the paradox of Limp Bizkit is that the thing that ruins them is fred durst, but the reason they stood out is also fred durst. the instrumentals are fine, with a better vocalist they'd be a reasonably respected but not broadly remembered nu metal band like Mudvayne or Deftones. but fred's whiny white boi angst made him the voice of a generation of angsty 13 year olds.

Limp Bizkit were all about the live experience. I got free tickets to one of their gigs in the early 2000’s. I’ve never seen a band rock a crowd like that before or since. @Alexander so, a lot of the cause was the heat and price gouging, sure. But "Break Stuff" was what set the crowd OFF. There are videos available, you can see moshing across the entire width of the crowd, people pulling down structures, climbing poles, just generally going apesh-t. They were no more frustrated then than they were earlier that day- Durst and that song was what lit the fuse.

Dude went thru puberty in like 4th grade, had a mustache and everything. He definitely knew from a young age he was going to be a rock star. He was smashing early and I was still worried about fireworks and BB guns. Dude did good for himself. His dad was the most gangster dude I ever met. He had to get his arm amputated and it was not a big deal. He just Ramboed the whole situation and went back to work. His mom is one of the nicest people in the entire world. Significant Other is a better album, but Wes' delay riffs were great on Starfish. For a brief period in the 90s heavy music was allowed to be fun and completely outlandish. The music fit the time perfectly when MTV had it's hold on the youth. I believe a lot of people, myself included, love those albums because it takes us back to a very special time in our lives. Being 9-13 and recording all the korn, kid rock, bizkit, dmx videos on VHS so I can watch them again and again while jumping around in the living room.

2 notes about Hot Dog: 1) the whole "fuck count" thing was ripped off from Insane Clown Posse's song Fuck The World, which came out 2 years before Chocolate Fartfish: "Don't bother trying to analyze these rhymes/In this song I say fuck 93 times" 2) Trent Reznor didn't have a lot of nice things to say about Fred Turds around that time, and Fred took it personally. Hence, using Trent's own lyrics to try dissing him. Not only does this attempt at a diss suck, Trent just let the whole thing slide ("Maybe I'm too stupid to read between the lines, but I don't know how this could be a diss, it doesn't sound like anything; but hey, if it makes people happy, then let them make what they want" -TR). And to top it all off, the band had to pay royalties to Trent for using his lyrics without permission. How's that for a diss?

If you want a better album to try, “Significant other” is leagues better and proves that Fred Durst can be a pretty decent vocalist if he isn’t sounding like someone who’s constantly kicked in the nuts. Plus, “Don’t go off wondering” is probably one of my favourite Limp Bizkit songs and Fred Durst’s screams on that track genuinely shocked me the first time as they’re actually pretty good and not shitty butt rock screams like that of Aaron Lewis from Staind.

I don't know if it's aged badly, because I was a Limp Bizkit fan at the time and I don't remember any of us taking it particularly seriously. I think it sounded then as absurd as it does now, but we just went with it (or didn't, for many).

If you want some actually good innovative alt metal I’d suggest Korn’s Self Titled debut and Issues (their two most acclaimed albums). Self Titled provides brutal honesty lyrically and divine (no pun intended) anger (that was completely justified and didn’t come off as bratty or ungenuine) while Issues takes that sound and experiments with it a little bit, leading to a more mellow but adventurous album overall.

Fun fact about "Getcha Groove On": this "Dirt Road Mix" is actually a remix of the real song released on their 2001 remix album New Old Songs. Limp Bizkit are my all time favourite band. I've seen a whole plethora of people hate on them over the last 20 years and that vitriol only serves to make me love them even more. They embrace that hatred as a band (see Love the Hate on Still Sucks) and they still kill it. I get it, it's fun to point and laugh at something people love, I'm guilty of that when people defend Avatar (the film, not the band) so I aint exactly a saint here but the fact remains Chocolate Starfish went 6x platinum so it was clearly very popular for the time. They're still going after all this time and they're more tongue in cheek now than they ever have been. I don't go to Bizkit for insightful lyrics or chord progressions that blow the mind, I go to them because they're so much fun and they've genuinely helped me through some of the darkest times in my life by putting a smile on my face when I didn't think that was possible. I ain't about to apologise for loving a band that's done so much to benefit me and my life. If that gives me a "bad taste in music" because of it then I'll wear it like a crown.
