I am from Singapore and have been to India several times. Honestly, it all boils down to your spending power. On one hand, I have seen slums, cows, beggars, stray dogs, chaotic streets but on the other hand I have also been to the most beautiful, serene and posh places in India. This American tourist only wants to spend a few dollars and yet expects so much in return. If he had tried spending on accommodation in hotels like Taj, Holiday Inn or any other reputed place he would have gotten the best service and enjoyed top notch cleanliness. As for food, come one man India is a food heaven. If a person is so stupid to eat at some random hole in the wall shop located near a slum, he has only himself to blame if anything goes wrong.
