One thing your guide failed to mention was that the warheads and the bunker was actually SOVIET not POLISH. Yes, the People's Republic of Poland was a country dependent on the Soviet Union, but it still had its own military of course. However, this complex was strictly property of the Soviet armed forces, was completely off-limits for Wojsko Polskie and its purpose was known to almost no one in Poland, including the Polish Military despite the fact it has always been located on soil officially belonging to Poland. There are no public records of Poland ever actually OWNING any nuclear weapons.
@adrianmatusik
@adrianmatusik 2 жыл бұрын
but the contract was structured so that when the conflict broke out, these warheads were handed over to the Polish military and Polish soldiers were trained to drop these bomb (air bombs) on western cities. And the official narrative was that the warheads were fired from Poland and retaliation should be directed at Poland.

That was fascinating. I was stationed in northern (then-West) Germany from '71-73, pulling security on nuclear-armed Nike Hercules sites. We were told that if war broke out, we had about an 8-minute life expectancy. If I understood the operations map correctly, now I know where that threat would be coming from.

@@rodneymiddleton1044 Honestly, we didn't have bunkers, per se. We Americans provided security for the warheads, but the missiles were controlled by the Germans. They had small, earth-bermed blast shelters by the launchers, but we knew if the balloon went up, we were toast.

And after 3 minutes after the war started the nukes you were guarding would have been launched giving everyone there a generous 5 minutes of retirement before being disposed of. War is romanticised in movies but its really just a massive slaughter for the first minutes/hrs. The soviet were planning to nuke everything in their way so they could drive to the French coast in a few days. Glad that's all over now...

In the times when this bunker was operational, the cold war era, Holland, Denmark, and Germany had American warheads stored in bunkers like this one. That is why particularly these countries were marked on that "target-map" This bunker in Poland couldn't have destroyed the targets by itself, it didn't have anything "aimed at targets" as it only stored the warheads for the USSR. This was just like the Americans did in Holland, Denmark and Germany. It was basically a warehouse It didn't have the ability to launch them tho. A mobile launching platform was needed, or transport to another bunker where missiles were stored and where launching installations were operational.

The large tank was for diesel fuel to supply the generator. They called it - oil tank which was partially correct since diesel fuel is basically oil. Interesting to note that in some military installations, some electrical conduits (that carried important wiring circuits) were pressurized with dry air. Any attempt to penetrate the conduit would drop the air pressure and set an alarm.

This ammo bunker wouldnt survive (like any other being on a target list). Its a misconception that a bunker can be built to reliably survive potential direct hits and NATO would just plaster a site like this with a few warheads of which one is likely to hit it close enough to take it out, in case the weapons were still there. Soviet facilities were always rated for medium sized (high double to low triple digit kiloton range) circa one kilometer away. That was with NATO warheads in mind, which were typically smaller but with a far superior CEP over Soviet counterparts. Thats why the Soviets liked their megaton range nukes - wont matter if direct hit or 3 miles out, any structure will crumble under the shockwaves traveling through the ground, whether it is spring suspended or not. And if it would happen so that blast doors like these without a structure to break the blast, would directly face a 300kt detonation under 0.5km, doors like these would likely not survive.

Yes, these appeared to be short ranged missiles, (scud sized). I presume that was the peace-time storage bunker for the warheads. If there was a drill or increased readiness, the warheads would me placed on the rockets. There is a glancing view of the mobile rocket truck models that had the rockets. I presume it would take several hours to get all of the warheads mounted before they could operational.

Really interesting that the had to cool to bunker as a result of heat decay from the plutonium in the warheads, really tells you how much Pu-239 was physically there. Typically you wouldn't have to worry about radiation hazards with nuclear warheads considering Pu-239 is only an alpha emitter with a very small amount of neutron emission from Pu-240 contamination, but with 80 large warheads in such a well shielded environment is a decent hazard since it's unknown what other radioisotopes were in those warheads. Surprised they wouldn't just have a well shield space for engineers to stay in until they had to interact with the warheads.
@jwenting
@jwenting 2 жыл бұрын
The probably did. There were extensive living quarters outside the bunker, and looks like several levels to the bunker. The troops would be separated from the warheads by several meters of reinforced concrete and of course steel and the material of the warhead casing as well unless they were directly working with them.

So where was the launch area? nearby or just a storage depot

I believe these would have been deployed using mobile rocket launcher trucks. so no fixed launching area. I presume the trucks would have been moved to lots of different areas so they could be easily targeted. The only issue is that if there was a sneak attack with no warning they would have never been able to launch since it likely would have taken many hours to get all those warheads mounted to the rockets.

One thing I didn't get: What type of bombs were stored here? In the scale model, it looks like the cone shape of missile warheads but there doesn't seem to be any missile facility. I then guess it was bombs to be dropped by planes.

I always thought that most Russian launchers were mobile ones.

I asked myself the same question. The best I could find was that the type and the amount is unknown, it mostlikely must have been for the mobile launchers of the Scud, Luna and Tochka launchers. These launchers were operated by polish units. The missiles from this (and two other bunkers) would have been brought to a handover location specified by the soviets and then transported by the polish units to the launchers in case of a first strike scenario. Or of course nuclear shells for artillery and bombs dropped by planes. So weapons between 0.5 kT and 500kT and about 281 were agreed upon. Mind you that the document I read mentioned that the procedures (missiles) for this handover were defined relativly late in 1986, so bevor that well no idea, propably though they figure it out on the fly and tell the pols when basicly at the last moment?? or just bombs for planes, since with those the soviets could have just shown up at a polish airbase and said drop it, without major logistic hassel compared to the much larger missile warheads and mobile launchers, airbases at last tend to not move...
