Back in the day, creep really meant a weirdo, someone who didn’t fit in, but it wasn’t so nefarious or scary like it is now. Great reaction. This is the song of my people lol an anthem of my generation. You could say we were kinda quirky back then, and a lot of us felt like creeps. Today, "creep" = stalker but back then "creep" = loser. Weirdo. Outcast. Awkward. We've held that song close to our hearts for the rest of our lives. It wasn't just a song to us creeps. You really should do the live version. He wouldn't even have to sing, the audience would've done it for him. But my lord, I'm glad he did.

Love the reaction! Radiohead's Creep is just about feeling you are not worthy to be around someone you are attracted to/ love! The thing I always found interesting about this song was that it had almost universal appeal. As a former "outcast" I had no question about how/why I related so much to this song, but I was shocked as hell when I saw jocks and princesses and other "top tier" "special" people belting out this same song as if they got it on a personal level. Weird. I think it just hits most people on a deep level, which is amazing. "I want you to notice...when I'm not around..." I think everyone understands this, even allegedly "special" people. Damn, who is cutting onions?!

I think Thom Yorke of Radiohead wrote 'Creep' about himself being infatuated w/ a girl he admired from afar but couldn't approach due to his awkwardness (he felt like she thought he was a 'creep')... It became a huge single in 1993 from the debut album 'Pablo honey'... (Ironically, Stone Temple Pilots also released a single 'Creep' from their 1992 debut album 'Core') Radiohead became like the British version of Nirvana - 90's grunge rock... but that wasn't what they wanted. Other singles - 'Stop whispering'... 'Anyone can play guitar' ... did not do as well. Radiohead released their 2nd album 'The Bends' in 1995, but it sold less because fans expected 'Creep part 2'... and it didn't have a song like that. Singles were - 'High and dry'... 'Fake plastic trees'... In 1997, Radiohead opted to reinvent their sound w/ beats and electronics... That resulted in their 3rd album 'OK Computer'... and it was a surreal record w/ very odd tracks... but by 1998, fans bought the record as it outsold 'Pablo honey'... and the single 'Karma police' was a huge hit... along w/ the singles - 'Paranoid android'... 'No surprises'... Their 2000 album 'Kid A' went to #1 on the US charts as Radiohead ventured into full-on surreal electronic music.

Social anxiety is a good way to put it. Very common when it comes to trying to approach a beautiful girl. But back then, social anxiety wasn't really a thing people recognized. He is describing how he see/feels about himself. English people are very reserved and "stiff upper lip" emotions are reserved for footie (soccer). Every Radiohead album brings different sounds. Thom(you're right silent h) Yorke is brilliant. Lyricist writes the lyrics and he has written some songs I get all the feels with only a couple lines. You can feel joy,pain grief and anger sometimes all at once. That's a gift. It's hard to do with just words. He an intelligent poet. Dive into some explanations of his songs; he's able to take complex emotions when I hear his songs think "it takes me 20 minutes to explain that situation; he does it in few lines" that ti me is brilliant. Maynard James Keenan's(TOOL,Puscifer, APerfect Circle) abilities are imo on another level; we share similar life experiences so his lyrics and ability to sing(church choir) and scream and I want to cry when I hear emotional pain...Prince does it too. Sinéad sang his song and Chris Cornell "Nothing Compares to You". Sorry I'm rambling. I watch reaction videos especially Maynard's lyrics etc when people have never heard him before.*YOU research, look at lyrics and don't have damn siren noises,special effects and try to hock merch. It's refreshing. Keep it up! Love what you're doing 🤘🏻💯

The word itself was so villified. Weird or odd. This song used to always make me think of an ex. Even though its more about a desire he thinks he cannot ever deserve; so he uses 'Fn Special.' to convince himself its not even worth trying. As far as the Ex; yeah I never felt good enough ; no matter how hard I tried; but in hindsight realized she was putting me down and it waant worth all the work; just to be belittled. Love the song , even w the bad memories.

I've been checking out your Rage reactions, and you got me subbed with this one. In several of your RATM reactions you ask about other bands doing political music/making music that touches on the same kinds of things that Rage did. If you listen to more Radiohead, they got increasingly more political, especially with the OK Computer album (1997) and onwards. They're not as overt as RATM, but they make their statements in more artistic way. Highly recommended, especially if you want to try something that's a little less RAWK.

@elenapatrick8116 Жыл бұрын
The story behind this song is he’s a creep, he’s a weirdo, he has never fit in and people have bullied him and looked at him like he had 2 heads all his life. So the story continues about a girl in college that he had a crush on. She avoided him and when he finally got close to her, (can’t remember if it was a cafeteria or a record shop but somewhere). When she saw him approaching her she literally ran away from him. And this is what he felt because he’s never fit in. I think he dropped out because of it. So he felt like a weirdo that doesn’t fit in or have a place to belong.

He's saying the music isn't girlie, but it's not aggressively masculine either. It's calm, cool and manly,... Smooth He's also saying she was too beautiful and he's too ugly to be with her. She's too perfect (in his sight) for him to even compare himself to her. He's out having dinner with her and feels like he doesn't belong with such an awesome lady. In truth, it's how we all should see our mate. Like nothing can compare to them. She's the 1 for you if being with her makes you long to become a better man. But, you'll feel creepy til you get there/used to it, like you don't belong with her. If she's happy with you, that should be enough to overcome your self-doubt. MMBxMOB

Some lyrics in the second verse can be construed as a jealous, manipulative abuser, taken out of context. I felt a big part of it is that the main character feels so undeserving in a culture that casts out anyone but the most accomplished and archetypal, to the point he thinks having desires and making any effort to sate them must inherently make him a sleazy fraud. Especially at the time, it had been pretty taboo especially for men to have feelings at all. They’re expected to make lots of money, first, then just pick a lady to marry and buy a house for. Culture really dehumanized everyone, just giving them assignments instead of choices. Still these days, it may finally be socially acceptable to feel sad, but don’t you dare feel angry, or shameful, or nervous.
@LaptopLarry330 Жыл бұрын
Radiohead’s success with this song in the US may have been caused by a misinterpretation of the lyrics. I, and other listeners thought that the start of the chorus is “But I’m a creep. I’m a MURDERER.”. A murderer stalking a woman. That is how I, and countless US listeners, interpreted the song when it first was released in the US.
