THIS CANOE IS TRYING TO KILL ME- Part I. Off Grid at our Remote Property, Episode 15

Girl in the Woods

Күн бұрын

Back at our remote property in the UP, I have a couple things to do... put a check valve on the hand pump on our new well, and get the canoe to the lake.
Sounds simple enough, but this remote lake just happens to be a mile away down a rugged trail on a very hot and humid day, with millions of mosquitoes and horse flies swarming me. OH yeah- and I'm using my homemade modified golf bag cart to transport that 80 lb. Grumman canoe. What could go wrong?
Watch me sweat, swat and NOT swear! (I wanted to!)
The struggle was real.

Ball valve, check valve.... whatever!
@westend3019

The ideal thing to have for your pump would be a "foot valve" just above the sand point. That allows the whole vertical pipe to stay full after you finish pumping. The "foot valve" is a true "check valve" with a metal insert to keep the water in the pipe. Good luck with the property!
@keithdeshong9612

@@westend3019 the water in the pipe would freeze and burst the pipe in the winter. Using the ball valve as a check valve is a great idea, they can let the pipes drain back out when it gets freezing.

The way they bite you is they have these scissoring mandibles and when they land on you they keep on biting you with a scissoring motion until they draw blood.........and then they enjoy the cocktail of your blood. An anti-bug suggestion: Put your clothes you plan on taking to camp with you in the dryer with either dryer balls or a few wash cloths wetted down with some kind of bug repellent oils or cedarwood and peppermint essential oils. Put them in the dryer together to help permeate through your clothes to help increase your bug protection when you put your clothes on, same with a neckerchief that you might want to consider wearing even though it's hot. Great Video, good luck

The oil doesn’t compromise the inside of the dryer, or catch on fire. That’d be my luck lol I would love that smell even with no bugs. I thought the same about a neckerchief to keep the bugs away from the hairline and neck. I used to put a tshirt on, then pull it off but leave it on my head and tie the sleeves around my neck. Sweat band for my head and bug protection for my neck and back. This bug situation they have is next level. I’ll never complain about mosquitoes in New England ever again. Of course ours have some nasty diseases they carry.

But I’ve lived in south Louisiana all my life so I guess it’s relative. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Hell…80+ degrees down here means it’s late September or even October and our first cool front has pushed through and everybody is busting out the gumbo pot! Hey Brooke, This is Callie, Don't you worry about those pessimistic folks regarding the chainsaw usage on your show, whom throw their two cents in ... when they really don't know how skillful you truly are Brooke! just by watching your previous shows in early 2019 I could already tell that you're very careful as a skilled hiker and survivalist! So therefore that makes youvery conscientious of what you're doing at all times doesn't matter if your lighting the fire, or working a chainsaw!! By the way Brooke, I ordered a red "She Gone" hoodie and a crimson/red t-shirt with you and Maisay on it "Get out and get happy!" from your Bonfire campaign! Just want to let you know that I also put it on Twitter, and Facebook to spread the word! I will be wearing both my t-shirt and hoodie with pride! I recently told the merchants who sells me the survivalist with compass and all about you and your show girl in the woods on KZbin, which he ended up checking out and subscribing! Because he thought you were super awesome!! I didn't say I tell him I told you so, but I sure had a smile on my face that said it! I'm very proud to be one of your subs, fan, and friend! I was born in Allegan, Michigan and as a young boy I hated the mosquitos and black flies and humid heat. We moved to Florida when I was 9 and mosquitos, no-see-ems were really bad there, but after drinking sulfur water for a few years they never bit me any more. I took a trip through the Everglades Wilderness Waterway and they did not bother me at all, but my friend from New York was eaten alive because he lived on city water his whole life. In going through swamps I found where there was a heavy sulfur smell (smells like rotten eggs) there were no mosquitos or other bugs, but when we got to some Indian Mounds where it was dry the mosquitos were bad again, so the smell of the water in the swamp was bugless, just the opposite of what most people would think. Now I live in the mountains of Montana and no bugs and no humidity.

My hair is long and thick enough it keeps the bugs off my neck pretty well. And I rub Citronella leaves, which I grow in my yard, on m hands to keep the mosquito away. But I like to wear long sleeve shirts to keep the mosquito off my arms. I had been wanting to buy some new light long sleeve button down shirts, but they're "out of season" so I couldn't find any at the store, and when I do find them they're usually at least $20 each. So I started searching online, and since they are "out of season" I found some on sale! With the addition of a discount code that I had, I ended up getting the shirts for about $6 each. At that price I bought 10 shirts. I'm not sure I have ever bought more than 1 shirt at a time in my life before (other than t-shirts, because they come on packs.) --- Your golf cart reminded me of when I used to golf. My cart was one someone had thrown away, and it didn't have a bag. So I tied a 3 foot piece of PVC sewer line on it to put my clubs in. Since I lived in the mountains and had no lawn, I played what we called "offroad golf". The last time I went to a golf course I got paired up with a guy and a girl who was loudly bragging about the Pro Am she had played in a few days earlier. The first hole I let her go first... since she was the "pro". It was a short dog-leg to the right. She slammed it straight into a house. I saw her laughing at my sewer pipe golf cart and 100 year old wooden driver with the leather on the shaft starting to unravel. I curved my ball around a big pine tree and half way up the fairway. I got par on the first hole, she got a bogie (1 over par). A few holes later my ball went off the fairway and was sitting on an asphalt walkway. She tried to tell me I needed to pick up the ball, walk to the edge of the walkway and drop my ball at arms length onto the edge of the fairway. I said "nah, I'll shoot it from where it's at." I pulled out my "woman's" 9 iron (I'm a small guy, most my clubs were women's) and popped the ball right up on the green near the hole, and ended up getting a birdie (1 under par.) She finished that hole but then refused to play with me anymore. She just couldn't handle having an old offroad golfer with a sewer pipe cart and pawn shop clubs showing her up like that :> --- Learning to survive heat is a learned skill, just like learning to survive cold is. Keeping your shirt and pants wet helps a lot. And getting a small towel wet and use it to put some water on your arms, legs, and face. Then put the wet towel on the back of your neck. When it gets 115+ here, most every summer, doing whatever it takes to keep cool is your main task for the entire day. Survival skills. I've had heat stroke, and it's not fun. In hot weather if nothing else I can always eat fruit. Canned peaches is a favorite in hot weather, even better if you keep them in the fridge or ice chest.

I keep both plants near me on the patio at night also. What about trying a high grade essential oil like peppermint from doTERRRA.? This week I'm getting bit by these tiny little things that look like a black stick. Maybe only a 16th of an inch long if that big. I have no idea what they are but its like a fly bite.

@@missingremote4388: $60 for a shirt! Wow, it must be a nice one!! I got 10 shirts for $60, and to my surprise they actually fit me! I'm only 5'6" tall but my arms are the same length as my 6'3" tall friend (a handy attribute in my younger years as an amateur boxer. Comes in handy at the dinner table too :> Usually if I find a shirt with long enough sleeves, the pocket it down on my stomach and the shirt is big enough to use as a pup tent. I ordered 10 shirts, they only had 9 in stock so refunded $10 (even though I only paid $6 each). So ended up getting 9 shirts for $50, so $5.55 per shirt.

I love have you are so real! You could have cut out all the troublesome parts but you kept them in because that's how it really is out there and you have to consider if you're up to all that but it is so rewarding to be out there in the wild and so empowering to be alone. And carry on.

Luv the check valve job. As far as the canoe cart goes you may want to purchase a "Tomato Cart" brand. Very portable and you can even keep it in your canoe for portaging long trails. This old girl loves hers and helps me move it around the yard when I get home. 🛶👍😁

Omg Brooke!!! I just about DIED watching you!!! We're in South Florida....where mosquitos should be the state bird....and when I kept hearing all the bugs buzzing away.....good heavens!! And the heat?? I would have sat under that well water and just pumped all day! Forget the lake!! Whew!! Also....just one more itty bitty thing. Can I please just add......get yourself a small 12DC oscillating fan.....Amazon has the cheap......and use your energized solar generator in that tent!!! IT burns almost zero watts. Ok.....Ok....I am shutting up now!! I don't know if I'll be able to sleep tonight with visions of a canoe 3\4 mile from a lake!! 😉

I was Raised using a Pitcher Pump and very Fortunate that we had great cool drinking water. It is very hard to enjoy a place like yours when bugs are steady after you, this is the reason that I like the mountains of the Ozarks, very few bugs flying, the chiggers and ticks are in the woods but bug spray will keep them at bay. I enjoy your working Habits and I know that it will be Great as you have a lot of Fortitude and Drive...

Hubby got me a new pair of headphones: he’s sleeping, it’s 3:16 am Friday June 3, 2022. Wanted some ME time. So here I am with you! Born in 1942, in the city-girl era of girls don’t do these things. I’m in absolute envy of you. Have a friend in Michigan that was bit by a bunch of black flies, she was able to crawl to her neighbor’s home to get help, and her neighbor got her to the er in time. She now carries an Epipen 24/7 because she almost died with an allergic reaction from all the black fly bites. Finally convinced her to carry one in her pocket while in the house. As I said to her”what if you’re in the house, and one bites you and you go into shock? She lives by herself.

My ex husband was at a golf tournament and a guy got bit by a bee and died right there in minutes. He had forgotten his epi pen in the car. My other friend had some seafood and we were out at a bar they were playing a gig at. Over the course of an hour or two I watched his face blow up and his eyes were almost closed. Had to get him to the er. He never had an allergy before. That’s the scary thing is you can get them any time in your life.

Get a solar powered generator and run a small fan. Those bugs are relentless. I cant sleep at night when its so hot. I went camping one time it was so hot i thought i was going to passvout. I had to get in my car and run the ac to get cooled off. I bought a fan to run at night it was still hot but at least it stirred the air around. Take care be safe.

Hey Brooke! I just love your "special guest"! Maysie is the best. Glad you got that check valve in place and it's keeping it primed. You mention how buggy it is and this year I can definitely relate. I've NEVER been bothered by biting flies or mosquitoes. I always joked and said they don't like my English blood. This year I can't walk outside without getting bit by everything. I get welts wherever they attack me. The mulch looks good that you layed down. Sorry you had so much trouble getting the canoe down to the lake. Knowing you, you'll devise another one. I got faith in you. That heat can kick your butt for sure. We're getting ready for excessive heat starting tomorrow down here. You must have heard me when you started to take a bite of your reuben sandwich. I was like "where's my bite?". Thanks for another great video Brooke. Enjoyed it a lot. As always, take care and be safe. See you next time.

I love your UP Spot of Heaven, so thanks for bringing us along. This was a brutal week with the health, and you were a blessing for me. From a long time Texan- transplanted from Omaha, you truly must slowly acclimate to any kind of heat. If you aren't acclimated to that heat, it can kill you. Yes, it will wipe you out, and sap your strength. Yes, it will destroy your appetite, which is one of our DANGER signs that you are dehydrated and you got too hot. Also, don't forget to replenish your Electrolytes: potassium, magnesium and salt. Gatorade is decent enough, if you don't mind the sugar. Oh, Loose fitting, long sleeves are my go to for bugs AND heat. The fabric will absorb your sweat and cool the air as it evaporates; the key is loose fitting- like a poet blouse. Doug Linker is a Canadian BushCrafter who does a lot of whittling tutorials, with some simple techinques to get you started. Really, he breaks it down into bite sized steps, that give you the greater opportunity for success on any project.

Love your content. Been running saws for over 30 years. Buddies shamed me for 20 year about chaps. Took a pair they lent to me. Cutting and clearing pine conifer in winter. Limb slap and snow load put my saw across the top of my legs. Freak accident but the chaps stopped the chain from cutting both legs. Was out there on my own. Never go out without chaps on. Just my 2 cents. There comebursome and hot during summer but beats the effects of without. $25 dollars we'll spent on chaps.

In the past you have requested for your viewers not to skip ads. The first one was for Ad Blocker (lol). Every few minutes another ad. I watched each one all the way through except the 10+ minute ad and I let it play through but I also checked my emails while it played. On your old Coleman Stove there is an LP gas adapter for it. You also would need a gas hose and a 20 or 40 pound LP tank. It would prevent you from pumping the white gas tank. You mentioned heat, We have been in the mid 90's with a feel like temperature of 105-110. The heat wears you out no matter what. I am going to hate to see my electric bill and I am running the A/C at 80 trying to conserve and using my microwave instead of the stove to keep the heat down. Take care and keep doing the great job you do. Stay health, stay safe and keep living your dreams.

I was itching just watching. I'm originally from the Grand Rapids area and I dread visiting in July when the mosquitos feed like cannibals. Last year, after my trip, I purchased a full mosquito net suit and still have ptsd from the experience. I could just see you wilting from heat exhaustion. Love the Hat deer fly patch! Genius! Outstanding job on installing the check valve and priming that well while mosquito dancing. I can think of a nickname for that big arse green canoe monster but its not suitable for a family channel. Happy 4th and Bastille Day! It's always great to see your videos pop up. Oh, and when we do fireworks, its tradition to yell "Fire in the Hole!"

Ok, please read. I could hear the mosquitos on the mic. The bandana on your wrist,,,wet it totally ,dripping, the wrap around your Neck. Coraded Artery will help you cool down. Even moving around, if it drys out do it again. Or spray the bandana with bug spray, put around your neck or wrist. Next buy a mesh head screen. Add one mesh top like a shirt that breathes. Cotton in your ears to stop the sound of mosquitos. Saw that on Naked n Afraid. I'm envious of your massive strength and love of quiet. More videos please aND thank you for sharing.
