You should draw a vacuum on the power steering reservoir any time you replace something in the system. It'll pull every bit of air out before you ever start the engine. No noise, no pump damage from running without oil til it bleeds the air.

Nice exhaust on the Torino sounds good . Barn finds aren’t to hard to find a run across quite a few here in Montana , Wyoming and Idaho the problem is everyone who has one watches these auctions like Mecum and goes do you know how much this is worth? I’ve had an eye an a sweet 50 Chevy like you just got no rust someone hot rodded it probably late 50s early 60s been in a field by me for at least 10 years and the guy wants a fortune for it and will need a least 15K to get it on the road . I guess we just keep looking and making offers. Thanks for sharing

That 4 Dr Torino looks like my grandmother's car. SERIOUSLY. Although hers was green. Same modest hubcaps, same engine. Back in those days, it wasn't unusual for a car to have quite a few generations of muffler. So glad for the mufflers of today which corrode very little. The other problem with that era of Ford.. well there are two: 1. Holes is the floorboards/trunk. 2. That transmission will have issues at about 100K miles (before you you are doing speed trials all the time). Good to see one still on the road. And I still would be sweet for a 2 door version of that car.

Ford Torino! Brings me back to summer of '78 right after HS graduation. I went to work for my brothers excavating company but I needed a car to get to work. My other brother had a Ford Torino that he had left in NYC at a friends house while he flew out to Japan for a trip. The friends wife went into labor while the car was there and since it was the car closest to the end of the driveway, he took his wife in it to the hospital. NYC has got lots of folks driving crazy and when the friend stopped at a red light, a drunk driver plowed into the back of it and put that trunk into the backseat. Yet the car still drove. In fact it drove them to the hospital and then still drove 2 hours to home and then I got to use it for the summer as my go to work car, and go to the job site in the woods clearing for a new road. Worked fine and made for a fun beater car for the summer. 302 power... aah memories.

Sometimes, the only way I can get that pump to be quiet is to cycle the steering with the motor off about 2 dozen times lock to lock with the front end in the air. It's like the engineer couldn't find the right spot for the flow through on the box and made it work. Keep the old girl running as long as you can.

I like Hadley’s attitude. I’ve always thought a big sedan or wagon from the 30’s-50’s would be a fun project base for a DIY electric conversion. They generally have more than enough room to put in cheaper non-EV specific batteries, and they didn’t have crap for HP or torque to begin with, so by balancing the weight added by the batteries vs what you remove with the old engine and transmission, and putting in motor that gives you at least a bit more power than stock you should have something that doesn’t drive to badly. Not going to get crazy range without going all out on the batteries since the cars are so heavy, but you should be able to get something with enough juice for running around town or shorter commutes without exploding the budget.

When removing tie rod ends and hitting them with a hammer to pop them loose I see you usually use your green dead blow ball peen hammer. I knew guys in an alignment shop and they didn't like using a dead blow ball peen hammer, they said a regular wooden handle ball peen works better. It provides more of an initial shock which is what you want to knock loose tie rod ends. Give it a try and see if it works!
