Let's be clear: Elvis inspired MANY other artists, not just MJ.
@scsu5085
@scsu5085 2 ай бұрын
Elvis even inspired artists who (unknowingly) were inspired by him. This is because of the ripple effect. For example, anyone who says they were inspired by the Beatles but not Elvis, don't realize that without Elvis, there were no beatles. And while it's true both Country Music and Blues preexisted Elvis, "he" was the one who blended them together to create his own unique blend that was later known as Rock & Roll. I'm hearing lots of amplified emphasis on Chuck Berry and de-emphasis of Elvis lately. This is unwarranted. Elvis & Chuck admired each other, but it was the public who made it some kind of competition. Elvis' music career was already in progress ( already recording at sun) when Chuck had his first chart hit. So they were more of contemporaries, than either of them already being established. Elvis even recorded a rock song before Chuck.

One of the ALL TIME BEST blues greats was BB King. He spoke at length about his connection with Elvis Presley in his autobiography and in famous interviews. BB KING spent A LOT OF TIME WITH ELVIS. Here is one important clip from BB's autobiography: BB King -- "Before Elvis we had Little Black Sambo, separate black restrooms and water fountains, and colored events that kept us away from the whites. Elvis Presley would attend events especially designated just for African-Americans. In June 1956, Elvis ignored Memphis's segregation ordinances by attending 'Colored Night' at the local fairgrounds amusement park. The following December, I was there as Elvis opened up almost unbreakable racial barriers by attending and supporting the segregated WDIA, the black radio station's annual fund-raising event 'for needy black children' at Memphis' Ellis Auditorium. I liked Elvis. I saw him as a fellow Mississippian. I was impressed by his sincerity. When Elvis came to the Goodwill Review (the WDIA fund raiser events of 1956 and 1957), Elvis did himself proud. The Goodwill Revues were important. The entire black community turned out. All the DJs carried on, putting on skits and presenting good music. I held no grudges because Elvis didn't steal any music from anyone. He just had his own interpretation of the music he'd grown up on, same is true for everyone. I think Elvis had integrity. If anyone says Elvis Presley was a racist then they don't know a thing about Elvis Presley or music history. Many nights after we finished our sets and I'd go up to his suite. I'd play Lucille (on Elvis' guitar) and sing with Elvis, or we'd take turns. It was his way of relaxing. I'll tell you a secret, we were the original Blues Brothers because that man Elvis knew more blues songs than most in the business - and after some nights it felt like we sang every one of them. Let me tell you the definitive truth about Elvis Presley and racism, with Elvis, there was not a single drop of racism in that man. And when I say that, believe me I should know." -- THE LEGENDARY BB KING.

@stevepomeroy-rockin-pa-realtor: 100% correct. Many people know the truth because they are facts. The sad and unfair thing is that it is Michael Jackson fans who write the same lies about Elvis Presley over and over again. Michael Jackson, the supposed angel in the Jackson world, was always jealous of Elvis Presley. That's why Jackson fans always spread lies about Elvis (or have no idea). That's a fact. Michael Jackson: "Why does everyone say Elvis is the king but no one says king to me"?

Glitter and gold jackets came from Liberace. According to Liberace, Elvis asked him if he would mind. As for moonwalking, it predated Michael and Elvis. In the 1940s dancers, such as The Nicholas Brothers, called it the Backslide. Elvis and Michael came up with their own styles. Everyone does.
@Mary-d5x6g

I lived then, Liberace had Elvis on his show when he was on the rise and did a comedy show. He told Elvis then he needed some flash with his act, but strangely enough he was already buying flash from Lansky Brothers in the height of Beale street where back performers got their stuff. For white people it was too flashy, Elvis loved it. And then when he got the jumpsuit Idea from Bill Belew the designer who said if you wear one piece you'll stop ripping out the seat of your pants, and with that the suits got crazier and more flamboyant thru Belew's designs.

Michael was inspired by Elvis, his fame, his music, his costumes, the way he held the crowds when performing, his costumes. There is nothing wrong with that, Michael liked the outfits and did his younger version of the same thing. Both were known for their dance moves on stage, Elvis's body just had to move to the music, he lived for it and Michael was a stage performer from day one, singing , dancing, enthralling the crowd. They both admired each other and entertained their generation. I think every musician hears something or sees something they love about a performance and learns from it.

I am 80, I lived it, Everybody copied Elvis that's what changed American culture. It wasn't only in dress it was in performance. Micheal Jackson even married Elvis daughter. Give me a break. This isn't intentional that's just the way it was. Elvis set the baseline for rock and roll stars and groups in general. This isn't the best one, the best video is 'Elvis Presley and Micheal Jackson/I got a feeling in My Body". Elvis was the wallpaper of society, he changed all music forever. Prince and all the stars pickup a lot from Elvis. It's what they saw from the 50's on. Elvis started it all, He was the baseline. No one tried to copy him he just was the most influential person in music. Elvis was called the King by media, he didn't like it and said often he was not a king of anything Jesus was. Micheal however gave himself the name "King of Pop". Micheal was born to sing and dance as was Elvis. Every big performer is influenced by someone or group. It is human and it is ok. Elvis was inspired by black artist, there is nothing wrong with it. They both were legends and we will never forget them. Thanks man.

@@Isla-g4x That’s not even close to the truth. Elvis worked with black musicians, and paid them three different ways (song rights, song residuals based on Elvis’ sales, and via credit on each album which boosted sales for original artists). He didn’t steal from them. Elvis insured that all of the black artist he worked with were paid considerably well and demanded that they would be treated with dignity and respect. Furthermore Elvis made sure black musicians were allowed into the venues and treated with the same respect that Elvis or he refused to perform there. You have no idea what you’re talking about.

Elvis inspired everyone that came after him. He even introdiuced the jacksons at one of his concerts ine night and encouraged them and the osmonds to use his designer, Bill Belew. Elvis got the idea for blingy outfits from the legendary gay pianist Liberace. It's a very flamboyant style. I grew up with MJ from my childhood in 80s. MJ was obsessed with Elvis while claimingnot to rate him. He felt he should be a King too, that the white man had come in and usurped a black king. I don't know how accurate the article was but MJ proclaimed himself king of pop. Elvis was bestowed with the title king, he didn't like it. So as a kid i thought MJ was the best, now I see it's Elvis. Some people have said Elvis was moonwalking in a live show in the 50s and in one of the films he apparently moonwalks to Mean Woman Blues. There is not one single artist that did not take inspiration from the ones that came before them. MJ was a student of music and entertainment, he openly paid homage to the greats. My generation listened to all genres regardless of race. That is how you expand your knowledge of things. Today it seems like people only want to listen to one genre which limits their knowledge and gives a false sense of how the music and performers evolved over time. Also the word “copy” is over used today. I grew up loving both MJ and EP and I never thought MJ was copying anyone. MJ and other artist took inspiration from previous acts and put their own spin on things to make it their own. MJ also was inspired by Gene Kelly, James Brown, Jackie Wilson, Fred Astaire, Sammy Davis Jr. , Bob Fosse and many more. The MV Billie Jean was inspired by Fosses’ dance as the snake in The Little Prince. There is a video on KZbin that breaks it down to show the similarities. Beyoncé Single Ladies signature move was inspired by Fosse. MJ was quoted as saying to be great you have to study the greats (may not be the exact quote but you get my point). And Fosse was inspired by dancers that came before him. So instead of saying copy say inspired or influenced. Yes, Elvis fans have been aware of it for a very long time. On the one hand, it was a compliment to Elvis that Michael borrowed from Elvis; on the other hand, it was a insult because Michael refused to admit Elvis's influence on him. It wasn't just Michael though; Elvis was celebrated not only for being the G.O.A.T. of music he was also a style & cultural icon. As such, many other artists borrowed from Elvis as well in terms of dress, style, etc. Elvis was dubbed the 'King of Rock & Roll' by the media in 1956. Michael on the other hand insisted the media address him as 'King of Pop.' As for dance moves, Elvis was actually one of the first people to do the 'Moon Walk;' it just wasn't called that back then. Also, Michael had a choreographer who choreographed all of his dance moves whereas going back as early as 1954 Elvis's dance moves were all Elvis aside from a choreographer for some of his movies. Michael's choreographers were no doubt aware of Elvis's dance moves so it's not surprising that they had Michael use some of them (or a form of variation of them.) In all ways, it's clear that Michael heavily borrowed from Elvis; he just didn't want to admit it because it'd take away from his fans' beliefs that he was a 'unique, never before seen' cultural figure. Quite a few Elvis fans are also Michael Jackson fans so it's not that they begrudge Michael anything; we recognize Michael's own large talent; some just find it sad that Michael refused to acknowledge Elvis's influence on him.

Elvis was the first, but then it was the style. So MJ wasn’t use copying Elvis,he was just dressing in the style of the day.

Michael used to watch Jackie Wilson dancing from the wings. Jackie influenced many great performers including Elvis Presley, Van Morrison, James Brown and Michael Jackson. It's the greatest compliment.

Excellent reaction !!! But Oh there’s even more. Michael Jackson fans never really knew until after the passing of MJ and Elvis how important Elvis was to Michael's solo career. For whatever reason, MJ just was unable to admit while alive to his OBVIOUS influence and attraction to Elvis' stage presentation, clothing, and the way in which he carried himself ON and OFF stage. Elvis was THE FIRST MEGA STAR, and MJ went to school learning everything that he could. When Presley died, he hired much of Elvis' staff. UNDENIABLE EVIDENCE that the King of Pop was heavily influenced by the KING OF ROCK Elvis Presley. 1. MJ hired Elvis' best friend JOE ESPOSITO to manage his career, 2. MJ hired Elvis' CONCERT PROMOTER AEG Live co-CEO Paul Gongaware. 3. MJ hired Elvis' COSTUME DESIGNER Bill Belew (he created outfits for Elvis, the JACKSON 5, then MJ), 4. ... in addition to all the similar dance moves 5. ... in addition and arm and leg movements 6. ... in addition to their desire to create music videos... elaborate video representations of their songs 7. They BOTH lived in THEMED TWO STORY HOMES, Elvis called his escape home Graceland, while MJ decided to call his escape home Neverland. 8. MJ attempted to duplicate Elvis' success in Hollywood, and before his death had made a cameo appearance in Men in Black, and released Moonwalker in 1988, an anthology movie combined with a fantasy tale with Michael’s confrontation with a drug dealer, with limited theatrical release. 9. MJ even went into commercials... Elvis for Southern Maid donuts, and MJ for Pepsi, even though he hated Pepsi... but Elvis did a commercial so..... 10: Merchandise: MJ studied what Col Tom Parker did with Elvis' Merchandise. and a bonus # 11: Elvis had a few monkeys. His first once he purchased before moving into Graceland. Most famously, Elvis bought a pet monkey that he called Scatter who supposedly got drunk on Elvis' movie sets on a few occasions, and MJ bought a monkey and he named it Bubbles. Ok Last One I promise: MJ literally writes a song called... Heartbreak Hotel. Where Elvis co-created a musical art form, MJ largely built on one. Where Elvis changed sexual mores in the conservative wake of World War II (in a very rebellious way that threatened his life with imprisonment and death threats), Michael built on what Elvis began with more sexually suggestive choreographed dance moves. And where Elvis, expanding on James Dean's work, harnessed a burgeoning youth culture that rebelled against the social elites in the 50's youth revolution, the 60's sexual revolution, and the 50's and 60s civil rights movement, MJ drew more attention to it. MJ did it brilliantly ... but his cultural impact pales in comparison to Presley's'. Elvis came along at just the time the first identifiable generation of teenagers were about to substitute a drive for freedom for their parents' drive for security. 'With the change in values came a change in music and you had the impact of what became rock and roll'. 'Elvis stood at the cusp of that generational revolution. TV + YOUTH REVOLUTION ... and Elvis just ran away with the football. MJ really did copy as much as he could from Elvis, and that's OK... because MJ put HIS SPIN on it, but LET'S BE HONEST and call it straight down the line, MJ VERY CLEARLY was inspired by Elvis Presley and how he defined himself as a SUPERSTAR and legend. I respect Elvis and MJ for being the TWO KINGS of MUSIC that they are. Brilliantly fan-made Elvis' and Michael Jackson's "I Got A Feeling in my Body" studies some of Elvis' moves that MJ picked up on and included in his stage presentation. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3qVpaakqqhjpKc

MJ was a big Elvis fan. Elvis inspired so many. At the end of the day, there was only one Elvis and one MJ!
