I dont think the HIMARS was in IRaq. I know the M270 was for sure as we had one on our base and launched rounds every time a fire mission was conducted. regardless the HIMARS is identical to the M270 with half the payload and can go in areas where the M270 cant go.

The M270 is on tracked vehicles. Have they considered retro fitting the tracks? Placing some launchers on trailers would double the punch. Support units could reload the trailers and take them forward.

The tracks cost more and slow down the vehicle, unless the terrain require tracks. Tracks also cost more. But the tracked MLRS I saw before have double the rocket loads. (12?)

M270 has double the launcher tubes than the HIMARS.. lets not forget that the M270 was around long before the HIMARS. HIMARS carries 6 launch tubes compared to the M270 with 12. The other thing about HIMARS is the fact that the vehicle signature is low. Meaning you cant tell if the HIMARS is in the area compared to the M270 MLRS which is loud.

I still don’t understand what is unique about this system. Compared to the Russian Smerch MLRS, the Iskander OTRK, or the North Korean KN-25, this is a rather weak toy. The United States sent them to Ukraine because they actually have nothing else.

I'll explain the reason and you decide. The Russians knew a couple HIMARS were coming, figured they could destroy or deal with them without much effort until their stuff started blowing up around them, far from the front. I'd say that was a shocking experience, being unable to stop the missiles, so they had to relocate and disperse stuff. Similarly, when they knew ATACMS were being sent, they also figured the missiles would be as easily shot down as their own missiles, so again did nothing. Must have been quite a shock when they realized that those air bases in Luhansk and Berdiansk couldn't be protected against the least capable of ATACMS, so now all air bases are outside the range of those missiles.
