This monologue is brilliant. Its simultaneously two separate, but equally scathing criticisms from a one sided perspective. It’s odd to take out of context, the rest of the book is mostly from the characters that are being put down in this ‘blog post’. It is absolutely a parody, but still has a lot of truth in it. The rest of the book also has a ton of parody as well as truth. I would say it’s the opposite of centrists, in that it’s almost entirely extremism. Except for the chapter from the dog’s point of view, that one is just good. All in all, the book series as a whole is about the value of perception as a human. When the limits of our sensory organs are met and how our brains adapt or don’t to those situations or ideas. They are also entirely based on the ideas that it is a book, as in the narrative is always unreliable or skewed based on perception. The three most important characters in this book are the ‘realists’ and non of them are the character you’re quoting. Owen, TJ, and Molly the dog have the most important and visceral actions in the book. They spell out the ‘laws’ of the universe they inhabit better than any other character, but regardless only 2 of the 3 make it out alive.

I always thought this was a really interesting part in that book. Everything he says is pretty spot-on regarding learning self-sustaining skills and that disaster is always a possibility. But the character is hateful and bigoted against anyone who does not fall into his narrow view of usefulness. I would have liked to hear the opinion of the reader after the excerpt. Without his context it feels like he's just fully behind everything the character was saying with no analysis

You know that the author is laughing at preppers like the one described and saying that they're delusional, selfish and overall terrible human beings, don't you?. He's describing a Bad Guy and isn't being subtle about it. Does anyone think that this book is pro-prepper???. Not a rethorical question, I actually want to know if it's possible to missinterpret such a clear and simple message. I hope I'm mistaken and you are being ironic or something.

I've read almost everything from this author, I don't think he's being condescending. He's touched on prepping in a few other books as well.
