For example, redeeming a coupon for most major retailers requests a promo code, and then generally asks for your info because the site is still processing a transaction. Here's what I always think about keeping chickens, or any livestock: who will take care of them when you leave? Seriously. You can't drop a bunch of chickens off at your vet for boarding. If you don't like eggs, does your family? Are you planning to eat those chickens? Isn't it easier to just pick up a dozen eggs when you need them and get nicely packaged chicken thighs at the store? Are you prepared to deal with the cost of keeping chickens? In summer they can scratch for bugs and what not, but you're in Canada! What happens in the winter? I mean chicken feed ain't chicken feed, know what I mean? And you have to protect them from the elements. And predators. You're in the country. Are there foxes, coyotes, wolves, bears? Sasquatch? You may find out that there are at the worst moment. Are you planning a cottage industry to sell the eggs? Check the local food selling regs. Hmmm...Gosh, don't you have enough going on with being a firefighter, and your amazing YT channel and having had an HGTV show? I told my husband about that and seriously, we're both fangirlling you for it. You will be in the best shape of your life and you've got that big textbook to learn...Have I talked you out of the chicken thing yet? (By the say, I once had a friend who became a chicken farmer. She went from city slicker to chicken farmer...It's work. Really hard work.) BTW, I'm 65 and just now starting classes for my PhD. You go girl, in all you want to do! Here is something that my daughter and I do…1-2 times a month, we go out for coffee together. We usually go to my DIL’s bakery (where sometimes we run into my son) but also will head to a mom & pop cafe for a full meal. This has helped our bond grow even stronger. So, start by taking your daughter’s out for on-on-one time. They will come to cherish those moments. I also have done this with my son, but his schedule is crazy so I usually just head to his house to visit (they just had a baby!).

Ah... The baby chick fever. Been there done that. Chickens were neat To have and raise and I'm glad I had that experience, but they were so much work! Some advice: Prefab coops are usually too small for chickens. Chickens get sick easily and if they don't get sick and die they end up getting eaten by a predator. Most vets do not treat chickens and if they do they are classified as an exotic pet and will cost you more. You basically have to be your own chicken doctor. Chickens are loud and messy. They poop everywhere. Hens sing a song when they lay eggs and rooster crow anytime they want to not just at sunrise. Some other issues: dealing with frostbite on the chickens combs and wattles in the cold winter months and dealing with their water freezing. In the summer they can get heat stroke and die. Take it from someone who raised chickens, don't get them especially if you don't eat eggs and don't plan on selling eggs or raising chickens to eat. There are easier things to do in the homestead hobby than raise chickens. ;)

Very nice video Cass 💛 For chickens it is not authorized in all cities, there are standards (such as a maximum number of chickens, health standards, etc.). My colleague had chickens and it's surprisingly a lot of maintenance and still expensive, you have to feed them, clean them, maintain the enclosure, we are in Canada you have to remember that in the fall/winter/spring the chickens have to had a heated place, that we cannot skip a day without feeding them, therefore more complicated travel etc. I sincerely believe that with everything you do and work (which is incredible), this is a lot of extra work 😅 in my humble opinion perhaps taking it all more relaxed during your free time would perhaps be better, for now 💛🙂

Cass, I adore you, so I am going to point out that you are (what my family and I refer to as) "hyper-oojamaflipping" - doing all the "things", with increasing velocity. In ADHD it happens because of our constant need to manually restock our dopamine levels. Each time those levels start to settle (cos let's face it, contentment isn't stimulating), we feel the need for a new high. We (our family) pull each other up because we have all experienced the inevitable crash that comes with too much fun. It feels and looks AMAZEBALLS all the way to burnout. You actually helped me rein it in a little and keep a lid on it. One very precious piece of advice you have given us recently is to always leave 20% free space. I apply that rule now to my time and money. As for chickens, homesteading looks so glamorous -but it comes with many caveats. No warm sleep-ins (ever), chicken mites making their way into your furnishings (they bite us), some awful sounds at the crack of dawn, and the poop -everywhereee if you free range, and the stench of it is an absolute assault. If you don't even like eggs, I can think of no worthy reason to put yourself through it. Get a goat or something. Stay awesome Cass -one oojamaflip at a time!

Even if the owner doesn't mind the noise, everyone else nearby has to listen to it as well. It is just like living near a dog that never stops barking. The owner goes deaf to the sound, but the rest of the neighbours are being driven crazy-pants. I don't know anything about chickens, But I know that I don't care for noisy roosters. Your printable and ebook is so helpful for identifying the areas to focus on, Thank you! As for chickens... it is all pretty simple until a chicken gets sick or stops laying or is a rooster (if you can only allowed to keep hens in your city). I kept backyard chickens for 9 years and during that time i had 3 flocks. Hens have 2 good laying seasons and one okay season and then their egg production drops off, but they still take your time, attention, and resources. Having a plan for rehoming them or processing them for soup is importnat... or dedicating yourself to having them for life (7-10) years, even if most of the time they are not producing eggs. I'm glad to be past the season of raising chickens. We moved on to kitty/cat fostering afterwards and did that for 7 years (52 kittens/cats over the 7 years).. We no longer do that anymore either. We're into simplifying now.

Maybe just have regular visits to chicken farms and talk to farmers about maintenence if that's a possibility for you? I also feel like if your property turns into a lake every now and then that may be dangerous for the chickens too. We had a hobby farm growing up (in Ontario) with horses, bunnies, pigs (at one point), ducks and for a brief moment we did have chickens. My mom was maintaining everything and because I was allergic to everything I just got the benefit of seeing things kinda at a distance. My mom loved the ducks that would swim in our pond, but hated the chickens and found them "dirty" in her words. Chicks are cute, but they grow up. Maybe you don't have to have everything and do all of the things. 🤷‍♀️ Maybe that's another way to make new friends, go to farms or petting zoos and meet new people with similar interests. Alternatively duck chicks are also really cute and ducks are beautiful. We did have lots of preditors like foxes and things come to visit and eat the ducks occasionally, but that may be another thought if you want a nice chicken substitute.

If you haven't grown up with farm mess including chicken mess, you'll probably think it's gross and end up not wanting to eat eggs that had potty on them. Just reality, friend. You've gotta work pretty hard to keep the nest boxes clean so your eggs will be clean. They are fun and cute, but the work of chicks is a LOT. You have to keep fixing their food and water so they don't knock it over and dehydrate or get potty stuck on their toes or have pasty rear ends, or...it goes on and on. So many of those coops are cute but may only last one year. Don't forget the crazy winter temps. Are you up for being out there putting vaseline on combs and wattles to prevent frostbite and the resulting gangrene? Or here where I live in Midwest USA, a heat lamp costs upwards of a dollar a day to run. It adds up. Their food is not cheap, either. Maybe you can farm sit some chickens while people go on vacation and that will make you get over it.

My dad had a chicken rescue. Some personal problems at home and he is being forced to get rid of some of them. It is a lot of work, but the eggs are worth it (taste better than store bought, to me). It also helps alleviate some of the stress - he can go out back and just watch the chickens roam around the yard and peck at the ground. The one downside is that his backyard doesn't have much grass anymore. If you do decide to go this route, you can always get a moveable chicken coop and move it around your yard.

On the topic of money, I think it's important to note that sometimes the answer IS to increase your income, rather than cut your spending. There is literally no place in the United States where a full-time minimum wage income will afford a one-bedroom apartment. If you find that you can't afford your needs (shelter, food, clothes, medicine, utilities), then the answer isn't to figure out which of those needs you can cut, it's trying to figure out how to get more income.

This is very true, you are right. The cost of everything has gone up so much, but wages aren't even close to matching that.

This is exactly my problem... The high cost of food these days has absolutely killed my finances and I already spend way less by not buying meat, only buying what's on sale, using all the loyalty and rebate apps, etc. I need to figure out how to increase income!

I totally agree! I’ve seen so many negative comments about her getting chickens and I disagree. I got mine a few months ago and I find them rather easy to take care of and like you said, once you get your coop setup, it’s pretty easy from there! I have 4 white chickens and 2 silkies and I love my silkies! I find them to be a lot cleaner than the others too!

We have chickens. 28 laying hens, another 29 hens that will start laying in the fall, 12 turkey chicks, 17 ducks, and about a dozen heritage broiler chickens, most of which will be kept for raising more broilers of our own. Chicks are a little tough to begin with, but once they hit about 2-3 months old, they're crazy easy to take care of -- especially if you just get a few and they remain in a coop. We free-range, and only shut them in at night, which is working well for us in our rural situation. We have a large family, and we set up a roadside stand at the end of our driveway to sell eggs ( and extra garden produce).

Cass, please no chickens. Many things to consider - what’s the zoning on your property, are they even allowed? Where I live if it’s not a zoned agricultural property it’s not permitted. They will also attract raccoons, coyotes, and other predators that will be after the birds, feed and eggs. My in-laws next door neighbours had chickens for a while, they had to get chicken babysitters every time they were away to both feed them and collect the eggs. Once they stop laying, in Ontario you have to take them to an actual licensed abattoir if you want the meat, it’s illegal to do it yourself. It’s a lot more work than many people think it is.

I thought about chickens once also but when I considered the cost all in, it’s not cheap and it is ongoing. Proper feed, good nesting, vet, constant care and maintenance. Seasonal extras etc. etc.. plus just because you get some eggs doesn’t men they are always good to eat. After consideration I decided to “leave it to the experts” all around on that one. Thank-you for sharing all you do. You are an inspiration and a joy. Great work.

Find a friend who has chickens and spend time loving on HER chickens, maybe offering to watch her chickens and such... get a feel for it . Some people, it just makes sense and they enjoy it, others just want the experience of knowing. I feel you on the homestead, I want a homestead too... Im just not sure I could maintain all the upkeep, I can barely keep up with my home I currently own. But I dream... of the smell if freshly chopped wood, of wood burning stove, getting heirloom seed and planting them, tending the garden as sheets dry of the line in the sweet smelling wind, baking and cooking home grown food from scratch, having fresh flowers from my own garden, drinking hot coffee and watching the sun rise from my porch swing or rocking chair... all of it. I WANT ALL OF IT!!! But, realistically, I could probably do a little bit of each, get a taste of it and if I think its something I could do long term... then see if I could incorporate it into our lifestyle. Dream BIG but start small. ❤

I am struck at a, how these all involve SMALL steps (one dollar, 15 mins exercise, small tidy-up) and b, how interrelated they are! Ride a bike, and you are improving your mental and physical health, saving money, and building relationships if you're with friends and family! (Plus helping the environment if that's part of your identity/ values.) Organize your cupboards and fridge, and you're blessing your home, saving money by planning meals and not wasting food, improving your diet and health, and probably spending more family time around a dinner table! Family tidy up promotes togetherness, improves mental health, and burns calories! Some activities are a a quadruple-whammy but there are probably some which hit even more life-improvement-spots. What a great topic to discuss, and again you break it down in an easily digestible manner. Very nice work, Cass!

I just went back to school online. I spent 13 weeks on a Master Teacher Para Professional, an assistant to licensed Teachers. It was challenging 3 math and 10 knowledge and understanding. The math was add, subtract, multiply, divide, geometry, pre-algebra, algebra, and data analysis. There were 10-point quizzes after each module. Then the big test. By the grace of GOD, I PASSED on June 10th,2024. Now I go to a job fair on July 30th. 2024. I even told myself in the beginning if the math got too hard, I was bailing. Well, I'm glad I didn't. I just hadn't remembered or seen that math for years . The Master Teacher program teaches how to solve the problems very nicely. So I learned all the math all over again. Quite the brain challenge. :)

We have quite a bit of pets at our house I would say chickens land somewhere in between the amount of work it takes to have 2 dogs vs the chinchillas. They arent quite as much work as the dogs but they still require work. I would say about 45 minutes a day (divided morning and night) for my chickens plus I let them roam around with me while I do things outside whether thats playing with my kid or yard work. Then about an hour and half once a week to clean and reset their home, give them new things to play with/on and plan out their treats. Also maybe 30 minutes a week to meal prep/plan their extras to their feed like veggies/fruit/ sourdough bread occasionally. Their food actually adds up lol. I would say dont get a pet unless you are 100% commited haha.

Hey there! Re: chickens-you may not like them on a personal level, YET-but once you have your own, you’ll realize they are some of the most entertaining animals to observe day-to-day that you could possibly own. They’re ridiculous and do develop their own personalities of course. They need enrichment, and safe free ranging time, is the key. And treats: healthy ones like mealworms, strawberries, etc. Their feed isn’t that expensive to keep up with, and the eggs are are super amazing bonus. Even if you don’t like eggs on their own, there’s always a recipe that requires them (unless you’re allergic, naturally). Or you can sell or give them/trade them with friends, family or neighbors. SOMEONE is always down for farm fresh eggs! Chickens are pretty easy to keep, just keep an eye on them for bumble foot and keep a spray on hand for farm animal wounds if they get an abrasion on their talons, etc. I’d recommend starting out with no more than 4-6, 10 tops. And I’d recommend the Buff Orpington as a great (and sweet) beginner’s chicken. We don’t eat our when they stop laying for good, though, we let them retire with dignity. We’re in it for the entertainment and eggs. 😁

I never used to be a chicken person, but now that I have them, I love them. Chicks definitely take more time than chickens, as well as equipment. You may want to see if someone needs to rehome adult chickens rather than getting chicks. Our chickens are free-range; they have the run of about 2 acres of our farm. We do not lock them up at night; our geese and roosters scare off the predators and the chickens love to fly into the trees to roost, so they are high up. Because of this, the most we usually have to do is provide supplemental feed. This is going to be influenced by what kind of predators you have around though. We do have a coop with roll-away nesting boxes, which keeps our eggs mostly clean, but since our chickens prefer to spend most of their time out and about there's not a lot of cleaning up after them that needs to be done. If you get chickens, please do not put them in an area easily accessible to a road. One of our neighbors has free-range chickens that get out into the road at times which is a hazard. Also, chickens will eat most food scraps except bones, so they are great for minimizing waste. I don't know if avian flu is in Canada; the biosecurity of your flock is something to consider. Research chickens before you get any. Social structure is something to be aware of especially if you get chickens from more than one flock or introducing young chicks to adults.

Hi Cassandra ! Thank you for the e-book and this video that presents it well. :) Forget about the chickens ! It is a lot of work, messy, smelly, not fun to clean up and not worth it especially if you don't like eggs ! Plant some organic flowers and enjoy the wild bees and birds and butterflies build a bee hotel and bird houses, all kind of natural shelters for small animals and let them feed themselves out of your garden. That way, you can enjoy them but will not have extra work to do nor money to spend on food. If you want to see or pet cute animals, go visit a neighbour or a farm once in a while.

Chicken can be very rewarding. They keep the bugs down in the yard, which is always nice. However, like any living thing, they can get sick or hurt, they can have drama in the flock, they can play hide and seek with where they lay their eggs each day. and as affordable as a coop is, that isn't where it stops. You'll learn more and more about them and want to give them more and more space and spend all kinds of money on new structures, new feeders, new watering systems, new enrichment toys for them, new foods/snacks for them. It gets out of control VERY fast. Also, ROOSTERS can be very mean, either to the hens or to you or both.

He also has cancer and has had 3 surgeries , my two other sons moved in and three grandchildren my grand daughter has spina bifida and is going to need a kidney she has daily care and my Pomeranian was just diagnosed with mega esophagus so she is hand fed . I have myotonic dystrophy .You can really help me out if you did shorts of decluttering you could body double with me, doing daily chores and the quick clear the fridge or the quick kids room etc. and also not feel so alone , it would be so nice to have a play list do you have this on your collaboration to get your house in order ? I used to volunteer at my old church's organic farm as a chicken helper. All I had to do was let them out of the coop, gather eggs, and fill their food and water dispensers in the morning twice a week. It was PERFECT. I got my fun chicken fix, I could go on my vacation because there were other volunteers to fill in, and i didn't have to clean the coop. The church has a CSA (community supported agriculture) program - you pay up front and get shares in eggs, vegetables, or honey, it a combination. This allows then to donate fresh produce and eggs to food pantries. So I not only got to play with the chickens, I was doing good for our community.

I thought that comment by Dr Wallbinger on the podcast was good; that being part of a group that has similar goals can also make friends. You have two areas where you do this, such as on Take Your House Back I think you would consider Dana K White as your friend. You've just started to become a firefighter, and while it may have been just a challenge to see if you could pass at first, there is potential IF you stick it out to be part of a tight community of people in your community. Thus try to resist the urge to just go onto the next thing right now, but rather to stick to the exercise and the study so can officially be part of the firefighter community. My sister has a hobby farm and all her chickens were killed by a predator, fortunately her children were grown but that sort of thing can be traumatic on kids. Also, even though they are chickens, we should not treat living things as transitory as getting a free sheet container from Tevo or nearly free shirts from Goodwill; it is a long-term commitment and you'd have to decide if you really are up for that or not. I like to see beautiful things, and would rather see you create beautiful gardens outside your home, as you have a good eye for beauty, than watch videos about you scooping poop :-).

P.S. If you have chickens, you will have to do a lot of initial work. My brother had 5 chickens (one recently passed) and he goes home at a certain time every day to feed them and care for them as if they are his children. He doesn't go on vacations because he wants to care for them, which I think he can find someone to watch them without an issue. I think chickens are great for saving money on eggs, but if you can't keep up with keeping the coop clean and having the ability to not obsess over them, while being okay to hire someone to care for them if you go away, then go for it.

As someone who lives without any other humans (only 2 kitties;) I don't need to do some of these things daily, like laundry, and at this season in my life I didn't like doing one chore each day (unlike a different season of my life when I worked full-time and DID do a chore each day, laundry one day, vacuum another day, groceries, clean litter boxes, etc, dishes and generally picking up after myself EVERY DAY!!! used to be 7 minutes PLUS my 1 daily chore.) Whereas now, when I tried that, I felt like I was alwayssss cleaning (probably since I'm home so much, compared to I used to work outside the home and then I used to just get the chore down the second I got home before I relaxed for the night, is my guess) Soooo now, instead I chose a different method now. I STILL Do my dishes EVERY DAY and generally picking up after myself around the house, small living & dining room sweeping, plus I do small decluttering as I go (if I try to use a pen that no longer works I throw it away immediately, I might even take the time to declutter the rest of the drawer if it's messy and if I have a few minutes too, that type of thing) but I'm currently in the maintenance mode of decluttering so rarely do I do big decluttering bouts (and I tend to schedule those on their all day decluttering online events for body doubling support for when I might want to go through my book collection again or something). But then for the weekly stuff (usually 1 load laundry weekly, vacuum, kitty litter boxes cleaning, dusting, bathroom, etc, I decided to do everything only 1 day per week. And bc I live only 1 human in a 1 bed 1 bath, it only takes (if I wasn't disabled, a normally functional adult) probably 1.5 to 2 hours tops (mostly bc the 2 litter boxes take at least 30 minutes for a complete empty, sanitary clean and refill combined;) I LOVED the variety of cleaning charts that you gave a while ago!!!! I had tried doing all of my cleaning each Monday (so trash bins go to curb bc early morning Tues trash pickup;) before you posted that, and then I saw your 'weekend warrior' is probably the category that I best fit in this season of my life. BUT Again like you're saying now, I little bit every day!!! I do my dishes and pick up after myself EVERY day!!! I small sweep the living room and dining room every day, and if anyone came over unexpectedly, even if it was an hour before I weekly cleaned??? It STILL looks amazing compared to the past!!!

Get the chickens. I have 5 and they are amazing. They are easy enough to get set up with food and water for the weekend. They are amazingly fun to sit and watch and remarkably satisfying to care for. Even cleaning the coop is satisfying. People run into issues when they pack their coop so full (for body heat in the winter) that they have to clean it constantly. Then they dont and it's a gross mess. They also drown in eggs. My advice is to give the chickens tons of room. Like a coop for 10-15. Turn the heater on in the winter. Get 5 chickens (hens cuz roosters get mean) so they have healthy social relationships (you need at least 3). And give the eggs away to your new friends. You will only get about 4 eggs a day so you will have a small surplus that won't overwhelm you. Also, cracking an egg a day over dog food is good for your dog. With ADHD I would suggest an automatic coop door that you can see from your kitchen window. That way you can check that it opened and closed from inside. Get the chickens. Everyone wants them so they are much easier to rehome than a cat or dog if you decide you don't like them.... but you will. Oh, and, choose one's for Canada.

Cas in my city there are wild chickens roaming everywhere. Every house on my street discovered a chicken roosting on their trees, and those went on to reproduce more chickens...so to us they're like stray cats or pigeons. They're just there. And some of us take them in and build them a coop in our backyard. 🙂

Our family has chickens, we actually have 4 'Mama's' as I call them because we lost a few to age and predators, so yes as one other commented you need a run along with the coop to keep them safe! We got 14 more I call these the 'babies' and have raised them up from chicks. integrating them now with the mama's in hopes to integrate them in a couple weeks. I don't think they are any harder then a cat, clean the coop weekly, feed them replace water every other day, grab the eggs daily they are really fun to watch as well!! Let us know what you decide!
