You do realise Satan was never meant to be a character, right? In hebrew "satan" just means adversary / accuser. Throughout the entire old testament, the term Satan is never referin to a character. Even Yahwe is *called* Satan sometimes. For example, 2 Samuel 24 and 1 Chronicles 21 both refer to the same event. One talks about the lord doing it, the other about satan. That's not a mistake. They *both* refer to god. "Satan" is just a word, not a character. Most things commonly *interpreted* to be Satan, ie the snake and whatnot, are just that.. interpretations. The bible doesnt mention that at all. And these interpretations come works published in the 17th century that were pretty influential on christianity. Originally, christianity was never meant to have a good and an evil character. it only had a good character, ie god. During the babylonian captivity the isrealites were heavily influences by Zoroastreanism tho, which, as it so happens, had a separate entity for evil and chaos - Angra Mainyu. Whose name is expressed as "the lie", who is thought to lead legions of demons, and who constantly works to spoil the creations of the allmighty good god. Sounds familiar now, does it? "Satan" isnt a character. It didnt exist in the old testament. It was later added *by humans* .. but quite frankly, the same goes for the entire concept of hell. A lot modern christians believe is simply made up nonsense. I mean, even more made up nonsense.

@@LawofLiberty exactly the opposite. Calvinism says that humans could not choose God of their own accord because we are so broken. It says that everyone, in their depravity, deserves condemnation and that it is only by the grace of God through faith which is a gift so that no one may boast, that anyone has any hope of any sort of redemption. That is why the Bible says that we were dead in our sins. Every single one of the points that Matt makes in this video would be refuted by just about every calvinist that I know and who I listen to and learn from. The main issue here about saying that you're not a calvinist or in Armenian but that you are a biblical is that the implication is that there is a neutral and bias-free interpretation available. @@kaymantie2314 We understand "whosoever" as it pertains to free will. That 'whosoever' is for everyone, but 'whosoever' doesn't negate/contradict predestination doctrine. It is possible God has both chosen who will be saved, and left His Gift to all who recieve it of their own free will. There are different forms of Calvinism, and as a reformed Baptist (1689 Confession of Faith) we do believe free will theology is valid. Regardless we love our neighbors no matter what, and spread The Gospel to all who have the ears to hear, so that they might be saved.

I'm an assured Christian who believe Calvinism is correct. This isn't an accurate representation though. There is a premise in philosophy that says you should be able to articulate your opponents position in a way that they would agree with. The quote Matt is using comes from a letter about Michael Servetus. Servetus was a martyr because he died for having different theological beliefs, and asking questions that were forbidden. Servetus died as a martyr for Christians who were wrongly executed for not conforming to the theological hegemony of the church and state in the place where they lived. It has nothing to do with Servetus vs Calvinism. Read about Michael Servetus and his radical theology and you'll see it. This is just another quote mining from Matt.

Sorry, but as a Calvinist myself, this does not reflect my beliefs whatsoever. I would love to converse about the large topic of Calvinist/Reformed Thought as a whole, but there are a lot of things not being well-presented or treated. I do not believe this is intentional, but the majority of people who subscribe to Calvinism would agree this is being misunderstood. And by the way, "whosoever will" actually means no one will. Natural (all) men sees the things of God as foolishness. So in a sense, no one will. Salvation is created in our midst by the Spirit giving us a new consciousness, and that is what leads us to salvation. If you reach out to any Calvinist you know, I am sure they would be very willing to give a godly defense of their beliefs, and without the name-calling. The thumbnail is misleading. "Christian murdering Christians"...impossible. That would be contradiction. No Christian can commit murder. Born again would make that an impossibility. If Matt is saying that John Calvin was not born again, then he should probably reword the thumbnail to something else. (Christians, being born again, in repentance, can't commit murder) Matt is saying John Calvin wasn't a Christian at all. I discern a personal gripe with Calvinism here, rather than an objective rebuke. If Matt was serious, he would disect the doctrine in a scholarly manner. Instead we get this elementary approach which is a full 180 degrees compared to Matt's atheist rebukes. The doctrine of 'predestination' in no way makes God out to be a tyrant or a monster. It does however prove that God is all knowing, and has planned every detail of His Creation from start to finish. Why wouldn't God choose who He created to be saved, and who would go with their father the devil in a fallen world? Such doctrine does not make Calvinists "special". We know we're sinners, and that God has chosen us out of the world for repentance (John 15:19) and to be born again for Salvation. Historically, Calvinism is a cornerstone doctrine of the Reformation. If you dismiss Calvinism, you might as well dismiss the entire Reformation, and go back to Rome. If you're going to call Calvinism evil, then the Reformation was evil as well. The time period also ought to be taken into account. 16th Century theocracy would make heresy a crime, punishable by death. Is that an indictment on the doctrine? Hardly. Is that an indictment on the man (John Calvin)? Let scripture be the judge. Was John Calvin a murderer? Or was he going by the law as a reformatiomist of that time period? There is nuance to be addressed. Frankly, I don't understand how Matt can make such a weak video on this topic, other than it must be feelings based. But I still love Matt and am very blessed God has brought me to his channel, and I've learned alot from Matt over the years.
