When I took it to my trusted mechanic it was full of holes right next to the rear shock top mounts. It was lethal! The dealer I had gone to was horrified and tracked down where it had been tested. Turns out the MOT tester was already under investigation and was prosecuted for much dodginess! The dealer refunded me in full and went after the garage through the courts!

Registered in Glasgow is one thing. But where was it kept? Where were the previous MOTs done? That's a better guide to the area the car has been in. Most people don't travel far for an MOT. Or as you have a serious problem, you could ask if the DVLA can give you the Postcode area of the Previous Owners. You may find somewhere that's is a coastal town or a rural area with higher snowfall, so the roads are gritted moreoften

We got burned on our first car (Honda CRV MK2). Advisory free MOT and said advisories on previous MOT had been sorted. Took car on test drive (my friend drove it) but noticed a whistling noise and dealer said it was either sunroof or roof bars. Paid a non refundable £250 deposit as this covered for a service and MOT in case we backed out on buying it. two days later we were back to pay the difference (full asking price) insurance sorted,6 month road tax. Drove it all the way back from Burnley to South Manchester but still the whistling. Took it to an independent Honda specialist just 10 days after picking it up to find it would have failed on a seized calliper, rear discs (scored) rear pads (1.5mm) a leaking front strut and the drop links from the previous MOT hadn’t been done. It also had a loose bolt on the middle exhaust. Since then,we racked up a bill of over £3,000 in repairs. Ok things like aircon Condenser, compressor and regas is a luxury, but it’s also had a new CAT,2x o2 sensors, third gear sensor, 4x tyres. We get a new car next week (Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross) but can’t help feeling sad getting rid of our first car. It’s taken us to places we never would have thought of visiting

I lived in Aberdeen in the late 90s, and bought a little blue Fiat Cinquecento, it was still under 3 years old. We kept it for 2 years, and in that time we replaced,( rust damaged) front brake discs, handbrake mechanism, and even a rusted out and leaking petrol tank.! Seeing cars with rust holes big enough to put a plate of haggis in was an everyday experience in the streets of the lovely 'granite City'.😊

Darn... I hope the rear wheel bearings are ok on the rear sub'... they can go- and can be right lil' sods to get off ! That front sub is a horror story- even for a 61- especially as the car looks really nice !! Hope it all works out ok...

Think I saw that Aygo on Just Rolled In... Dob the MOT station in - there easily could have been a major accident if the steering had failed through subframe collapse.

The anchor points on the chassis itself also look on the way out, but could be saved before the new subframe goes back in. MOT testers are very very fussy normally on any rust within 30 cms of the “defined area” around suspension and seat belt anchor points. I can’t see how that Aygo got through last time. There’s more than one hole, they don’t all appear simultaneously.

Hidden rust seems to be a problem with Japanese cars. In my recent car search the 2009-12 Toyota Avensis was top of my list - until I checked the MOT records and pretty much all of them had rusty subframe advisories. Ended up buying a Skoda Superb which has lived up to its name so far.

In the Netherlands most private workshops do MOT checks (unlike any other Eurpean country as far as I know!) but they do get Government checks…. and these Government Controls are not to be taken lightly!! Yes there are some cowboys (without exception the shops that end up with all the basketcases…. which makes them loose their licence even faster….) But a subframe like this would fail an MOT in 98% of our MOT-tests…. the 2% are the corrupt ones…. And yes I agree this subframe must have been an MOT failure 2 years ago!!!

Did a rear break job on my 2002 VW lupo after I'd done I noticed a small hole in my rear axle a quick tap with a hammer an wow it was cracked 70% hidden by a small amount of surface rust! Found a low mileage front car with a mint impact beam axle had to swop it out an redo all the brakes sorted surface rust hides trouble guys be careful out there!

Salt on roads is a killer. Here in Portugal a twenty year old car will still have paint on chassis . I tried to report a dodgy car dealer who was selling a Toyota Hilux surf which had a cracked chassis and missing front prop shaft.contacted driver vehicle standards authority and they were not interested.

That would probably be a trading standards job rather than dvsa. Report it to the trading standards team that covers the dealers area.

@@fools_opinions I did tell the person at the backstreet car dealers who was just the hired help and he said he would tell his boss. Went back a few weeks later under the cover of darkness and it was still for sale.had a patch welded on the chassis but still no front propshaft. Hopefully any prospective buyer would have noticed the problems. This all happened 12 years ago so hopefully the vehicle got recycled and is now a fridge.😁

Exactly. Both my car and my wife's are over 10 years old and totally solid underneath - also both on Scottish (Edinburgh) plates too I might add. Mind you their service histories showed they'd hardly spent any significant time up there and I did inspect them both before purchase - as I would do with any used car. Plates alone don't always tell the full story though. Many moons ago I used to get company cars from VW registered straight off the boat with Oxford plates (VW UK HQ was (is) in Milton Keynes). Mine never went anywhere near there while I had it.

MOT testing standards vary so much a test pass is almost worthless in some ways. I had a fail one year on n/s brake pipes from front to back and no advisories, the garage delayed the retest so it had to have a full test 12 days later and they failed the pipes on the entire O/S. So from no advisory to fail in 12 days and it never even left their forecourt. That was the first and last time I ever went there.

Very well done on this guys, how does a thirteen year old car get into that amount of rust! I have seen forty year old cars with less than half the problems shown here, and I am sure many will have seen far older ones with less corrosion!

Take a torch and a kneeling pad bud when your buying older cars, I bought a combo van last year, about an 07,looked OK underneath, when I got it back opened the bonnet and the strut top, inner wing was all gone, remember buying a vauxhall royal (!) the bonnet was actually supporting the inner wing from falling in, I opened the bonnet, the leg moved and you couldn't shut the bonnet again.
