A couple of weeks ago we were at Springvale Botanical Cemetery about 25 km S. E from Melbourne. We've been there countless times but always come across things we haven't seen before. We came across an area where the first crematorium was back in 1906 and a sign there mentions back then to cremate one body they needed five hundred to 1,000kg of wood .

I live about 2 miles from Whitney Houston's grave and stop in from time to time to see her and my family members in the same cemetery. Around the time of her daughter's coma and subsequent death, there was private security keeping people away from her gravesite. I was a little surprised at the rudeness of this big "bodyguard" man to an older woman there to show respect. Whitney's grave has never been vandalized, so my thoughts are like yours. If you didn't want people there, purchase a private vault away from others. I left peacefully but was very annoyed as there were other graves surrounding her; what about those families? Sorry for my rant!

I absolutely love those old monuments and mausoleums. You don't see anything elaborate like them anymore. Even celebrities or wealthy people who could afford them are buried in much more modest graves. Sometimes even flat ground stones. I guess it's just not the fashion these days. I'm much more enamored of Victorian and elegant styles. I had to chuckle at those stairs going down to the crypt. I picture six guys lugging the coffin down those steep and narrow steps and another guy at the bottom holding the door open. If there was enough room. I guess people were smaller back then. Modern is boring to me. Not that I could afford it. And I agree with you that if they didn't want people in an area, they should have closed it off. Thank you for giving us the tour GV.

I think that the guy yelled at you because you walked across freshly laid sod, but to tell you to turn off your Camera or to turn back, that was decidedly out of line but some people can't be bothered to be polite nor realize how little authority they truly have. Just pay close attention to freshly paid sod, that will get you yelled at by any work crew, but at the same time they should have put up barriers to keep people out, or to keep off the grass.

I didn’t realize that other countries had a temperance movement ( was it like Prohibition in the US?)- poor Mr Dunn probably didn’t have a peaceful home life with a wife who liked to have a wee bit of wine! Question…if there was a Temperance movement in Ireland- did that mean that the Catholic Church couldn’t serve wine for communion? I was raised as a Methodist and they didn’t approve of wine- so we had grape juice And they didn’t allow gambling in the church building…so No Bingo!!

My Uncle has a wee plaque on the wall with his picture too, over 60 years since he passed, public sector, I visit him and speak his name to this day, still trying to find others buried when I was but a child.
