I have said it here many times___ things like this do NOT happen when we use wheel chocks at boat ramps. When I back down the ramp slowly in Neutral and come to a stop my wife or son gets out and puts the wheel chocks under all of the wheels. It only takes one minute or less to play it safe. Same procedure when I back down slowly in Neutral to retrieve the boat. Wheel chocks always and that makes having such an accident Impossible. Step 1) Back down in Neutral. Step 2) Come to a stop and put on the Parking Brake. Step 3) then shift into park. It is NOT harder to do it right than it is to do it wrong and risk bloop, bloop, bloop.

Well, in all fairness your method is making it a lot harder than it should be. Been boating for 35+ years, always trailered them. I'm currently hauling/launching/retrieving a 30' Express Cruiser weighing in at just over 13,000# fully loaded for 10-15 days of fun. Never, not once, have I used 1 let alone multiple wheel chocks and ever had any sort of incident. The ramp I launch at is very long and steep - steepest ramp I've ever used, and somewhat sandy. I manage my speed to keep the kinetic energy low as I back down the ramp (in reverse), ease on the brakes to a complete stop, apply the E-brake, then slowly release the brake pedal to minimize stress on the parking pawl. I wait a few seconds to make sure everything is stable then get out and deal with the boat. More often than not, I'm by myself as well. The odds the parking pawl is going to fail with a dead load of maybe a few thousand pounds (most of the weight of the boat is floating on the water) are so high as not to warrant chocks. If it gives you peace of mind then certainly worth the time and effort but it's not necessarily the 'right' thing to do. All these folks that end up sinking their vehicles did something negligent to cause it, few if any were caused by catastrophic failure of the parking pawl without any current or prior abuse. Coasting down the ramp in neutral is unusual, and actually illegal in certain states that prohibit shifting into neutral while in motion. It's a moronic law, doing so will prevent you from spinning out in rain or snow if you catch it quick enough, but clearly our politicians aren't always smart.

As as a long time boater, boat builder one of the best quotes I have heard in a long time came from you. In reference to docking you said, "don't go any faster than you are willing to hit the dock". So simple, so profound. Anyway, you are always talking about mosquitoes. I am a builder and avid fisherman on the Connecticut Shoreline and marsh mosquitoes are a real problem. These things have 6 Packs to carry passengers for heck sake... Anyway, 50 years of deet replaced by a 30 dollar "thermacell" from Bass Pro, or similar. The hand held "Mossy Oak" I have is amazing, 90% of the time on the water now I wear no repellent at all. Just click the thing on and set it down next to you or hang from your belt and you and friends are good. Take this down if you want, I don't work for them and will note, any brand thermacell will work. Fact is the tech works, try it. Also, use colored head lamps and flashlights. Red works best but green works well too. Haven't tried my blue light yet but the bugs don't see them so they don't flock to you. Good luck and thanks for the dedication to our entertainment.

Don't waste your money on buying one if it was in saltwater. Years ago we bought a car (a small sports car) and it was from up north and it had been pretty much under fresh water. When we got it, it had been cleaned and the inside replaced, etc. We did not know at the time. After having electrical problems the repair shop told us it had been sunk. We spent a small fortune trying to fix it. We sold it as a sunken car, that runs some times and needs major repairs.

There is a chain called Pick A Part - that is what you call a "junk yard" - they sell individual parts - the ones we have in South Carolina you have to pay an admission fee to get in and look around - you have to bring your own tools.

This keeps happening because people don’t know what they are doing. If your Truck is 4x2 you should never exit and leave your truck in park at the ramp, always stay with you foot on the brake. If it’s 4x4 you need to use your 4x4 even if it’s for launching only and in this case you can exit your truck and leave it in park since all 4 wheels are going to be locked through the 4x4 system. When you have only 4x2 people put their truck in park and then the emergency brake and they don’t realize that all they are doing is locking just the rear tires wich are the ones in the water on the green (slippery )algae. If you stay in your truck on a 4x2 truck with your foot on the break you should be ok.
