We just got the Moccamaster after more than 6 years of Bonavita. The Bonavita was good coffee and we always received compliments when serving coffee. But I have always wanted the Moccamaster. Warning to new machine owners…..you Must Always adjust your bean grind and weight used for any machine. I call it “dialing in” for the best flavour. Every machine is different and you most definitely need to experiment until you find that perfect taste. Even though the Bonavita is a close second to the Moccamaster in functionality, the Moccamaster did not want the same dosing of coffee. Took me about a week to land on the perfect grind size and weight of grounds used with our preferred beans. Now my Moccamaster is the clear winner for full flavour, non acidic, non sour, lovely aftertaste coffee. It it is so much quieter and quicker than the Bonavita. Thanks for the review….fun to watch.

Most people are looking for confirmation bias - justification for why they purchased what they did. It all comes down to working with the machine, any machine, to get the brew you like. You have to mess with the ratios of coffee, to water, to saturation & temp and grind. Heck, if you're going to use creamers, honey, sugar and other spices it becomes infinitely complex. Everybody has a different preference for taste. You both loved the weaker Mr. Coffee brew - I love it too. When I have the time, I happen to love the taste of percolator coffee when mixed to the ratios that I've come up with. I also have a french press, a pour over, a couple of Bunns, a Nespresso, two or three Keurigs, a Moka/Muka pot, a Mr. Coffee five cup machine, a giant Ball canning jar for cold brews, etc. - all used with a variety of coffees and grinds (I have a Bunn commercial grinder that I bought used). I love them all, but I use the brewer that's the easiest and most consistent - my 5 cup Mr. Coffee that I have at work and my Bunn. The best coffee maker I ever had, before it broke, was the free coffee maker from Gevalia, a reward for joining their "Coffee of the Month" club. (I loved that membership. It exposed me to so many different flavors - and learning journeys.) It was plain, white and nondescript. It was awesome. Simply put, find a coffee maker with the features you want, and learn to use it well. p.s. I noticed that for both non-filtered coffee makers, you mentioned the acidity. Adding any type of paper filter soaks up the oils and changes the flavor.

Very important to note, the best coffee makers is all about revealing the best of the beans you put in. Especially the Moccamaster, if you put bad beans in or the wrong grind size, it will give you exactly what you put in: bad coffee, or in the case of wrong grind size, an especially bitter or sour taste. For those people that use pre-ground beans, a cheap coffee maker will taste much better.

The more i've gotten into espresso over coffee, the more i agree. Grind size and bean do most of the work. thanks for the comment :)

I ended up here looking for videos about the Moccamaster, trying to figure out why people like this thing. For this much money you’d think it would at least be able to distribute water over the grounds evenly. So many videos are saying that you need to stir the grounds while it blooms, or leave the carafe out for the first few minutes…. I mean I might as well be doing a pour over at that point. I guess people just like the way it looks.

I have a Moccamaster and got one for my parents because they keep replacing the cheap (But overpriced) drip machine they have instead of buying a better one. It’s reliable and so simple to use, so it’s great for them, and the coffee is great.

You guys were absolutely fantastic!!! You really saved my from making another mistake about coffee makers! I've been living my Bonavita for some 10 years! I thought maybe there is something out there with a larger capacity! However, I agree with everything you said! I've tried the Ninja and Bunn Heat & Brew, for instance, and I felt the same about them! A tad bitter! You're fabulous for doing this! I was going to try the Redline, but not now! Love my Bonavita!!!

a tad bitter usually means slightly over extracted, which can be influenced by grind coarseness. i have a moccamaster and am just now, after 8 brews, getting everything dialed in to coffee nirvana. also, an 18-1 ratio could cause some bitterness compared with technivorm's recommended 16-1 ratio, which is what i use. i also roast my own beans, so am pretty familiar with what to expect. for 20+ years before the moccamaster, i was brewing using a nicro double pot on stovetop, which of course is immersion with agitation, but control over time and temperature. the moccamaster delivers a cleaner cup and more flavor, besides being a comparative breeze for cleanup.

Thank you for doing this video! I wish more reviewers would include blinded testing in their comparisons, since confirmation bias is so strong and blinding is a great way to tease out and notice smaller differences. I have a Technivorm and it makes great coffee, so I was immediately rushing to justify why it did poorly... Beyond the power outage you mentioned, there were a few details missing that I think could improve the test if you were to do it again, in my opinion. 1. You specified that you used the same by-weight ratio of coffee to water, but didn't specify how much water was used, so I'm guessing you either made a full batch on each or as little as possible on each? doesn't have to be the same between all of them, but it'd be nice to know since its a variable that interacts with my other main point: grind size. 2. You didn't specify how you ground the coffee for each. You have B-roll of a Bodum electric burr grinder and the bag of whole beans, so it's clear that it was fresh ground, but you don't say whether the same settings were used for all the brewers. Grind size is ideally the only variable the user controls with these machines, and it interacts with brew volume, water flow rate, and water temperature, which are different for each of these machines. So for a fair comparison we should assume that the user will adjust the grind to be as good as possible per machine. This could be done by doing unblinded taste tests on each machine one at a time to dial in the grind, and then comparing each at their own optimal grind setting during the blinded tests.

valid feedback and much appreciated! We used 18:1 for the water to coffee ratio in these tests. In terms of grind, we were just learning here so we didn't adjust that variable other than keeping it consistent for all machines with the ratio.
@MichaelFortner1989
@MichaelFortner1989 Жыл бұрын
@@DannyPops Thanks! I understood the 18:1 ratio, but my point was that the absolute volume also interacts with the grind size and other variables so it's worth specifying and maybe also keeping the same as a test condition. The more coffee grounds in the bed, the more resistance there is to water filtering through, and since it's the same ratio there's more water, so each particle would be exposed to water for longer and will be more extracted. To keep extraction in the ideal range you'd grind courser as volume increases.

Yeah, I bought a Moccamaster Cup One last year because I just felt like splurging and treating myself. It made worse-tasting coffee than my beloved Clever Dripper, and even worse than my $12 Black and Decker maker. Just bitter bitter bitter all day. At that price I had to return it. Today the Clever Dripper rules all coffee in my house. I recommend trying it if you like French Press, but hate the cleanup.

Thank you. Enjoyed both coffee videos. Made it to the end. Just ordered an Aeropress a few days back. Looks very versatile. Might try it with yerba mate as well. You might be interested in this: the water for brewing yerba mate is supposed to be 170° or lower. Higher temperatures bring out the bitterness I wonder if fluctuations or variations in temperatures within and among the machines are affecting the coffee bitterness.

It would be interesting to see a comparison of coffee vs yerba-maté. Even better, a shootout between coffee and all the other contenders for a preferred morning wake-up beverage. Especially the differences in effects. Differences in taste are one thing, differences in how you feel another. I find yerba mate to be better than coffee. There's more mood elevation. It might be worth doing just coffee vs yerba mate, or a separate shootout including other wake-up drinks. It seems more focused and clear to just do the one-to-one comparison. Doing too many at once kind of complicates it, though maybe it could be fine too. The most interesting comparison, for me, is with yerba mate, especially the differences in effects, what they do for your state of mind and your day.

Also, I feel that Danny was slightly going along the feedback on her, and influenced his review. Yes. I own a Moccamaster. It's a great reliable machine, but looking for an alternative for the office.

My guess is temp. Temperature is way too high for the coffee you're brewing (medium dark?). This is based on wht you said about electricity problems and you like the mr coffee n bonavita brew. For diff reasons, those two are better for darker roast. Having said that, idk, with this kind of testing there are so much variables comes to play.

I'm glad I made it to the end of the video because the do-over of the Moccamaster was a little more uplifting, considering my new Moccamaster just made it to my doorstep yesterday morning via FedEx. Being that it's still in the box, and after watching your results the first time I started to experience a little buyers remorse. Considering it is a $350 coffee maker that is supposed to make better coffee than anything sold at a Walmart, I do have thirty days to send it back if my results are anything like the results of your first test or worse. BTW, your coffee maker review was quite diverse and well done.

You made it to the end of the video! Wait! What is this? When did the moccamaster become a luxury item? It is the most basic standard coffe-maker in history. Well, I am a YEAR LATE HERE...... Sorry. I been Looking for "THAT COFFEE TASTE" that I found at a Hole In the Wall Breakfast Restaurant in Santa Cruz California. On the Way out, I asked the Proprietor who's COFFEE He was Brewing, and where he got the Coffee at. His answer was, "Right Across the Street" At the ( Santa Cruz Coffee Roasting). So I asked them If they knew what COFFEE it is that they were purchasing from them and they Didn't know??????? Kinda Stupid if ya ask Me. So I call the Santa Cruz Coffer place, NO Answer, I E Mailed them, Explained the Situation, and the OWNER of the SC Coffee Co told me it was a Blend, Told me the "2" COFFEES that they Blend for the Restaurant and the Amount they Blend. So I bought the COFFEES from them in the EXACT SAME AMOUNT's, Blended them...... And...... N O P E!!! To this Day, I have not been able to find that "TASTE" I had in that Restaurant???? I have tried Grinders, Burr, Blade etc, I've Tried to MIX and Match ALL KINDS Of Coffee's, Paying out a TON Of $$$$$ Attempting to Duplicate that TASTE. I just can't get it. I have been a FLAT BOTTOM BUNN COFFEE Maker Customer now for over 50 YEARS, I have tried a KRUUPS coffee Machine and it PUKED WATER ALL Over the Counter Top. Moccamaster is On my List, But I really don't think that that Machine is gonna get me "THAT TASTE"??? I don't know what to do to FIND THAT TASTE??? But we will be going back to that Restaurant to TRY Their COFFEE again, If I get that "SAME CUP/TASTE" I'll ask to Buy it right there on Site and see what they Say?? They didn't sell it over the Counter Last Year, So I don't know. If I buy it from them, BREW it at Home in my BUNN, and I "DON'T" Get that same Taste, I'll know one of 2 Things. I gotta mess with the Amount of Coffee I'am Using, Or Just BLOW it off and Live with what I got and Just be Happy. "IF" My BUNN "EVER" Crap's Out. I will Try the Moccamaster. IT Ain't CHEAP Tho. $329.00 For a PLAIN WHITE Color???? I don't know. But MR. Coffee winning the MATCH here. Strange for Sure???? I can buy a Mr. Coffee Machine for Under $50.00, How can that Be, a $50.00 Machine out Brew's a Near $400.00 Unit????? Come On Man..... You know the Thing???
