very well. Now that I know I'm going to keep at it (I'm 65 and just getting back into retired biking) I'm upgrading to MicroShift Advent X and new forks (TBD). Given that I didn't know if I would keep it up, it was a smart move - and the geometry is more than adequate for upgrading the beast at a still lower price than an ego-brand bike.

Daily MTB, I have a slightly different view of your review. I feel that really, even if you get a slightly higher priced entry level MTB you are going to get it with compromises in the same exact areas. You will have a crap shock, a almost trash rated drivetrain, crappy tires and rims and all of that at a $1200-1400 price range. I mean, I have seen Trek $1500 bikes (My favorite big company btw) that have eagle sx. If you spent just $400 on this original purchase and started upgrading the fork and wheel in the front with quality used (about $400) you are still going to have a better and lighter bike then the $1500 bike. Then wait a little while and purchase the Eagle NX for $370, Get a $150 Dropper... I mean, I’m no mathematician but if you did that you would have a bike you spent about the same as the entry level bike but have much better components then you would get at the LBS. Just saying
@vivek_v4 жыл бұрын
The low end hub on the Axum won't support an Eagle NX. But it does support some budget 1x10 drivetrains
@robertcoates27524 жыл бұрын
But then you are still stuck with a pretty crap geo, no rear thru axle and a probably crap rear wheel. IMO upgrading a bike like that is just not worth it. There are some direct to buyer brands that offer decent value with a good frame like Ragley, Nukeproof, NS Bikes, Vitus.
@vivek_v4 жыл бұрын
@@robertcoates2752 well actually I would have to disagree with you. I have a friend who has an Axum, and it has modern geometry (67 degree headtube angle, pretty short stem, pretty short chainstays, and 720mm wide bars which are a sensible width). To be honest, the Axum feels pretty good compared to my 2000 dollar Specialized Chisel Comp. And both of the Axum wheels are double walled, and the rear wheel is still holding up perfectly after some of my stunting that I did on the bike. Many people look down on most big box bikes, but if your size fits the Schwinn Axum, I would go as far as to say that it is the best value beginner bike. It even has a 1x8 drivetrain with enough range. And not to mention that the dropper post version has a dropper that is actually pretty good.

@Bacon6764 жыл бұрын
Well, you can easily replace the front fork with a rock shox coil fork that has 29er quick-release dropouts, and won't require you to replace the bottom headset cup, because it's a straight steerer. I would actually still say this could be a good beginner bike, and might make for an interesting build-a-bike project platform for those with money to burn. It's got dropper-post cable routing provisions, it's got a tapered headset, it's got a replaceable derailleur hanger, and it uses standard hub spacing in the rear. This is an option, but as you said, it might be the *best* option.

In Aldi in Australia they are selling a $400 aud bike with a 1+10 drivetrain and hydraulic disc brakes
@LebronPhoto1 Жыл бұрын
I have an Axum DP. I replaced the fork with a Manitou Markour. The derailleur is an Acera. Brakes are mechanical (although I replaced them recently with Shimano MT200's). I've taken that bike down black diamond trails. That said, I am not a jumper. At my age, I have to select carefully the features I actually try. My next upgrade is a clutch derailleur. Keep in mind that mountain bikers have existed since before the fancy forks, slack frames, hydraulic disc brakes, thru axles, clutch derailleurs, etc. Those things are great and make riding easier and safer, but it's not all or nothing. It also depends on the level of riding. Compare it to road cyclists, a casual weekend rider will have a basic road bike, someone racing on occasion may want something a little upgraded, and the Tour de France racer will want top of the line cutting edge equipment......but, that entry level bike today is in many ways superior to what pros used in the Tour in the 70's and 80's, and they raced. The Schwinn Axum is a good entry level MTB that with upgrades can become a much more capable hardtail. It's a great starting point for someone entering the sport. It is certainly better than say an entry level Trek Marlin given that you can use the $300 price difference and immediately upgrade some of the components.

That being said, i truly believe Walmart and Schwinn built a perfect gateway for someone like myself to test the waters of this sport, or even easy trail riding at affordable pricing. So when you call them cheap bikes or walmart bikes i can totally see where someone would take offense to this, because whether someone is able to afford a big box bike or a pro bike that person is still spending their hard earned money for the same reason, that happens to be the sport. My aspiration was that this bike would give me results that were sufficient for a beginner like myself. I purchased this bike a week ago and haven't recieved it yet, now im wondering if should've.

shimano mt200 brakes , manitou markhor fork , sram x3 derailleur. I think this would make good upgrades and a really fun bike to ride for dirt cheap!

So takeaways: 1. Throw an advent 9 speed group 2. Throw on a 120 Suntour Epixon 3. Throw a set of Shimano Hydraulics on there 4. Make your $400 Walmart bike a permanent member of your bike collection because you’ll never get back the $400 in upgrades you threw on it back. I love budget bikes but this one pales in comparison to the Colorado Comp. I think the ticket here for a newbie is to find a pre-owned one on the cheap and upgrade as needed. You have to give Schwinn/Pacific credit for being the first big box brand to try cater to the entry level MTB’r.

Funny thing is my Cannondale trail 8 has only 75mm of travel and I can't bottom it out at all but then again I don't hit jumps or drops

Nice, it looks like an older Trek. I can't wait until I can have another bike to do my vids on. Rebuilding a 2011 Trek frame we got free now. By the way, what was the weight on the Schwinn?

I've had a few cheap bikes from target and Walmart. Most of the time they do.. decently but I've had a couple that I've shredded the crankset after just a day of riding.

Props for calling out the fork for what it is Josh. I've seen a few other reviews that gloss over it. By the way, how's the mini truck coming along?

What about someone who wants to ride light trails, no jumping ? By the way I'm 70 and ride mostly roads on an e-bike pedal assist.

Could you do a review of the gt aggressor pro?
@etooamill95284 жыл бұрын
I was conflicted between that bike and the trek marlin 5, I would also love a review
@nickgriffin42844 жыл бұрын
I have the aggressor pro. I’ve had it for a little under a year now. Decent bike to start with. I’ve done all the normal stuff 1x10 hydraulic brakes. Sr suntour epixon fork. Maxxis tires setup tubeless. I got it for 300 on sale and I wish the Axum came out last year because I’d rather have that as the base to work with.

Curious your opinion on the 2020 Giant Talon 2. I'm just getting into mountain biking and picked up a talon 2 yesterday. Put in 10 miles the first day and I'm loving it. Thanks in advance.

What do you think of the GT avalanche 1x29” for a beginner bike I’m a 6’2 250lb guy just starting to get back into MT biking. Thanks for the videos!

I ordered one with the DS. I'm in my forties and I haven't been on a bike in 25 years. I workout but I need cardio so hopefully this helps. The great thing about Walmart is no hassle return just in case this old body can't handle the bike. Just wondering what location has snow in late April

I’ve been trying to ride for the last three days and i went in the middle of a rainstorm when the trails were fine but got stranded at the top and washed out and got covered in mud☹️

The big thing I dislike about this bike is that the rear wheel is 141mm QR. Its impossible to just replace the rear wheel with a drop in upgrade. You have to go with a higher end 148mm hub that has QR end caps. Really takes it out of the budget category for long term use. It seems great for the price otherwise though.

That cardboard tube is inadequate in rough handling of shipment. Mine got crushed and the bearings race got bent and was missing bearings. A thick plastic sleeve might solve that problem.
