FAQ - thanks for all the questions - here's my effort to answer them! 1) Does it stop vultures - yes, they spawn on the ground to start, and so are blocked by this same approach 2) Does it stop screamers - not with this configuration - screamers can spawn much further out - quick testing was at least 75 to 80m from the central point. Testing with a 90x90 area covered in blocks, it did successfully prevent a screamer from spawning (console log shows screamer spawn failed). Note that I have not tested the upper range for screamer spawn distance though. 3) Does it work for bedrock/going up really high - Yes, stay within the 5x5 area and it doesn't matter how high or low you go. See test at 14:30 where I tried a small version of this, but I've also tested bedrock post video. 4) What blocks can I use - player blocks obviously, frames, wood, cobble, concrete, steel. Can't use terrain blocks like destroyed stone, stone, or dirt, zombies will spawn on those. I did try with crops (corn) and that seemed to work, however this was the poi version not naturally planed, so that could be bad info - use with caution.

@@CautiousPancake additionally, when picking where to spawn it picks the north/south east/west first then chooses the highest elevation blocks. This stops zombies from spawning in caves/mines or inside houses since some pois have a concrete variation that allowed zombies to spawn. This isn’t super useful for just placing the initial structure unless the area has a lot of hills and you can’t be sure if you filled it all in you can instead make Pillers and a flat roof filled in 30-50m out from the standing block (pixel circle generators are great for this) and zombies will not spawn on the terrain blocks below the roof Edit: if the elevation thing doesn’t make sense I did post a video like 3-4 years ago on the spawning and it’s right at the end like last 5 minutes where I was testing the roof blocking the spawns. It still works in 1.0 the same way as it does in that video

This is literally how mob farms in Minecraft work. You make everywhere non-spawnable except where you want them to spawn, and funnel them to whatever method you're using to kill them. Since Minecraft will only attempt to spawn if there are under X number of mobs in an area, and only spawns if there is a place to spawn, you have to move them off the spawning area and kill them efficiently so the game will spawn at almost every interval. I could see something similar working in 7dtd. I'm just not how 7dtd decides whether to spawn a mob. In MC, it's a measure of how much *potentially* spawnable area exists, so if you've got 10,000 potentially spawnable blocks and only 10 that are actually spawnable, you'll have far more spawns than if you were on an island of 100 potentially spawnable blocks and 10 actually spawnable. Giving less spawnable area in 7dtd might just mean fewer spawns. I don't know if you could spawn zombies right on your traps, but assuming you can force spawns in a set area, you could definitely make your traps the path of least resistance from the spawnable area to you.

This is how I did this years ago when the ocean base was popular on KZbin. Turns out, the mechanic picks its coordinate 30-50 blocks away and then attempts to spawn on the highest elevation block. Because the ocean had water blocks, it would attempt to spawn on top of the water and water has CanSpawn set to false so they don’t spawn. Regular zombies don’t spawn this way, which is why in JaWoodles ocean base video (prolly 3 years old now) a zombie had spawned regularly Under the water on the terrain blocks and joined the horde after spawning.

Very thorough as usual CP! Thank you. Looking to the next question your video should create, my guess is that a screamer (as your answers to questions cover) will spawn, but the spawn distance for the horde that a screamer will summon is the same as the player's horde night distance that you demonstrate in this video. That should mean screamers can spawn around a fabrication base when you light campfires/forges/etc. BUT, if you cover the ground with blocks as you recommend in this video AND account for a margin OUTSIDE the base walls. Then, when the screamers come in, they can bang on the walls and summon their horde - but nothing should be summoned b/c there are no available spawn-capable blocks for those zeds. Again, this is a fantastic video! Thank you for taking that kind of time to isolate the spawn points.

Frankly, if you're going to that extend to make something like this, you might as well also use a proper Circle Generator for Minecraft or so. Edit: Looking at one, you can see that the "start" is always very wide. For a Radius 51 Circle, you basically start with 7 blocks towards the side, then on in is 5 blocks long, the next two in are each 3 blocks long.

Yeah, agreed it's easy to change, especially if they allow further out spawns, the number of blocks needed to defend it goes up fast! Spawning on player blocks I feel they won't do so that you don't accidentally get zombies inside your base.

Based on the comments you should make a video on dealing the screamers. Pseudo Posse has one but you can never have too many videos. Personally I just use a hatch in the doorway of my home base where I do all my crafting. I’ll be on second floor with no path to me (ladder you need to jump to). When I hear a screamer I’ll hop down to the first floor and defend the base from the hatch. I’m generally fast enough to prevent them from calling in a horde. Minor annoyance at worst, something to break the monotony of crafting and organizing loot at best. Honestly surprised so many people hate fighting all the zombies in their zombie fighting game.
@JohnTheMutt9 күн бұрын
Great test Cautious! I'm guessing the horizontal worked for vultures as well since they didn't spawn in either? Perhaps they also require a natural terrain requirement but simply spawn at elevation... I remember in older alphas when I had very large and spread out bases that sometimes the zombies would spawn in my garden...but it was using the old system with soil, etc... I've not tested that with farm plots. Once again, thanks for all the hard work and testing you do and sharing it. :D

I believe they spawn between a 25 -radius circle, and a 50-radius circle from the player position. And, as someone else mentioned, a 'minecraft circle generator' (shows you how to make a 'circle' with square blocks) could be useful. Back several versions ago, I actually did this on the Navezgane map. In the south desert, there's a road intersection that is pretty flat. I ran there, chopping every tree I could. Planted the tree seeds nearby, made frames, and started making the 25 and 50 circles on the ground and filling in between them. I was easily able to make it before the first horde night. As you said, it's possible, but not practical: It keeps you safe from the horde, which is the ultimate goal of the game, but it removes the entire point of the game, which is to *fight* the zombies. It's a tactic that would be useful in 'real life', but sucks the fun away in games. :-)

I've seen sooo soo many afk bases to farm exp but oddly the people making the videos talking about the bass usely forget to let players kmow how much of each resorce,perks items and so on to make the base only to find out later through base the content makers are bragging about they made in creative mode and think new,casual and normal player have the time or resorces to make the bases😂 its easy to maks afk or exp farm base bass that is a massive complex if you can spawn resorces whenever you can. People need to relise to time and resocrese to make late game exp horde nigh farm bases.

Why won't zombies spawn on player blocks? Is that just a design decision they made?
@pilkington60799 күн бұрын
Yes, imagine you build a base and while ur away zombies spawn inside. Or you're just the perfect distance from your base and half of horde night spawns in it. They need a way to get to you. So they'd make one... From the inside out.
@CautiousPancake9 күн бұрын
That's my understanding as well, it was a design decision so that zombies don't spawn inside your base defences, which would be frustrating! Given how many blocks you need to do this, I think this is a fair approach!
@superezbz9 күн бұрын
Pretty boring base, but excellent information. I might use this to "control" where my zombies spawn so I can funnel them exactly where I want them.
@CautiousPancake9 күн бұрын
Agreed Ezbz - don't think I'll be building this in game any time soon, but it could come in handy to know at some point!
@WitBlaed9 күн бұрын
fascinating. There are far more material efficient ways to afk the horde. This looks like a lot of work to build for no reason.
@CautiousPancake9 күн бұрын
Oh absolutely - I've definitely built easier AFK bases, but this is the only one that actually prevents zombie spawning rather than managing the zombies once spawned - thought it was an interesting alternate mechanic to dig into.
@WitBlaed7 күн бұрын
@@CautiousPancake It could be useful information to know if you planned to build a gigantic facility to play in. That you could accidentally prevent the horde spawning is not something I ever even considered. So good info either way! :)

Does this only work for horde night? or do normal spawns have different rules?
@CautiousPancake6 күн бұрын
Normal spawns have different rules yes. Having said that, while messing around with this base post video, I don't recall ever seeing a normal zombie spawn, so it's possible this blocks them as well! Throw in a land claim at the middle to be even more protected :)

Would have liked to see if you went to bedrock, if it'd still work. From the video, it should... still... I have my doubts.
@CautiousPancake9 күн бұрын
Good question - and yes, it works for bedrock - if you dig straight down and stay in the 5x5 area, it works exactly the same - will add this to a FAQ pinned comment :)

How does that work against Screamers?
@fletchslade57189 күн бұрын
This was my thought as well.
@CautiousPancake9 күн бұрын
A did a quick test and this will stop screamers from spawning if you go out bigger - I had screamers in the 70-80 range so covered 180x180 and screamers failed to spawn! But man that would be a lot of blocks in a real game :D

Oooooorrr, now this is just an idea because ei know little about the zombie AI and stuff, just build a nerd pole up to skybox? Wouldn't everything be out of range at that point? No need for all this nonsense
@CautiousPancake9 күн бұрын
If you just nerd pole up without doing this, the zombies will still spawn in the normal range, then run in and destroy the bottom of the pole :) - see test at 14:30
@rickywood88058 күн бұрын
@@CautiousPancake but isn't the spawn range 30-50 blocks? And you can nerd pole up like 80-100? I'll take your word for it of course, you are the pro after all I'm just a Newby console peasant 😂

Don’t get your logic guy ????? So you want a base they can get you then ???? I’m the o.g inventor of that concept also I seen floating bases now Ben doing that also before anyone else.
