One of the issues with the Ford Focus Transmission isn’t the actual transmission or even the clutches , but the electronic control module (TCM). This module uses a lot of electricity. If you look at the ground cable from the battery it goes to a post (looking at the engine) mounted on the back left of the engine compartment. Remove the cable from the post clean the paint off the post, reconnect, and coat cable and mounting post with dialectic grease.

Great post Tom. I do a lot of my own repairs on my vehicles and I own a 2014 Focus I bought dirt cheap from. 88 yr old man who was told by doctor he could no longer drive. I also work at a Ford dealership as a runner and immediately had the transmission and door latches replaced under warranty. That was two years ago at 36k miles. I’m now at 55k and absolutely love this car with 35.1 mpg. At today’s gas and diesel prices my 2013 F350 superduty 6.7 doesn’t come out of the garage unless I need to haul or trailer something.

My old '07 focus with the 1.6 had terrible gas mileage. The motor is way too underpowered for such a heavy car. My 2015 gets about 80% more mileage, has good power, and is much more fun to drive (though both were fun), and there's no transmission issues because it's properly maintained. I have a 2014 Ford Focus Titanium and it's great! It has a ton of technology, I have two LCDs, leather seats, sport mode transmission mode, sport suspension, dual climate, tap shifting, keyless entry (with start button), remote start, Sony Microsoft Sync infotainment with 8 speakers and a sub, auto headlights and fogs, heated seats, auto up/down windows (all four, I have no idea why all cars don't have this and only do the driver or pass), color-changing "mood" lighting, and it's flex fuel so I can use gas or ethanol. I have 86k miles and it runs great. I had to change the water temp sensor, and top motor mount but both were dead simple to do and the car runs great. I get 28mpg in the city and like 40mpg on the highway.

Also if you have one and are having issues with the dual clutch you can do what they call clutch scrubbing. Find a long stretch of road (with no cops). You're going to put it in drive at a stop and floor it. Let it go through the complete gear cycle (you'll be at like 70mph by then). Then stop and do it two more times. You can also put the transmission into re learning mode. The car learns how you drive and it anticipates your driving habits. So when I bought my car used it ran like crap till I reset the transmission and put it in learning mode (instructions below). Also don't baby this car, it's meant to be run hard from time to time. Transmission Reset: 1. Run car and set trans to neutral. 2. Turn off and wait 15 seconds. 3. Shift to Park. 4. Turn ignition on (Not running), wait 15 seconds 5. Turn to off, then ignition on (not running) 6. Shift to neutral (you may have to press the brake to do so) If successful you should see "Transmission Ready" on your dash.

True i own a 2013 powershift and it had to be fixed and even when working its not a nice transmission however on 2018+ on the mk4 its no longer a powershift its a proper automatic gearbox 8 speed that seems really good now. - Had to have clutch pack changed due to juddering - Even when fixed the car hesitates, power isn't smoothly applied like you press gas pedal and there is a delay then boom the gas comes! - Sometimes the car will try to change up while changing down which can lead to no drive for a few seconds while it sorts itself out. - Petrol 1.6 automatic Focus will be lucky to see 28mpg around town Diesel powershift can maybe get 30+ MPG around town but a 1.6 petrol won't, my car gets around 28mpg when i manually shift up to 5th and 6th all the time but driving normally i'll get around 25mpg then ragging it about 22 mpg around town.

I have a 2015 Focus with the "Power Shift" transmission (commonly called the "Power S__t" transmission). To save expense on the basic world car Ford worked with Getrag to design the transmission and Luc to supply the clutch packs. The clutches run dry and the actuation is by stepper motors. Similar clutches in more luxurious cars run in oil and are hydraulically actuated. Transmissions were made in a new plant in Mexico jointly owned by Ford and Getrag. My dealer first tuned the transmission. The next time I complained they replaced both clutch packs and the transmission input oil seals. Oil seal leaks were common and the seal design was updated. No dry clutch will work well when oil soaked. 50,000 miles later I have had no service problems at all, and no need for transmission tune. My Focus was inexpensive to buy and is inexpensive to run. I like the world styling and handling. Perfect for a retired geek. I have transplanted a 2003 DOHC Focus engine into my 1984 VW Vanagon. It runs great.

Ford said it was my problem now cause it lasted the 36,000 miles. My whole family stopped buysing Fords and now we are happy and loyal Honda buyers. It was absolutely NOT made by Honda!! It was the venerable 1.6L Ford Kent motor used in millions of Fords. The Kent mill was an English Ford motor that used pushrods.... Now Chrysler used a lot of Mitsubishi motors during Iacoca's stint.....while he stood in front of old glory telling everyone else to buy American.

I also own a ‘90 Acura Integra. You may be right. But that engine was a good high revving peppy engine. Very reminiscent of a Honda. You’re saying that none of all of that cozying that Iacocca did with Mr. Honda, amounted to not anything? I highly doubt that… Especially after reading the book and having the cars. But who knows? @@uniquelines Why are you putting words in my post?? The only thing I wrote was the Fiesta didn't have a Honda motor....not only did my family own one, I rebuilt it for my father when on leave while serving in the AF. I was very familiar with the motor and that the basic motor was used in formula ford. The car was OK, got a lot of good reviews back in the day, but I and the local radiator shop will vouch for the near unrepairable tissue paper radiator which basically caused the overheating....don't recall if it had a temp guage, but my father didn't catch it in time before he cooked it. I don't care what deal iacocca made, Ford didn't use Honda motors in the fiesta. Ford's history does include "cozying" up to of course Mazda, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Nissan and Yamaha....probably many others; but I'm not recalling any joint ventures with Honda. Interesting that he was such good friends with Honda ....yet, as mentioned, Chrysler was partners with Mitsubishi.

It starts out like a bucking bronco until it gets into second then it's ok. Tranny makes a horrendous noise going around a corner but it never fails us. It is fun to drive and now has 300000kms on it. The engine seems bullet proof. I suppose it doesn't owe us anything and it would be stupid to give it up at this point. There is also a ground problem from the battery...I own a 2016 (79k miles). The TCU pulls more power than ANYTHING on the cars with the dual clutch trans...the bracket (drivers side fender well) was welded on and painted over. Therefore, the ONLY ground the TCU gets is from the threads on the bolt that secures the negative ground cable...remove the negative ground cable at the bracket then remove the paint...problem solved. As far as reprogramming (required after doing the above) these transmissions are called "adaptive transmissions", which means they "adapt to the driving habits" of the driver. That being said, the transmission doesn't have to "reprogrammed" with a computer. There are videos on YT that show you how to do this. I've owned 3 Ford Focus cars, a 2019 Ford Fiesta with 5 speed stick, and a 2021 Ecosport currently. The first was a 2007 Focus. Great car, traded it in for a 2013 Focus with lots of bell and whistles. I had that car less than a month and the tranny started having major issues. Got it "fixed" at the dealership and two days later, my wife gets rear ended by a dump truck and the car is totaled. Cat Insurance kicks in, the dealership offers us a 2012 Focus hatchback Automatic, used but looking good. After getting that car, 4 times it had to go to dealership with the same tranny problem and then the 5th time it had to be flat bedded to the dealership. During the time we were having problems with the 2012 Focus, I went to a different dealership and looked at a 2017 Focus. I was assured that there would be no tranny issues. I took it for a test drive, made it 10 feet out of the lot and stepped on it and with only 4 miles on the odometer, the car did the same thing my 2012 and 2013 Focus did. Needless to say it was a deal breaker for me. When we gave up on the 2012 Focus and traded it in for a used Toyota Camry, I decided from then on to avoid the 6 speed power shift transmission at all costs. The 2019 Ford Fiesta 5 speed manual was ok but, at 65 mph and in 5th gear, the engine revved to an astounding 3200 rpms and stayed there. As for gas mileage, it would have been better with a 6 speed but Ford apparently didn't think so. I then traded it in for a 2021 ecosport thinking, maybe this will be better for gas mileage. I made sure it had a torque converter transmission, and since Ford decided to get out of the car making business (except for the Mustang) I really didn't have an option. A truck was out of the question. So was a large SUV. So ecosport it was. The ecosport I have has a 3 cylinder engine, 6 speed auto tranny, and a never ending thirst for gas. I drive about 60 miles a week, and my new nickname for my new car is the *MAGICAL MYSTERY GAS GUZZLER*. In the cold weather, the transmission has a mind of it's own. It shifts when it's good and ready and not before hand; it's great if you don't mind riding 2 miles stuck in 3rd gear at 4500 rpms. Which explains why my gas mileage decreases by about 20 percent in the winter time. I don't use sport mode because again, the tranny has a mind all it's own. I didn't like it when the dealership told me that my car keeps a memory of how I drive. That to me seems idiotic and pointless. The bottom line, I will never buy a Ford product again. I wont get one even if they offer it to me for free. Ford used to make a good product but they have changed and their quality is no longer job one. In my future, I see another Toyota sitting in my driveway.

This car with a manual transmission - zero problems. Inexpensive, great handling - especially EU spec. Only irritating thing I found with one is the tyre pressure monitoring system - too sensitive, beeps like mad.

These newer Ford Focus' already had numerous transmission problems, which are the ones with the dual-clutch. Get a manual one, instead.

The TCM in my 2012 Focus SE died in March 2023. When I received the class action lawsuit notification in 2022 I didn't file because the car was fine (except for the shuddering which it did from the time I bought it new in 2011 and which my local dealer attempted to fix 3 times without success but also without charging me). I found that the online process for filing a claim was still active so, while thinking it a long shot I filed and, as expected got nothing. I was so depressed during this whole process. Just before the TCM failed I had purchased new tires and had about $1k work done on the AC. I was trying to get motivated to junk the car. AND THEN I received a letter from Ford saying that I was eligible for a one-time replacement of the TCM. I did some research and found that Ford had notified dealers of an extension of the warranty on the TCM and the one-time replacement...dated AUGUST 2019! So, how many other Focus owners have not been notified of this and have perhaps had to junk their cars? Would I have received the notice if I had not gone through the claims process? Why didn't anyone involved in the claims process let me know about the warranty extension? The car has almost 88k miles. I hope it lasts to at least 150k. But it sure is making strange sounds that it didn't before. Am taking it back to the dealer for inspection.

I own a 2013 Focus SE with 5 speed manual since new. We have just over 160k on it and the only problem so far has been a tie rod prematurely wearing out at approx 70k miles and a slight valve cover gasket leak. Amazingly it still gets 40mpg traveling 65mph on the hwy. Ford made a huge mistake dropping it from their lineup. I'd buy a new one today if they still manufactured them with a manual transmission option. If they offered the new Maverick with this engine I'd consider it, but I'm not at all interested in a hybrid or the turbo model.

I had a 2014 model and the biggest issue was the adaptive learning system. It would learn how you drive but when someone else gets in it drives like crap until it learns how that person drives and it just is a never ending game of back and forth learning and shifting like crap. Sold it to dodge. As a mechanic i wanted nothing to do with the trans.

I drive a 2012 Ford Focus SE. 5 speed manual. No major problems. The Audi high pressure fuel pump has been replaced once. The current fuel pump causes sputtering on less than 91 octane. I have 181,000 my clutch is fine. But I’ve driven standard trans cars since I got my license in 1974… I only need the clutch to back up and take off from a stop. Knowing your power bands is key.

Well said! I wish mine was a manual. I am only 30 years old but know how to drive a manual without using a clutch at all. I had a truck a few years back which was a 5 speed and my friends were amazed that you didn't need a clutch in order to shift. I thank my father for showing me that wonderful trick.

This is what happens when you keep creating cheaper new parts instead of keeping what works well and improve the weak points. If only mercedes and ford continued with their old school cars and improved them we would have eternal cars

I am on my third Ford Focus. Unfortunately my first, a 2014 SE, was totaled. Heated seats, center console, 5 speed MANUAL. Ran great. Bought a used 2018 Focus S, no heated seats or center console. 5 speed MANUAL. Runs great. Last year bought a 2018 Focus S with 28.5K original miles. 5 speed MANUAL. The Focus is a terrific car with a manual transmission. Fun to drive, comfortable, handles well, great gas mileage, big trunk. Just avoid the automatic transmission cars.

2014 Focus, biggest POS I ever bought. Transmission sounded like a 6 pack of cans going through a shredder. Ford wouldn't replace parts and only tried reprograming it. Traded it on a Camry, ate the loss and never looked back. The Class Action Lawsuit offered me $40 lmao, gtfo.

@Scotty Kilmer *The problem is that the North American market got the cheaper version of PowerShift, which uses the DRY clutches that do not hold up well, Europe received the Wet Clutch version which had very little issues and held up well. Ford wanted to save a few dollars on each car sold in the USA and this is why we got the cheaper dry clutch version*
