I thought I cheesed them by keeping them all in a falling animation but they in fact started digging on the bottom, even though they fell through the first two concrete layers! Crazy! 😊

I got around that by making my trench 4 deep and only using the storage blocks for entryways, adding them just on the top layer and not all the way down. They avoid the storage blocks and go straight into the trench. I've combined this with a drop ramp that paths them up high and bottlenecks them. It's pretty effective.

@@CautiousPancake So I ended up using this block for my killing corridor, placing it around the tower walls. Two blocks wide, three blocks deep, all filled. During horde night I got mixed results as it seems a handful of zombies did went over the blocks to attack the walls. Now I wonder if the "opening" needs to be at same level as the blocks like you show in the video, since my opening route was the corridor path itself several blocks above. Another interesting thing I noticed, though I cant confirm it, in both a screamer horde and horde night, a handful of zombies ended up under the bookshelf blocks after falling from the corridor, and started beating the blocks from inside. Maybe they clipped somehow.

By the way CP, I used the Storage Cube for the forcefield but it ended up not working so well for some reason. Sometimes the zombies ended up walking across the barrier and smacking the wall behind the barrier. Also, it is worth mentioning that there is a glitch with this block. When the zombies walk over the block ( particularly screamers ) they have a chance to fall and glitch into the block and just repeatedly spin in circles like they are in mid air or something. The zombies don't seem to attack the blocks, but they just sit there. I found this kind of funny. (This could also be potentially used for a base idea maybe?)

@CautiousPancake I think block has been fixed by devs. Before I get any hate, I did watch the video from start to finish MULTIPLE times. I just built a complete horde base using a 4 wide 4 deep trench with this block filling the entire trench (4 wide & 4 deep with holes up). I couldn't say it worked or failed on horde night because I was a bit busy killing things (so I assume it worked as intended or maybe because zombie pathing because I was 10 meters above ground level), however the next morning I literally watched 2 Radiated Screamers run long wise down these blocks towards me. It does seem to work somewhat on "Normal" zombies but not so much on Radiated. Also I did notice Zombies falling from height onto these blocks and getting embedded within the blocks. This happened numerous times from the horde night and had to use molotovs to eventually kill them since I could not see them to shoot them as they were inside the blocks. So even though blocks fill the entire space, zombies falling onto them from height can get embedded into the blocks. I do enjoy the videos and look forward to more.

@@CautiousPancake No problem. I spent a good bit of time removing the blocks and went back to my "Normal" build which is putting a 3 block high fence using bars and small poles around the pit. Bars on bottom and top with small poles in the middle here and there to allow me somewhat clear vision/shooting from ground level. It works mostly with an occasional zombie beating on a few blocks. However, I have noticed with several blocks that zombies will fall through blocks until they hit actual terrain. At which point they seem to be in crawl mode and beat on blocks around them either digging out under the block in question or becoming land sharks glitching through blocks laterally. My only suggestion for this is to only use 1 block layer as the floor or ground above the terrain blocks. It doesn't fix the problem but it does make it easier to find and kill the embedded zombies as walking near the embedded zombies cause them to pop out of the ground.

His method DOES NOT work. I've tried it in multiple ways on my simple horde base. His video is a simple pathing video on a flat ground. I'm not sure if I understand forcefield block behavior yet enough to explain very well, but I just tried replacing the steps on the side of your Pit 32 base with these storage cubes (openings facing up of course) in that 1-2-3-2-1 "v shaped" pattern like is in the video, leaving the appropriate gap between the edge and middle step. 2 screamers spawned while I was on top of the base, and they ran right over and jumped across to the bottom step no problem. I'm assuming I just got unlucky with the timing and my height, and they would have done the same regardless of the steps being a forcefield or not, as the base is designed to make them jump down to your fighting level. But I've learned a valuable lesson that just because the steps are forcefields doesnt mean zombies cant walk on um lol. Though I do wonder if they would have jumped across a 2-block wide air gap to the bottom step if I left if that far...
@CautiousPancake2 ай бұрын
For the pit32 I'm not sure these will work as well, since the testing showed that 1 deep they didn't work as well as expected. For the side of that base I'd stick to some of the original forcefield blocks to be safe!

Hey. I still love this design. Found a possible glitch though. When falling it appears Zombies will go straight through the block and fall to the bottom. Mayhem ensues as they try to dig out. I have a 12-block drop base set up and they fall through and f-up my horde night :)

@CautiousPancake - Hi. I used your "Storage Cube" shape blocks to make a forced pathfinding forcefield in 7D2D v1.1. It works, but I did notice a flaw that I had to work around. I don't know if the other suggested shaped blocks have this same flaw or not. I would have to test it out when I get some time. So the flaw is that zombies can fall inside the "Storage Cube" shape blocks and get stuck inside. How does this happen? Here are some things that will cause zombies to fall inside the blocks. a.) Putting spike traps on top of the "Storage Cube" shape blocks. When I did this, the zombies were still following the forced path and taking damage along the way, but a lot of zombies were also falling inside the "Storage Cube" shape blocks as a result. b.) Zombies falling from stairs or a ladder or other platform. Zombies that fall onto the "Storage Cube" shape blocks will often end up inside the blocks. c.) A Robotic Sledge that knocks zombies onto the "Storage Cube" shape blocks often results in the zombies getting stuck inside the blocks. // So my solution for this is to not use spike traps, don't put stairs or ladders or platforms near the "Storage Cube" shape blocks, and to point the Robotic Sledge away from the "Storage Cube" shape blocks. // Thank you for your very helpful tutorial though. I may end up trying the other blocks that you suggested. // PS - How do I @ someone on KZbin comments? I @'d you but it doesn't work.

Thanks Cautious Pancake! This is good info. I used your A21 forcefield video to achieve some success with the concept on my A21 base and was thinking to do something similar in v1.0. But this new storage block is way better than what I had going on in A21 where ragdolled zombies would just sail through the gap (I used the arch) and I had to have turrets in the trench to deal with those. Now no trench turrets are required! Question though, have you done any testing with trenches wider than 2 blocks? I was thinking 4 blocks wide might be the way to go for my new base idea to better protect the electric fence posts at ground level and haven't done any testing of my own yet. Or maybe even wider. I want to protect the fence posts and keep the zombies away from the base. They will have a path, another catwalk-type thing. Thanks!

Forcefields are often used to protect either walls or base supports, or if you've got a nice farm to keep them out of there etc. It's also good for entrances for vehicles so that you can drive in and the zombies will not follow and will go to where you direct them. So often you can do your whole base. The glitch seems to be after a ragdoll, and the pathing seems to be on higher zombie counts the z's forget to path correctly when the game gets more load. Haven't pinned it down fully, but definitely looking into it! Sorry that it's not working as well as I thought it was!

That was me explaining how you need to also break line of sight - the forcefield is to protect areas you want to keep the zombies away from, not completely replace a base.

Nice find. The bumpiness indicates that the Fun Pimps use the actual block geometry for their inverse kinematics. If they ever fix that bug, most force fields will stop working.
@CautiousPancake3 ай бұрын
Yeah feels like their approach needs to be a bit smarter or a bit dumber lol. But it works for most things so I don't see them doing drastic changes, unless it gets in the way of bandits or something.
@Oktokolo3 ай бұрын
@@CautiousPancake They need to derive collision meshes from their detailed shape meshes and the collision meshes should likely be different for projectiles and actors because it's cool to be able to shoot through stuff, but it's not cool to have a bumpy ride or to have zombies getting stuck. Not sure, whether there is also some performance to gain there. Who knows, how much the zombies think about holes in the ground... But yeah: Bandits likely come first.

Hey man gotta ask how does it work for a 71x71 base?
@CautiousPancake2 ай бұрын
That's a big base! It should work ok, although there's some issues with this, with bigger hordes the zombies will sometimes run over it. I think it's when the new zombie spawn logic to save fps kicks in. 😟
@jonathanturull85082 ай бұрын
@CautiousPancake that's understandable so can't I just make my walls so thick they have to run straight to the front door? Like 7 steel blocks thick all around? I'm trying to find a workable big castle style horde base. 7 I'm trying to make the most of the 71 block size for land claim blocks on console.😅 I do not like compact builds much. Which is why I'm wanting to coax them all to come my direction but have to choose between a long but thick wall or a single big door. I probably am cutting my base size down but my final measurements aren't set in stone yet.
@CautiousPancake2 ай бұрын
@@jonathanturull8508 Ah fair enough - the one tip I'd give is to consider that they'll always want to get to your height first, so if you raise your fighting platform off the ground, and only provide on path up to you, they'll always want to go that way and will generally leave your wall alone - especially if your height is > 11 blocks as per my rage mode rule.

What if... you put pillar on the force field and have your base over/above it....? 😊

As long as you still give them a path to you it'll be ok. If you don't they'll probably just smash the pillar.

We'll see! Most of the ones I found in Alpha 20 were not patched in alpha21 Only now in 1.0 have there been some. The paint lines would be from the change they did to road paint to make it disappear when you build on top I guess. So generally they've left these alone. Just depends if they think this one is worse than all the others.

They have to keep the game interesting and challenging but honestly there are other factors that I feel would be more important for them to change or tinker with. They could have a better balance of making certain things easier on the players that they want easy while also working on the things they want more difficult to create a challenge. Just a couple hours ago when I was playing I thought it would be amazing if there was a way to craft specific gun turrets that locked on to specific zombie types. I only craft turrets for the roof for those annoying vultures that want to steal my fries 😤 and that's it. I wish the turrets had more options to play with since they're my least favorite out of the electrical items or maybe I'm just a dodo and don't utilize them well enough 🤷♀️ Quick 1 minute edit: I forgot to mention it was cop zombies I wish it would only target. They're my most annoying no matter what I do. I have safe guards in place but they still drive me crazy on my solo play game

@DrSnipzz2 ай бұрын
I've tested them too. This video isn't designed for horde night bases because those bases are built on pillars not flat on the ground like in his demonstration. Even building the storage blocks 2 wide and 4 down around each pillar, the zombies still walked on the storage blocks and began to attack my pillars even though there is a simple easy path for the zombies to take. Most of them do but some randomly don't

Just more digging and blocks - you absolutely can though
@DrSnipzz2 ай бұрын
This doesn't work because 99% of horde bases need pillars and the moment you have pillars, the zombies will attack the pillars rather than taking the designed path. I even tested your storage blocks around the pillars, 2 wide 4 down and the zombies still jump on the storage blocks and hit the pillar when their is a staircase with centered polls that connect to my base

you should try to combine this zombie forcefield with a pit base.. if you look at my TURD IN THE HOLE bases i used that were supported at the sides, floating bases in pits, i used to have just and open top of pit so they jump down in any part of the pit but it makes it annoying cos they all fall in different directions.. im thinking a forcefield and pit drop base could line all the zombies up so they fall directly where your weapon is pointing?

Haha parkour for the win! For your base you might be able to put one of the road paint blocks I listed in the alternative section on top of the curved cube to stop yourself falling through?
@cynic55813 ай бұрын
So could this be used around things to prevent zombies from destroying them once they are in destroy everything mode? I thinking of use case where you could put this around a dropper base and not make it so tall. On that note the zombie struggle to run on these. Could you make a dropper base but position yourself at the bottom. Drop the zombies on these blocks so its easy to shoot them when they land on them and struggle to move off them.
@CautiousPancake3 ай бұрын
You can definitely use them around things you want to protect for a lower base. Before I figured out the 11-block rage mode rule, I used forcefields a lot to try and protect the supports and main base components. And yes, this would allow you to make the base lower. Note though that the zombies will probably rage against something in that case - either the blocks around the forcefield, or the forcefield itself (or sometimes a nearbly poi or even a cactus). So your forcefield may take some damage, but that's better than the base support! As for dropping the zombies onto the forcefield on purpose, that's not something I've tried to be honest - it seems like it would be hard to line up the shots, but it's also crazy enough to work! Worth trying at some point :)
@tigrecito483 ай бұрын
does the forcefield only work if its a drop into a trench they cant get out of? if it has a way out they no longer see it as a non pathable trench? cos i remember trying to do a forcefield over a drop into the ocean and it didnt stop them they just walked straight over

Yeah sorry about that - I tried to add some text to that section to help out returning players. In short they are used to prevent zombies from getting into an area you don't want them to go, except through the one path that you provide, while also allowing the player to cross over at any point. That way you can enter an exit the area from any direction, but the zombies are forced down a specific path. this allows you to surround anything you want to protect - be that crops, vehicle parking, equipment storage or your base with a forcefield, and the zombies will only try and come in through the path you leave them - which means you can then control the path how you want - either with traps, or barriers, or a zombie dropper. Hope that helps!
