ATI is a great damper, so good move. You will never have to worry about that issue again. I would have busted you to cam it while it was in there. Only a few more bolts away lol.

Hey from Calgary Alberta too! The balancer on my C6 started separating also! Only after 40k. Did the replacement job myself in my backyard on stands/ramps. Was a bitch of a job trying not to bend stuff! Its like an import car! There is ZERO room to get your hands in anywhere! Anyways, successful mission! Praying I never have to do it again! Went aftermarket parts also. GMs factory stuff is junk. Went A.R.P. Center bolt just to make sure! Happy New Years to all!
@leonlawrencez284 жыл бұрын
Glad to see it back on the road. As long as you know you got it fixed correctly then it was worth it. I got my C5 and I made sure I had a C5 maintenance account set aside. Little things Im willing to do but some stuff I just have no desire to 🔧🛠️ on my car. That's what my Corvette $$$$$ is for. Happy Christmas.

Your humor was extra on point in this one 😂 I agree though, I recently thought my balancer was on its way out and was dreading doing this on the ground... glad the cost wasn’t too bad, now go enjoy as soon as your driveway clears out! Happy new year!
@lag17914 жыл бұрын
There are enough DIY on youtube and on the Corvette forums to tackle this youself. Winter time in driveway, yeah no way. But in nicer weather over a weekend you definatly could get er done and saved yourself a ton of money and more importantly, learned alot about your car. I'm going to be doing my C6Z06 next year sometime(most likely next winter). I do have a heated garage but not a lift. i'm going to go with a PowerBond Race HB that is about $100 less expensive than the ATI one.

It was absolutely worth taking it to a shop for repair, and I’m speaking as a former mechanic who still does most of his own repairs. I just don’t have the equipment to get my C5 off the ground high enough for something like this, so if it ever happens to me, it’ll go straight to the shop 😉

Good move, decent deal. I had my harmonic balancer replaced with the same ATI about 2 or 3 weeks before you did yours. I think my grand total was just a hair under yours at $1,200 something. Definitely the way to go! Some people just don't have the time or patience to completely disassemble the front end on a sports car

I’d say it’s worth it. This spring I decided to have a shop replace my clutch, slave and master cylinders, rear main seal and rebuild my torque tube. $2700 but so worth not doing that myself in my driveway all summer.
@randallmason17063 жыл бұрын
Great video, this was a job for a professional, you made a good choice. I own a 99 pewter also, waiting for 100,000 mi, balancer.
@theflying704 жыл бұрын
I did my balancer on jackstands in the garage 6 months ago. Not the hardest automotive job I've ever done, but very tedious. I used a (highly recommended) Powerbond balancer, an ARP bolt and a new seal. I don't think I spent $200.00 on the whole job. Spending $200.00 on two belts that are of no better quality than good aftermarket belts (that are 1/3 of the cost) is insane, as is being charged $48.00 for a crankshaft seal even at retail. I used a National seal from the local auto parts store and it was $19.00.
@jeffreymoore44744 жыл бұрын
Right choice. I am having my service person do the Harmonic balance or on my C5. I went with the summit 2501. It had a better warranty (one year) then the ATI (three months), Was slightly more than half the price of the ATI and is also built for racing application. I also don’t wanna be stuck on the side of the highway.

What was your mileage atbthe time of this repair?
@edgardovigocastillo7944 жыл бұрын
Is funny because yes the OEM harmonic balancer have issue but we have to remember those cars have 18 to 22 year old, you choose a great balancer but is not bad if you install a stock one if you don't want to spend 400 on a balancer, the only thing is that after 10 years take another look on it. My 98 Vette still with the factory balancer and is running straight but im going to replace it just becuase is old and it can fail at any moment.

Does anyone drive an automatic transmission c5?? I have one for sale down the street but its automatic... really want a 6 speed... is it worth waiting? Any info or comments welcomed
@colesmithysmith17274 жыл бұрын
Depends on the deal. People want top dollar for 6 speeds there was one with 140k miles for 15k and I got the auto with less miles for 8k
@brandonsever25764 жыл бұрын
Absolutely not, unless you don't care about driving. If that's the case, don't a sports car. I owned a 6sp manual c5 and the drivetrain was awesome, even bone stock. After working on and driving an automatic c5, completely different story. It's a horrible feeling, mushy, shlushbox automatic and the crazy long gearing makes it feel very slow and unresponsive. Completely an old man's highway cruiser, nothing more. Edit: let me rephrase, its absolutely worth waiting for a manual transmission car

Awesome intro to the video. Get a battery tender. Your Vette is the best car you own, (how many do you own now? Like ten?) it should be in the garage and NOT have a Christmas tree on it, that alone is a sin, not to mention the snow. I would do the same thing you did with the balancer, mine has yet to go but at least I know a fair value price for it. Keep up the C5 videos.

Same, it’s not a bad price considering all the work that goes into this job.
@liamlapierre3294 жыл бұрын
I would advise you get that done ASAP! The balancer can start walking forward and chew into your power steering rack, or walk backwards into the timing cover, which is moucho denaros! Either is not good! All the best!

$1200 to $1500 is what I paid for my c6 harmonic balancer from summit racing at the dealership..i cant remember exactly...the air conditioner belt squealing fir fice minutes each morning. c5 or c6, c7's are still too expensive for a "just go for it" attitude haha. You'll have maintenence on any car.
@david0290144 жыл бұрын
@@jeffgrusky1115 yeah I keep going back to c5 or c6 because I can probably get one on the cheap cash, no car payments to worry about. Plus insurance is way cheaper on classic cars in New Jersey.

My two cents. Glad the C5 is back at home. Like your vlog. I hope you had a towel under,, that tree , if not i'm loosing faith in you. And also leaving a corvette out in the weather is sacrilegious. You might get with Dad and see about extending the garage or a car port. 👍👍

I also had a professional do my damper. We used the GM, I figured if it lasted 14 years that was good enough for me. My total cost with new belts and an idler pulley was $750. Didn’t think about the seal, oh well. Merry Christmas
@ricksgarage80694 жыл бұрын
At some point you may feel compelled to take all the expenses of the car such as its price, interest, insurance, fuel, repairs, mods, ect, add them and then divide it by the number of miles you have driven it giving you a total cost per mile. I suggest you not do that.
