Yeah, the archers in the original Shogun 2 is a bit unbalance when placed against the FOTS units. Because of their stats, they pretty much can range out FOTS rifles. Note, how people rarely use the FOTS bows that are balance to perform worse than the expensive rifles. Moreover, most of the FOTS units has no to little armor, so bows can kill them easily.

Actually archers are not really unbalanced. A FotS player that is not playing too passive would beat archers on an openfield map really easy. Archers have 2 main jobs. At first they have higher range than guns and with that can force enemies coming to you. On the other hand they dont have a straight line of sight, so you can controle terrain with hills or use them as support behind your army. Yeah FotS units don't have alot armor, but archers(at least not in the amount I used in the battle) will never success on a flat map like ricefields if the FotS player is competent.

Hi Apollo, thanks for the great video :D Good to hear that you enjoyed it. I love this battle so much, because it shows that you can even beat modern armies in ranged combat with traditional troops. Here are some thoughts about the army and the battle: This army composition was extremely strong, because of the situation on the battlefield. At first the map has this hill in the mid, so everything behind it is safe against gun fire. Thats how the archer could help me take strong positions (additionally archers have more range than guns). Then I had luck that my team could take controle of the archery dojo, which increased the reload rate and helped out alot. I actually needed to laugh alot at 14:13 cause what you say was actually what happened. Thats why I moved back to the dojo to refill ammo of like half my army. Yeah you are right rockets+archery dojo is a powerful combination, but thats why you try to avoid getting enemies this advantage at all cost usually. The reason why my army worked out so good against the enemies was, because they were Fall of the Samurai players. They prepare to defend against a charge, cause thats what happens in like every battle. So I wanted things to go not like normal and made up this army composition to beat FotS with ranged units instead of melee power. And I am really sure those players didn't expected to face such an army at all (new tactics are always effective when enemeis don't know how to deal with it). But I would not call it overpowered as this army has 0 chance to win in case enemies spam many melee units. I even struggled a bit against the cav at the end, because you cannot protect all this ranged units from every direction and a short moment of inattention can make cav kill alot of your troops. So yeah this army is strong and alot fun, but it is also risky on the other hand. Thanks for covering this replay and I hope you enjoy the other ones I sent you aswell ;)

Big fan of your army composition Trebor! It's a great sight to see matchlock Ashigaru defeating modern rifles. I always play full Ashigaru army with Oda style (Matchlock, spear and bows) but I can't get my matchlock to get the fire by ranks! Was a treat to see it here.

@@jacksonreed1531 There is a mod for Medieval 2 called 1648 that is about the 30years war. That comes really close to real pike and shot formations. Type in search: "pike and shot formations 1648 total war" or so, I once saw a nice video of someone portraying different historical pike and shot formations of the different countries.

Yeah there's still some ground to cover too. CA did Heian (Rise of Samurai), Sengoku Jidai (main game) and late Edo-early Meiji (FOTS). The Ashikaga times were interesting. And some fantasy campaign can happen with Edo if one includes 17th century Korea and China with maybe bits of India.

If the blue side had done a concentrated infantry charge in red's centre at the start of the battle and pushed through his thin yari wall, red would have had to pull away and perhaps pivot round to fire on the blue infantry in the centre. This reforming would allow blue to mass a cav charge down the line and hit all of red's missile units. This should be immediately followed up with an infantry charge from blue's reserve infantry that will tie down blue's spears and cav that he's just brought forward to attack your cav charge and allow your cav to escape. Once your (blue's) cav is out of there it should still be at at least half strength per unit on average so have them flank round the line and hit the missile units that have just moved behind the melee and mop them up. Missile heavy armies in Shogun 2 are always susceptible to heavy infantry charges and getting outflanked by cav and are only really dangerous if you let them whittle you down over time which will exponentially decrease your chances of performing a successful mass charge if you wait until later in the battle to do commit to it. In my (albeit limited) experience, army compositions like red's are quite limited and often loose in multiplayer to more flexible armies or heavy infantry armies. The only time these compositions seem to be effective is when the opponent doesn't know how to deal with them and/or does have the unit composition themselves to pull off a mass infantry charge (this video showcased more of the former than the latter).

You are right, this army is really vulnerable against melee rushes, but enemies had alot guns that are not too good in melee. The Yari wall is stronger than you think, as I used upgraded Yari Ashigaru that can easyly match any unit they face from a front attack. Also consider that my guns do some damage aswell and I could fall back behind the hill and expect some help of black who had good melee troops. Yeah cav is deadly too, but FotS cav has low armor so arrows can kill them not bad. Additionally in Avatar conquest you can use retainers. For this army +4 anticav for all skirmishers is a must and it really shows effect in combat. Cav won't be unstoppable then. I agree they had good chances to win, like in every battle, but I think the same way, that they didn't know how to deal with the army and stayed too passive.

Yellow did a mistake to engage trebor line, archers and guns combo is better than tandart line, he should have used his cavalry against him with vit and run tactics instead of helping blue. He did well retreating and saving his troops

How is blue "intact" at 11:40? The few forces that are left are seriously understrength. Compared to that black has fewer units left, but those are almost full strength. The battle was long over by that point. Red could have just charged at that point and would have one more decisively.

I guess he means after my other red ally got beaten there has still been some troops of blue surviving the attack. Well I could have charge in and lose it at this point XD Traditional units have way weaker melee than FotS units (kinda stupid, but its like this) except my few pike units nothing had don any damage, not to mention that cav had surrounded me then and killed me easy. Believe me, charging in at this point had been a stupid idea.

Is a great and impressive battle and is good to see this army composition used by veteran and honorable players like Trebor. But, honestly i hate that type of Pike and shots army, because now all the players from Classics avatars of Shogun 2 use a composition like this and is hard beat them (i like to play with varied and most aggresive army tactics). If you are close to beating players who play this tactic, most of them disconnect before the fight is over and you have a victory in your hands. This is the reason why i dont play now too much in the classic avatar conquest (now i play Fall of the samurai only), is boring to see how always player that sit and just hold a position, won battles... is too anoying; Before, people played with quite varied and fun tactics. =/

Haha, that is the problem. Over time player realize that I win often so I get copied. But this tactic is really weak tbh. You can not resist a charge. I guess at the end they even could have send their rifles into melee and then flank with cav from all sides and I had no chance to block it all. The enemeis where way too passive and used too less units same time. See my army has an incredible firepower on small space, but at the moment I get flanked enemies can achieve higher fire power. I guess if I had their armies I could have won the battle agaisnt my troops. They also gave up archery dojo too fast which boosted me aswell alot. There were alot reasons what made this army perform good, but its not as said in the title op.

@@trebor797 I've seen different variants of the same tactic, not much effective like yours used (in terms of units), but always with terrain adventage that reduce the movement effectivity. Various of my friends that are veteran players in this game, say me the same opinion that you, about how defeat that army composition. Perhaps my mistake is don't know how micromanaging and move faster the units on the same time (fault of experience). I try different new tactics in battle, they all fail, but i have one that only used it in custom battles for now and it might work; wish me luck, I still haven't dared to use it. Right now I'm focused on leveling up my FOTS avatar.

This army would be awful against any melee rush. Well on this map you don't really need to expect artillery as you have a really limited possibility to shoot enemies. Also this army has numbers and can use loose formation. Artillery wouldn't hurt too bad.

I think their role were like fire bomb ashigaru but they still have melee capabilities to survive. And if you used their stealth abilities, they can move anywhere undetected, and smoke bomb, when they throw smoke bomb to opponent unit, the unit effectiveness in battle will decreasing for a while. Edit: oh and sometimes. I use to them to to capture the castle from the back, when the enemy were busy facing to fighting my other unit

Ninjas are low in number, but extremely strong in melee. They have a skill called stealth with that they can get super close before enemies will see them and it also boost melee attack and charge bonus alot. They have vanguard deployment aswell and like others said grenades. They can do super effective suprise attacks and can be super deadly. Another trait is that they can deal better with terrain and especially in sieges they can be useful. In S2 any wall can be climbed up by troops. While normal troops can suffer alot casulties from climbing up (alot soldiers fall down in the process) ninjas won't lose any soldier, no matter how high the wall is and they climb way faster than normal troops. Ninjas can be really worth their money if used right.

@@britainboi1019 ninja has ability called smoke bombs when you use it. Their next throw will be a smoke bomb for 1 turn. Decreasing the effectiveness for the enemy unit for a while

Broo I remember playing this on the computer And I Fought a Guy and Just sliced through his guns I full forced rushed his lines and his Artillery was gunning me down But The thing is I let only 3 Units of archers Spaced out Rush 1 unit I charged into there Cav so my other 2 could take out there artillery I Took all of there artillery in a 4v4 And then I simply waited while my allies fought planning my attack eventually my allies were getting messed up and were telling me do something so I Charged with My Katana Samurai and Cut there GunMen down I love Samurai armies over Gunner Armies

Even more confusing when people use their custom names for units. Once I named troops on prupose like other units (so for example I named Elite unit like a bad unit of the same class) just to confuse enemies when they actually fight a completly other unit than they thought XD
