That's not fixing a "Defect", that's just removing the function of LS. So I wonder why they were doing that to begin with? I'm guessing it still functions, might be noisy and obviously loss of traction, but unless there was something gained seems like a lot of work for little (if any) reward. I suppose at least the oil get's changed (Maybe??? lol). I don't know that I'd say this was an "Experienced Mechanic", more like necessity in a third world country maybe.

Actually it is MUCH worse than that, they turned a limited slip differential into a regular freespinning diff. Those teeth are to supposed to lock the output shafts to the housing as more force is applied to the plates inside, and now they're just going to be spinning a tire instead. Good luck to that operator next time it rains and he actually needs to push on something.

the only thing that doesn't cost anything is cleanliness, which none of these shops take seriously. dump it on the ground, mess around with it on the ground and then throw it back in, weighing a bit more for all the dirt and dust now in gears and bearings. No excuse for that. I know this is mostly on the owner but each worker could do their small part to insure a better rebuild that will last longer without all that dust ending up in the works.

What problem were they having with this diff? As a retired mechanic I was dismayed at what I saw here. Filing the teeth off the LSD friction plate! Why, you now have rendered limited slip useless. Using a cold chisel to hammer a bearing into place! I see one fellow broke off the bolt head on diff housing, but showed not replacing it. And, no gaskets!!! But, you have to give them an A+ for effort. They only can do with what one has on hand! I enjoyed the various responses.
