We got burned on our first car (Honda CRV MK2). Advisory free MOT and said advisories on previous MOT had been sorted. Took car on test drive (my friend drove it) but noticed a whistling noise and dealer said it was either sunroof or roof bars. Paid a non refundable £250 deposit as this covered for a service and MOT in case we backed out on buying it. two days later we were back to pay the difference (full asking price) insurance sorted,6 month road tax. Drove it all the way back from Burnley to South Manchester but still the whistling. Took it to an independent Honda specialist just 10 days after picking it up to find it would have failed on a seized calliper,rear discs (scored) rear pads (1.5mm) a leaking front strut and the drop links from the previous MOT hadn’t been done. It also had a loose bolt on the middle exhaust. Since then,we racked up a bill of over £3,000 in repairs. Ok things like aircon Condenser, compressor and regas is a luxury, but it’s also had a new CAT,2x o2 sensors, third gear sensor, 4x tyres. We get a new car next week (Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross) but can’t help feeling sad getting rid of our first car. It’s taken us to places we never would have thought of visiting

Never mind the MOT station, I want to know how a 2011 car subframe is that rusty!! Was it parked in the North Sea or something?
@john1v67 ай бұрын
Exactly. Both my car and my wife's are over 10 years old and totally solid underneath - also both on Scottish (Edinburgh) plates too I might add. Mind you their service histories showed they'd hardly spent any significant time up there and I did inspect them both before purchase - as I would do with any used car. Plates alone don't always tell the full story though. Many moons ago I used to get company cars from VW registered straight off the boat with Oxford plates (VW UK HQ was (is) in Milton Keynes). Mine never went anywhere near there while I had it.

And the MOT tester of the year goes to......
@glenjones69807 ай бұрын
MOT testing standards vary so much a test pass is almost worthless in some ways. I had a fail one year on n/s brake pipes from front to back and no advisories, the garage delayed the retest so it had to have a full test 12 days later and they failed the pipes on the entire O/S. So from no advisory to fail in 12 days and it never even left their forecourt. That was the first and last time I ever went there.

Shame we didn't see what was missing as the camera was too low. Great content and video as always. Glad you sold 3 great cars.

Lesson learnt. Check all underneath of car before starting other work. Better safe than sorry .

And before buy lol. I agree the history of a car is underneath.

Very well done on this guys, how does a thirteen year old car get into that amount of rust! I have seen forty year old cars with less than half the problems shown here, and I am sure many will have seen far older ones with less corrosion!

Take a torch and a kneeling pad bud when your buying older cars, I bought a combo van last year, about an 07,looked OK underneath, when I got it back opened the bonnet and the strut top, inner wing was all gone, remember buying a vauxhall royal (!) the bonnet was actually supporting the inner wing from falling in, I opened the bonnet, the leg moved and you couldn't shut the bonnet again.

I was a mot tester and finally closed up as some people and some dealers were just wanting a pass ticket so it was legal, it appeared they were not interested in safety. I drive lorries now.

James thanks fake mot definitely wud never past mot 👍

That MOT station definitely. I think its one of those places that if you pay extra then they look less if you know what I mean. Alot of towns and cities definitely have one dodgy MOT station. They rarely get reported unfortunately

My betting is the car spent a lot of time by the coast causing excess rust
