Our daughter's friend's family built and provision a remote cabin in the mountains as a tribute to a family member that lost their lives in the area. They hike to the cabin every year to provision and maintain it.

In various out of the way places here in the UK, we have these little tiny (usually one room) stone or slate cottages called Bothys. Sometimes they have electric and a wood burning stove, but you also get the ones that are just a room with raised stone slabs and a basic fireplace. Most travellers who stay in them usually leave excess kit behind for others that are less fortunate. I left a candle, an MRE, a couple of batteries and a small amount of kindling for the fire at the one I stayed at in the Scottish Highlands. Happy Days..............

@@Steve.._. Hmm? who said "on a mountain". Farmers for example have found outbuildings on their farms destroyed... with garbage everywhere around them. Farmer had to call the fire department because some how... his horse run in caught fire and was burning. Turns out some people hung a tarp over the enterence and tried building a fire inside to stay warm but... set the entire place on fire. parks and rec - several rental cabins were found just trashed... since they were only 3 season cabins they weren't used in the winter, were broken into garbage and fecal mater was everywhere... propane tanks laying around... many likely stolen. cost something like 150k to fix and clean everything. it happens all the time.

@@nobodyspecial6513 Typically it's an old cottage dating from 1-200 years ago. Stone walls, slate roof, no plumbing. Better built than what Americans mean by a cabin. Many of them are in remote parts of the highlands where there are no roads nearby. The original occupants probably got run off in The Clearances. There are many places where there used to be villages and all that is left is the occasional chimneybreast. The main thing is that they get you out of the wind and rain and have a platform, or bunks, where you can get your sleeping bag off the ground. Slate roofed granite buildings are very tough and require little maintenance. Which is why they survived to be repurposed.

@@nobodyspecial6513 Just one of the more recent stages in the endless series of bad things that built what Britain is today. We just know more about it because it was recent. The Romans did just as bad or worse to southern Britain. My own family is half Scottish and half Northern English. My paternal side is from the area that the Border Reivers raided. But we also raided them. In the end the families were so mixed that everyone had relatives on both sides. My maternal side is from Fife, north of Edinburgh. But I am also descended from Vikings, and have the genes to prove it. They raided and destroyed all over northern Britain, but also stayed and ended up part of the community, which is why a lot of town names in the north end in ton, places with Kirk in the name are using the Viking word for Church. The northern British, on the Tyne, Tees, and Clyde, built most of the ships that the Royal Navy used to roam the world stealing anything that could be transported. Like the Vikings. Most of those crews were from the north too. So... it's complicated. But The Clearances were still a terrible crime against humanity.

I think these types of cabins should always have a few cans of something left behind in them, in case someone is in really dire straits. These cabins might save you from the cold, but if for some reason you lost everything and had to take shelter there, you'd still be in a lot of trouble if you had no food or water. So a couple bottles of water and cans of food should be mandatory at all times.

yeah it would be smart to place these all throughout the deep wilderness for pro hikers and the un-pro who get lost, especially out in national parks, Yellow stone park, etc etc. with a irreplaceable Hamm radio, dry food. once a month restock them, repaid, make modifications if needed, and replenish first aid kits and other goods.

What a blessing to find such a nice shelter. You would do well to first shovel out the excess ash (since there was soo much) from the stove before starting a fire. That way you have more room to stock your fire with more wood/fuel.

There appeared to be plenty of unburnt carbon amongst that ash. Considering the location and lack of available sources of heat, I’d leave it where it was and use it as a good base for a fire.

From what I saw, there wasn't any wood to burn. There should always be some ashes left in the bottom of a wood or other fuel burning stove/heater. They stop the bottom of the stove from burning out as fast.

If I knew I was going to be warm, dry and sheltered and not ha e to sleep in a tent id be more inclined to go mountain climbing. I live in Scotland so it's on my doorstep but I've a friend who works for mountain rescue and really most of the times theyre called out because people have gone up mountains totally unequipped amd have got caught by the ever changing weather.

What really amazes me about most of these survivalist is they'll build a fire to warm up the cabin and themselves, yet go outside for something and leave the door WIDE open thus allowing all the warm air to leave the cabin. I heat my home with wood and when I go outside to fetch more wood I close the door behind me, same when I come back in.
