Let’s be honest.. NHL officiating this season hasn’t been spectacular.. In fact.. theres been many instances that will just leave you flat out scratching your head as a hockey fan. But In this game between the Pittsburgh Penguins vs The Detroit Red Wings.. we saw Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde absolutely lose it after this coaches challenge was called a goal. We break down the call, and how the confusion around goalie interference can change the dynamic of the NHL playoffs.

I can remember a game years ago with the Sharks (the team I root for) where Nabokov had the puck covered with his glove. Zetterberg skated in and poked his glove and dislodged the puck into the net. This honestly felt like the straw that broke the camel's back for Lalonde. There have been so many shit calls over the season that have screwed over the Wings. This was only the third challenge the Wings made over the entire season. They are 0/3 on coach's challenge. I'm sure every team can say that they've been screwed over by a bad call or non-call. The NHL officials need to be transparent and explain calls, and for the love of God, admit when they are wrong!

As a Wild fan, Evason is petrified to challenge. If it goes to Toronto, Minnesota never wins so now even when the odds are 80% or higher he declines to challenge. Against Calgary in OT, they literally called both benches back to the ice to disallow a goal on an offside. When the players with a birds-eye view leave the ice, it’s probably a goal? Same play with Edmonton in the playoffs, good goal, possession bull crap and another arbitrarily call. Cost us a point which is huge right now as we’re trying to get the 1 seed in the central. This play was blatant goaltender interference, as obvious of a call that could be made. I do feel some teams get calls all the time, Toronto, Pittsburgh, Rangers, Colorado, Edmonton to name a few. Lastly, another call missed is the goalie delay of game, as goalies push the net off the post to ease pressure. This needs to be called period. Went to the Toronto / MN game In November, three times - just a face off. This will come up in the playoffs, guaranteed, it’ll be ignored. Next year Detroit starts the climb up the standings 💯.

I know that we don't want to slow down the game with too many video reviews, but for cross-checking, high-sticking, boarding, kneeing, and other things that can cause serious injuries, the offending player should be penalized any time it is caught on video, even if the refs didn't see it in real time.

I remember a couple of weeks ago during a caps game, the goalie was actually laying down on the puck after a caps player pushed it underneath of him on a loose puck. The other team actually PUSHED the goaltender into the net. Of course there was a challenge on the play since it was GI but the final call was a goal. It was basically a dog pile on the goalie, but one of the players from the opposing team actually pushed a caps skater, who pushed the goalie into the net. APPARENTLY IF the goalie doesn’t have the puck secured in his glove, the goalie can still be slid into the goal from another player since he isn’t in the active motion of saving the puck. It was a 200 IQ move since technically the rule book says it should count as a goal, but they definitely rewrite the rule around to “in the act of or engaging in a puck stoppage. That way if the puck gets shot, it’s GI. if the goalie is securing the puck and gets pushed out of position, GI. If the goalie initiate the contact, goal. Similar to penalties where players try to flop. If a goalie goes out of their way to make a call GI, it shouldn’t count. If they were making a realistic save, it should be GI

NHL officials didn't come out in the media to rectify their reputations They paid him to shuddup, battened down the hatches-learned how to take more control, more subtly And now we have teams traveling with their own video crews-coaches challenges have been overturning refs lately There's no precedence for this type of goalie interference. As an Oilers fan, I am still haunted by the second round of the 2017 playoffs. But considering Ryan Kesler was allowed to push his glove down on Can Talbot's pad to slow him down, which allowed Rakell to tie the game (the Oil were up 3-0 with 3 and a half minutes left in the game, which would have given them the series lead heading back to Edmonton), then I don't know what goalie interference is. It seems to keep changing depending on who the officials of each game are.

Oh no. It was waaaayyyy worse than that. I live and am from E-town. I however am a HUGE Penguins fan since they drafted Jagr. So if it comes down to Pens and Oil in the finals, I'm going Pens all the way. But..... I tell my friend this, and it comes up every so often (he gets Bieksa and Kesler mixed up, understandable, both dirty and both played for same shit team) that the play was total garbage. And I'm being polite about it. He didn't push the pads. He literally put his hand on top of the goalie pad, anchored himself against the stuff going in around him. Then with the hand on top of the pad, he proceeds to move it back and forth until the puck comes loose and then shoves the pad towards the puck which knocks it in the net. Just brutal that at the highest level they get the calls wrong. Sure, by your eyes only, but your going to a video replay which has tons of angles and you can change the speed and everything else to your liking or viewing. There should be no mistakes.

This team never wins the draft lottery so why tank. The last number 1 pick was in 86 and that's of the 3 all time. They've had plenty of opportunity to get one recently and in the previous "dead wings" era and they got nothing.

@jeremykraenzlein5975 Жыл бұрын
@@Nichaelas And the higher picks aren't always better anyway. Last year the Calder Trophy (Rookie of the Year) went to a #6 overall pick, Moritz Seider. Back in 1983, the Red Wings had the fourth overall pick, and were hoping to get local player Pat LaFontaine. In the short term, he would have been their best bet to fill up the arena for home games, which was a major issue for the team at that time. But LaFontaine was taken with the #3 pick. At the time the Wings were disappointed, but today we thank God that LaFontaine was not available, as awesome as he was, because that is what forced the team to "settle" for Steve Yzerman with the #4 pick. Then in 1990, Detroit actually had the third overall pick, and selected Keith Primeau. He never lived up to the expectations of that pick, but it ultimately worked out because he was the key to the Shanahan deal a few years later. But imagine the possibilities: with the fourth pick that year, Pittsburgh drafted Jamiour Jagr.

That's interesting. Yes I think it is subjective... You'd be correct especially after Tim Poole. They're just more careful with their mics now! If the puck is right there and they're digging for the puck, that might be different. I didn't see the play you speak of- in this video, at the very end, we can see he has spun the ENTIRE goalie around That spinning caused the puck to go in He did not have a visual of the puck. His stick was not on the ice digging under the pad-it pushed the middle of his pad. So I don't know if the two compare yes, you can push UNDER a goalies pad if that's where a live puck is and you're digging for it. But clearly his stick was not on the ice digging for a puck-it was about 6 in above the ice, pushing the goalie pad, spinning him around. It's smart, but not legal. That's the difference to me - the location of his stick blade, whether he had a visual of the puck. But-it's a couple of weeks before playoffs. We've seen this funky officiating every end of season the past 5-6 years. They have fined coaches for speaking about in press conferences -I know Butch Cassidy took a $25,000 fine, Canadian coaches complained during the pandemic season with the Canadian division Habs were not the best Canadian team They got a lot of help from their referee friends and everybody knows it, including Hab fans over the age of 40 So now-teams travel with their own video coaches during games- why coaches' challenges are overturning refs now. We'll see what the next move is Enjoy the playoffs!

This shit has irked me ever since the 2017 Oilers-Ducks series where Kesler physically held onto Talbot's pad and prevented him from pushing back into position. If you make contact with a goalie prior to the puck entering the net and impede his ability to make the save, no goal. Honestly tired of it. Players shouldn't be playing within the crease to begin with, and hopefully as the league gets higher skilled they begin to weed out net front play that borders on interference.

And even after reviewing the play twice, was still called a goal. Bad call!! I could see if we didn't have reviewing of play it could get missed. The correct ruling on this it should have been reviewed for the goalie being pushed into the net not Goalie Interference. This review should have come from Toronto and the coach should not even had to challenge it. By rule you are not allowed to push the goalie into the net. The challenge should have been for that not interference because there was no interference and if that’s what they reviewed for the goal stands if it crossed the line. It could have been called no goal and the coach still lost the challenge. The bottom line is the review is what Toronto wants it to be. The System is a joke!

I think the refs felt that the skate and puck "may" have been over the line before Zucker pushed his pad. (It's close) I'm also guessing that the refs had better video of it than we do. In this video the camera angle switches at the crucial moment.

What do I think of this call? Doesn't surprise me, Pittsburgh always gets any borderline call. I'm a Devils fan and earlier in the season Dougie Hamilton scored a goal against them and it got called back because Haula barely grazed the goalie (I think it was Jarry). What's crazy about it was that it was called no goal on the ice. Apparently to the refs it was so obvious that it was goaltender interference that they couldn't even let Pittsburgh challenge it. I guess that's what happens when you have the golden boy on your team and have been good for almost 20 years, you have the respect of the officials. Whereas Detroit has been bad for so long they get shafted.

That was absolute bullshit, Holy shit, like why can someone literally push the goalies pad with their stick, and its like "Yeah whatever" but god forbid you snow the goalie cause your trying to crash the net, LIKE EVERY PLAYER SHOULD, and suddenly its interference. The ‘clarity’ is there in the rule in black and white. And it’s not the on ice officials who get the blame for these calls…it’s the unseen and apparently unaccountable clowns in Toronto or wherever that are somehow interpreting what they see on video differently than everyone else. Utter garbage call and Lalonde was right to lose it! He’s usually a pretty calm guy and the Wings finished the game great…maybe a little inspired by this.

Did he spin the goalie around? He may have, I didn't see it. That's the problem. Taking control of the goalies movement If we're going to allow players to push goalies' gear so it causes them to spin around in unnatural ways? Especially causing the puck to go into their own net? That's definitely goalie interference-the pads are his gear. If Charlie McAvoy did not see the puck, was pushing the goalie pad against the direction the goalie was moving, without the puck in sight? He uses the goalie pad to spin the goalie around so the puck goes in? Ya can't do that. Do you know what period of the game that was? I'll look it up for kicks & giggles sometime- goalies are my thing. I'd be interested in seeing that. Yes, I am a bruins fan- colors don't run after 5 decades. Yet I'm a hockey fan, not a fool! 🐻

Playing devils advocate, maybe the refs saw the flex in Ned's leg as a reaction to be hit by Zucker's stick but only Ned will know if he gave enough force to constitute a push. I don't think there's any "fixing it" tbh; it's a judgement call not something you definitively define. With scrambles in the crease it's 50/50 so just make sure you wear your lucky jock strap.

The Officiating is too much of a deciding factor at some points during games. The rules are there to help with consistency and to keep the integrity of the game intact. when Joe Schmoe decides he does or does not wanna call a penalty for whatever personal reason (outside of not seeing the infraction happen) then that official needs to be looked at.

The puck was already across the line when his pad was pushed. That's why is wants interference. You can't interfere with a goalie after a goal is scored. And before anyone jumps in my shit, watch the video, the push forces the goalies pad across the line sideways in into the net. And the view that shows the puck over the line clearly shows the push after the puck crosses.
